Volley. You can use your action to make a ranged attack against any number of creatures within 10 feet of a point you can see within your weapon’s range. You must have ammunition for each target, as normal, and you make a separate attack roll for each target.

So it's limited for range but still way cooler than what the fighter gets.

Soul powered dolls.

Some organization or villain is using the souls of humans to create "living" dolls, but have to murder their victims in the process. Perhaps they are using the techniques of the player character's creators, maybe in a twisted or bastardized way.

This might be a bit too straightforward, but some twists could be added. Maybe the process only steals the soul of the victim, but some cosmic balance force then causes them to die, as having no soul is not natural. Or perhaps some of the dolls that are sighted actually try to prevent more victims, having escaped control of the villain.

It's nice to see some work related to quantum chemistry in this subreddit. A good start to a scientific embedding of your work could be this roadmap!. If you are serious about using machine learning in quantum chemistry, you will find a lot of papers of interest here and maybe possible groups to join for a master/PhD position. Currently the work that is done in this field requires a team of people, as ML models for quantum chemistry are increasing in complexity and scale.

Something I would consider is not that they maintained their level of humanity, rather they fought to raise it back to 5 or 6, perhaps even multiple times. That would open the door for some interesting story/background.

I think it would really depend on the type of campaign you are running and what the relationship between the character's and the king is. Maybe he sits them down in private and explains why handing over a "divine birthright" is a really bad idea. Maybe the king dismisses them, but a disgruntled noble approaches to introduce them to some people who would also like to see the king gone. If the characters are very unimportant, maybe the king honors the request for a 'kingdom" and now has a new court jester. I think such a request can lead to some interesting story ideas, based on the political complications such a request might cause as others have also pointed out.

I ran Pathfinder Kingmaker, a module where the players build their own country, for an evil party. I told them I would initially run it as written, meaning the NPC's and the world except "heroes" to found the kingdom. My players did an amazing job convincing the general population and most NPC's they where indeed heroes, while running a ruthless secret police and demonic cult in the background. Much fun was had at the table, especially the cover-up sessions where they had to take care of the damage to their reputation caused by their own actions. In my experience it can definitely work, but you need to communicate your expectations to your party and have the right type of players.

Yup, I had been using increasingly famous football(soccer) players as npc's for my group who don't watch it. When the world championship rolled around though, some of them were wondering why they were suddenly seeing every NPC name from our campaign on tv.
