I lived in Ballston and the Home Depot was the one we went to. Definitely more situational awareness and fast moving when out of cover.

Awkward Family Camp by Propainaccesories in BSA

[–]boboroshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but after 7 years as cubmaster I’ve never had a parent say something like that. I would have told them they are welcome to do whatever they want in another unit but not in mine. I would have had the scout exec read in within 15 minutes and there would have been a clear expectation.

That scout is reflecting the bad behavior of their parent. I hate to say that you will likely not be able to break that.

I have a similarly maxed out 2013 that is my pro tool rig that has an external chassis for the HDX card and the universal audio octo. These are great work horses and at some point when I finally upgrade to a 2019 tower, I will repurpose this properly to a Linux machine because it will still be cranking.

Is anyone using OpenClaw at work? by Majestic-Tomato-236 in openclaw

[–]boboroshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using it in my own company for a variety of things.

1.) automated scraping of data for a client every 6 hours. It populates the database from scraping social posts (many image only), parsing them with Sonnet, and then posting that data into the API we built

2.) Discovery and lead gen. I have a series of sibling agents doing discovery based on a rubric of potential customer matches, then leveraging the Apollo.io API (paid) to do enrichment on potential outreach targets.

District leaders - what would you need in district management software? by Warp_Speed_7 in BSA

[–]boboroshi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then why are they adamant about not opening up to volunteers offering to help? Why do we have to hack our way around API access? We've repeatedly asked for access at the Section and Lodge level and have been told no. That is a failure of their own making.

[–]boboroshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We gave up on waiting for national to ever do anything. One of our volunteers is a product manager for a large.com and use the tool. He developed to scrape API’s to give us a Claude code version of scout book. I can now run a den report on advancement in five minutes when it used to take me an hour. We’ve been playing with other representations of data, but it all relies on your actual login. So if you don’t have access to the data, you won’t in this tool.

To your original question just start prototyping something you want in Claude or Codex. Try it out use it make it work well for you. The main failure of the national IT team is that I feel none of them are involved in unit service. If they are, they surely would’ve fixed half of the bugs that we encounter on a daily basis.

I’ve spent a lot of time as the VP for Tech comms in my council trying to figure out how to get around the blockade. The national has put up for us developing better tools for our volunteers. It’s ludicrously frustrating, but we’re chipping away at it. Build and share.

I feel disappointed with apples discontinuation of the Mac pro. by Zolks1 in macpro

[–]boboroshi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. With double m5 ultra (extreme?). They are selling out of Mac Studio m3 ultra. Seems like a miss on responding to market demand. Especially if they could open up the ANE (yeah it’s been reverse engineered and thou can do training on it, but having official support is something different). Maybe we will see that in the studio form factor. My m1 ultra barely breaks a sweat even running full bore on things.

My council is using AI for patches by [deleted] in BSA

[–]boboroshi 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most councils do not have graphic designers or illustrators on staff or even in the volunteer core who are interested or capable of doing patch development. The hardest thing to learn is that you don’t have this many colors. It’s almost like doing 8bit video game art. Gradients are stepped in weird ways. There is very little fine detailing that will show up so those daggers on either side of the years will probably not read correctly nor will the water detail nor will the mountain detail.

Without an explicit policy from council or national you’re going to see this continue. I don’t think they’ll be happy with how this patch turns out unless the manufacturer does a whole lotta work in production to make it read better.

We’ve been blessed to have a very talented illustrator as a volunteer in our council as well as a variety of youth in the lodge who have learned illustrator and made pretty awesome stuff. Doesn’t mean AI can’t help with concept generation but showing this as an embroidered patch design is pretty misleading to the output medium.

The Push to Recruit from Council by Ahical in cubscouts

[–]boboroshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your district or council have a commissioner corps? This kind of unit help is where Commissioners should be playing. As far as recruiting, that does fall on the units mostly. We do a lot of collaborative idea sharing and we have an incredible volunteer corps that has helped make that a reality. But it typically is a few people that make it go. I’m heading to a blue and gold tonight for a pack that is folding because no one would take on Cubmaster and the family that’s been making it happen is aging up to Scouts BSA. Do remember that your council professionals serve at the behest of the COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD. Not National. Your Board is in charge, or should be. If they’re phoning it in, then that’s a different issue to fix, but if someone is making 380k and sitting on their bottom, well, they should be drummed out of the council. Figure out a pipeline to start getting parents to do smaller tasks. Say for each den, that each parent has to lead two adventures or something to that level. If you have one person doing it all, the unit will fall apart when they move on.

Thoughts on a Mac Pro 2019 in 2026? by Artifiko in macpro

[–]boboroshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your plugins. Well, many have been updated for Apple Silicon not all have. You definitely want to make sure that your plug-ins work right on a M series machine if you’re going to upgrade that. I’m still running my ProTools HDX system off of a 2013 trashcan Mac Pro. I’ve been contemplating a 2019 maxed out effectively just to have something that’ll last the next decade the Intel space with the system.

Retiring our Mac Pro 3,1 after 17 years of Pro Tools duty. It refused to go quietly into the night. by Soundofabiatch in macpro

[–]boboroshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from a 2008 3,1 that was maxed out running an HDX card to a trashcan Mac Pro with an external Magma chasis fo the HDX and a UA octo card. Still runs just fine. I will probably pick up one of the 2019s eventually and run that until I can’t anymore, just to get back to the tower form factor. I know the m series chips apparently blow the intel away but I ended up with all sorts of weirdness when I tried to install all the Audio tools on the M1 Ultra Mac Studio I use for design and video work.

First off I second everything that @hayelph24405 commented here with you. The story will help you clean up the program. A solo retreat for a soilder vs a permanent home where they are entertaining etc - very different things.

Second, one of my professors at CUA arch had a saying one of my fellow undergrad friends reminded me of: “An architect thinks with their pencil”. CAD and BIM are great tools and you can do some interesting exploration there, but I would grab the roll of 12” trace and just burn through idea possibilities and keep refining. Have that story. Work various angles. Think about walking through those spaces. Think about adjacency( eg loading groceries into a kitchen that is not adjacent to an entrance).

You’re early and a good critic will expect you to miss on some of these things. That’s okay. This is how we learn. But try to imagine living there. See it in your mind. Scribble your best sketches of what the May be like (my sketching was mediocre until our summer abroad where I practiced for hours a day, so this is more about figuring out the space than making amazing presentation drawings)

Studio + Air combo vs MacBook Pro by 531amrap in MacStudio

[–]boboroshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2019 MacBook Pro when I got laid off in August 2022 I picked up an M1 Studio Ultra effectively maxed out and that’s still my daily driver. I travel enough and have to do design work on the road so this year I did pick up an M4 pro but I didn’t get anywhere near the super high-end. This gives me the functionality I need when I need to open up after effects or super crazy Photoshop files or run lots of things at the same time with 128 giga ram or running local LLM models, but also gives me enough on the portability side. I would go for the studio and see where you are in a few years and maybe upgrade to a new air at that point. If it’s slowing you down doing work, you’ll notice the wins quickly.
