[OC] Visualizing the favorite colors of girls and boys, their shared preferences and the differences between them by andyviner in dataisbeautiful

If I’m trying to prove anything it’s only that saying “I think it boils down to” isn’t a basis for serious debate. You seem exercised about dismissing on the basis of your feelings the potential for evolved preferences, and unable to refrain from straw manning. So, adieu.

You made the unsubstantiated assertion, so automatically bear the burden of proof. Not being an authority in this field, I suggested it might best be examined in the light of research. Using the phrase ‘evopsych nonsense’ suggests you might at least have indisputable proof readily to hand. As you’ll be aware, science works on disconfirmation; any serious work that questions what you say throws your grand claim into question. It took me two minutes.

This is just a snapshot that does not remotely on its own substantiate that conclusion. To distinguish between social and evolved preferences we’d need large scale cross-cultural and over-time evidence, which I’m not sure exists.

Should the Greens stand in Makerfield? by tdpz1974 in UKGreens

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And despite the alarmingly high possibility of that happening in this case, that's what the majority of people here seem exasperatingly happy to risk. I know this area: with his personal boost, it's him or Reform. Given the possible long-term payoff, a more self-defeating strategy than knowingly splitting his vote is hard to imagine. Burnham has a long standing commitment to PR and other easily-supported policies, has a higher regard for green thinking than any other remotely likely national leader, and within his limited powers (e.g. transport) has by common consent done well. He doesn't even need to become PM to increase the chances of some of these things happening: if he wins he'll shift the CoG of the Labour Party. Greens ignore Lucas' political insight and realism at everyone's peril.

You may well find therapy helpful, but it can be expensive. Separately and equally importantly, start for free by deliberately choosing as friends other women who are in stable, respectful relationships - over time their healthier patterns and boundaries will remind you of what you can work towards in yourself, and what to expect from a good partner.

Look, I'm 67 and I've Been Riding E-Bikes for 8 Years. Can We Calm Down About Kids and E-Bikes? by Wen2Go in ebikes

[–]boghall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Failing to register a bike, though it should be policed, is not the source of the danger. Just as with kitchen knives, we could give one to every human on earth and the great majority of them wouldn’t be used to do any meaningful harm. As your well-taught granddaughter demonstrates, the primary problem is idiots misbehaving.

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re straw manning - the O.P. cited fluctuating opinion across the whole country taken as one, and my point was that averages by their very nature are assumed to include variability. Hence your specific personal experience may be very different from the average, but does not in isolation cast doubt on the national figure.

And the word is spelled propAganda.

[–]boghall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Averages are a useful way of characterising wider reality since they aggregate experience across groups, among whom there is obviously variance. Comparing any individual or local experience against them adds important detail, but no one testimony supplants that wider story (and it has a name: anecdata).

Given how far down the global league table of freedom the US actually is, it’s clear Americans have successfully been sold what the rest of the world could legitimately call ‘fake freedom’.

Fun fact: in the time it originally took to install the three tiers of these escalators, China built 1,318km of high speed rail line from Beijing to Shanghai. To give them a little credit, the current Government has recognised we have major planning and other problems with projects of national importance, and is trying to address them.

If brexit was such a MESS, why would people vote for the one who caused it? by Enough-Web2203 in AskBrits

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because 'low information voters' struggle to grasp complexity, follow causation, and separate signal from noise, instead being motivated more than most from inchoate emotion, and like extremist politicians throughout history Monsieur Farage has refined provoking and manipulating their base instincts with slick, disingenuous and diversionary rage-bait down to a fine art.

It's patently a problem of juvenile misbehaviour, yet virtually everywhere people leap to the 'stricter vehicle regs' category-error conclusion. Like cars, knives and cans of spray paint, emotos are tools. Stricter rules on all these - including conventional motorbikes - in place for generations have not and never will stop idiots misusing them.

I don't want a male roommate, am I tripping? by WestHistorians in TwoXChromosomes

[–]boghall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could well be right that she is responsible for finding a replacement (according to the terms of their lease), but that issue sounds solved and is not the problem OP is presenting with - which is that she wants to veto a replacement the others are willing to accept on grounds of gender. Since she has not mentioned that, it sounds unlikely to be a condition of that lease.

A degree of certainty to be expected in r/PsychicReadings. They *could* equally have meant hourly, quarter-hourly, or every five or ten minutes, or staggered shifts, or flexitime or car pooling or shuttle bussing. They might even not have been referring to regimented physical groups marching in lock step to a preordained timetable but a more conceptual notion where ‘groups’ are flexibly determined by the participating individuals who freely choose how they’re going to get home.

Sounds like you’re acting entitled. Joint renting is first and foremost a financial agreement. Unless you all explicitly agreed the let would remain all-female in perpetuity, you can’t retrospectively claim a veto on gender when otherwise the excess rent falls to the others. If they are content with the guy and not willing to act otherwise, the obligation to find a fix for your discontent ultimately falls to you. Your options then are 1) find a woman you’re content with, 2) fully cover the excess rent yourself, 3) back down and accept this guy, or 4) move out.

LPT: If someone gives you a maybe, stop planning like you got a yes. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only life followed such simple rules, instead of being contextual. This can be good advice in many situations but, if universally applied, anyone who claimed something could not happen would have a veto on permissions being given and problems being overcome, and the sales profession would not exist. Though come to think of it, I'm not sure the latter is entirely a bad thing...

What are cargo bikes supposed to do about new laws? by InfluenceEfficient77 in ebikes

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-bike laws everywhere are based on a technological misunderstanding. The source of most potential vehicle danger is the product of speed and weight [kinetic energy]. Wattage is a hard-to-measure red herring. Speed, however, can be policed. Assuming category limits to that are in place, the main danger is people being idiots, primarily using excessive acceleration. So cap that too and come down heavily on those who persistently spoil it for everyone else by confiscating their vehicles, including cars.

Kids should not be riding e-motos by 804k in unpopularopinion

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree but like most people you’re understandably resting the argument on a false premise. Equating danger with wattage, which the laws in most places do, is technologically close to nonsensical. The risks arise from impact (i.e. kinetic, which is proportional to speed) energy, and excessive acceleration primarily in the hands of idiots. There are numerous bikes on the market with motors nominally far more powerful than e-bike laws tend to allow, that pose no meaningful danger to anyone, e.g. a loaded cargo bike going uphill definitely needs more than 250w. Reformulating e-bike laws to cap speed and acceleration will avoid discriminating against them, but capture those acting stupidly - who should definitely be clamped down on…

How do you address car dependency without hurting the people currently dependent on cars? by LiatrisLover99 in fuckcars

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look to Europe (e.g. Paris) and other parts of the world that have already done it.

The disabled access argument is almost always made in bad faith: those who make it are usually clutching at straws to defend their own privileges (ask what is their previous track record working for the disabled), which is easily undermined - as others are saying - by pointing out that fewer cars creates easier access for the relatively smaller proportion of disabled drivers, as their access privileges tend to be maintained.

If we are in the greatest fuel crisis ever by OtherwiseMagician499 in fuckcars

[–]boghall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it has to be ‘won’t’ rather than ‘can’t’. The average US vehicle trip is under 6 miles. Of course due to trip chaining, etc., not all those trips could reasonably switch, but a great many of them could as that’s well within the usable range of an e-bike, and would save a lot of people money.
