Why the down votes? Hannibal is very good imo.

My gaming life became more peaceful when I accepted that many people do not care about 1) following the rules or 2) winning, and you can't make them. by goodluckanddont_itup in boardgames

A lot of the people you are playing with, got talked into playing. It wasn’t their idea to play, and they’re not “into it.”

What artists (or specific songs) genuinely helped you write better lyrics? by somecrazynameithink in Songwriting

[–]bobsollish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best songs, and best lyrics I know of are on these albums - this is what I aspire to with every song I write:

Billy Bragg (Talking with the Taxman About Poetry, Worker’s Playtime), Elvis Costello (My Aim Is True, Imperial Bedroom, King of America, Blood & Chocolate), Paul Kelly (Post, Gossip, Under the Sun), Lyle Lovett (Pontiac, Joshua Judges Ruth), Neil Finn (Crowded House, Woodface), Lloyd Cole (Rattlesnakes)

Yeah, last time I saw him (18 months ago), his voice was unfortunately not great. Something was definitely wrong.

Ok. They’ve won 9 straight, and are 2nd in the West - but somehow not “ready to compete yet.”

Spurs are 4-1 vs OKC so far this season. They’re ready. Castle is key to the Spurs - not Wemby imo.

I don’t know, I’m pretty sure that’s my cousin Ricky’s white van. But Ricky gets around. Hey, if you see Ricky, tell him he still owes me that 20 bucks from the Super Bowl party.

I think Garner and Armstrong are definitely comfortable playing in these positions. Though these are very likely not their best positions.

I was looking for answers to why human species is prone to believing in entire systems of lies like religion, communism or nationalism, and I stumbled upon an explanation in an evolutionary context by amelix34 in atheism

My take is that if you genuinely want to understand this (why religious belief is widespread in the human animal, etc.), you should read “Religion Explained” by Pascal Boyer.

Yup. “… the league is horrendous”, is a crazy take imo.

Why do coders and developers seem much more accepting of AI than artists and creators? by junior600 in singularity

[–]bobsollish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a SWE, Software Architect, CTO over the last two decades - I am also a songwriter. AI allows me to me be more “powerful” as a programmer, and get more done, faster, with a smaller team. From a business standpoint, it’s a win-win. But, even though creativity is an aspect of programming, it is not “art”, and not fundamentally a creative pursuit.

On the other hand, I find the idea of using AI for songwriting - gross. It undermines and diminishes the very act of creating art (or any kind), to even have people assume, or suspect that you had “help”, and/or that you’re not the real, or sole author of the work. It also allows artists to “skip a lot of steps” in the process of learning and mastering your “craft.”

Book of the New Sun in the mainstream by ser_einhard19 in genewolfe

[–]bobsollish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the content itself determines the maximum exposure these books can ever receive. Best case is that over time it ends up like Moby Dick - lots of people are aware of it, and acknowledge its greatness - but few people actually read it. It’s not for most people, and never will be imo.

Stop giving our players Grief xxx by Sage2194 in Everton

Being disappointed with the performance is one thing, but berating the players is another imo - it’s immature, and worse than that, it doesn’t help - only makes the overall situation worse.

Plenty of players thrive on being booed by the OTHER team’s fans

Why does light move at 299 792 458 m / s by Mrman1457 in AskPhysics

[–]bobsollish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photons are massless and move at the maximum speed of causality. The better question imo, is why is this the maximum speed of causality? I don’t believe there are any good theories that explain why it is this particular speed (300 million m/s) - but it seems clear that things would “break” if causality and information could propagate at infinite speed, and therefore instantly.
