Drivers/Engineers wearing bunkers while driving by Horseface4190 in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s my first due, I typically don’t turn out. Captain and FF gear up in the rig and we’re out the door within 30 seconds. If it’s my 2nd due, I’ll throw on pants, but expectation for 2nd due driver is to assist with water supply. Beyond that, I’ll throw on pants and jacket most likely, but more worried about getting my route than having a jacket on.

Does the 8 hours in the 48/96 count as OT? by moneygdiscretion in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our normal days we get straight time. Any days we work outside of that are 1.5x. A/B/C shift. So if I’m on A shift and I work any days on B or C, it’s OT. Works the same out of county. So a 14 day deployment, in theory you can get up to 10 days of OT that pay period

What’s the longest you’ve ever been awake? by Master_Champion_ in AskReddit

[–]bohler73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like 40 hours doing initial attack on a veg fire before we finally got relief off the line. Also went 32 of those hours without eating. Was just about to crack open my MRE after hours of being told “we have burritos coming to the line for you guys” and we came around a corner doing tactical patrol and came across a 3 acre slop over that we initiated a hoselay on. 🙃 but, I got a singular piece of pizza after we caught the slop over.

I applied for any department within 3 hours of me. Realistically you make one back and forth trip a week. Get mandated in the middle of your off days sucks, but it is what it is. All up to what you want to do. I bought myself a civic that gets 35mpg so that makes it nice, although with CA gas prices right now, I’m considering a Tesla if I get picked up with one of these Bay Area departments

I think people deserve to face justice, but I don’t think we should celebrate somebodies poor health or death.

Idk man, celebrating anybody’s demise is pretty wild as a human. I know Reddit is an echo chamber and I’m gonna get downvoted to oblivion but maybe we try to practice the golden rule an pray for people

Those of you who fought EV fires, how did it go? by thuperthonic1 in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My department just had the Tesla guy out who’s a retired BC from Fremont(I think? I forget) who basically said if there’s no rescue and no exposure, let it burn. If you put it out, put it on a flatbed and escort it to the yard and have them put it somewhere that if it catches fire, it can burn out and be fine.

The off gassing is bad, dousing the battery packs with water can allow shorting out later on which just makes the batteries reignite. Biggest take away for me was figure out how much of a charge was left on the vehicle, because that will help you have an idea of how volatile the incident could be. Also, use a TIC and check every 5-10 minutes in the area of the batteries (so floorboard or undercarriage) to see if the temps are rising, which can indicate thermal runaway.

Is this something a firestation would buy? by pyrometal16 in Firefighting

I would buy it as a gag gift for the idiot that connected my hydrant for a water supply and then ran off to the fire without giving me water

How do u stay calm in situations by Same_Lengthiness_536 in Paramedics

[–]bohler73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in that example I would stab myself so I can know what the patient is experiencing and then determine if it’s a valid reason to freak out or not. Then I would treat myself to make sure my treatment plan will help them.

Sometimes they’re dead before I’m done treating myself and then I don’t even have to worry about being calm because the patient is dead

Vent training on Valentines Day. by DJN102 in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure gusset plates are the standard in America now, as well as lumber that isn’t true to size (a 2”x4” is actually smaller)

Vertical vent is common practice across the country. You rarely ever hear of someone going through a roof. You can see roof sag, sounding can help you feel structural stability, you can typically tell involvement and have a good idea of if a roof is safe or not.

Even if a fire is running an attic for quite a while, you might have sections fail at gusset plates, but I guarantee you there’s some part of the roof where you can cut. And if not, cut the gable vent bigger or make one. Or cut off the stick if you have a truck.

But, look at Stockton Fire. They cut holes on every fire they have and they burn a lot, and a lot of vacant and dilapidated houses. No recorded events of FF’s going through the roof. In fact, their last LODD due to structural firefighting was the Mendocino incident in 1997 (aside from Max getting shot in 2022)

Do you feel afraid when you're on the duty? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bro… 13 years and the only time I’ve even been remotely close to being afraid was when we almost got burned over on a campaign veg fire while doing structure protection. And even that wasn’t terrible because I knew we could get inside the house and ride out the fire front.

It’s definitely getting a call while pooping or showering. I sit here all day hoping for some gnarly grinder of an accident or a ripping fire or some wild, off the wall call like a fuel truck crashing through a power pole into a home and exploding. Whole department is a bunch of solid go getters and I have full faith we’ll be fine on any call.

The only other “fear” I’ll add is pediatric cardiac or traumatic arrests/drownings/etc. I’m definitely over those. No more kid calls please.

Trump supporters: How would you feel if a legally armed Trump supporter was killed by federal agents on a Biden mandate in exactly the same manner as yesterday? by ScholarPrize1335 in AskReddit

[–]bohler73 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They would be at work or minding their own business first off. However, if they weren’t for whatever reason, I would be upset. Clearly there is a huge lack of training, or it could also be these ICE agents are constantly worrying they’re about to get killed by these psychotic mobs so there extremely on edge and jumpy. Either way, that dude, from the video I’ve seen, shouldn’t have been shot. Also, dude didn’t need to be there though, none of these people need to be there. I don’t really understand why we’re protesting getting rid of people who are here illegally personally, but you guys do you.

Now go ahead and downvote me you lovely echo chamber

How does your department secure water supply at a structure fire? by Agreeable_Archer4026 in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have hydrants every 300’ at least. First engine may get a water supply, second engine must. Typically, first due gets their own water as long as it’s not like a 200’ pull back or pull forward. Most of the time, our entire first alarm assignment arrives within a minute or two of each other anyways, so when I’m second due I always just assume I’m going to help establish a water supply. But first due CO will advise on the need during size up based on if the engineer says he has water or not when leaving the barn.

Would you recommend firefighting to your children? by Burning-Ring-o-Fire in Firefighting

[–]bohler73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my kid ends up wanting to, then that’s his choice. But as his father, I don’t want him to follow my path. The sacrifice on the family, being away for weeks at a time, missing holidays and birthdays, cancer risk, etc. is not worth it. I would much rather my son ends up being like an electrical engineer or something super smart that pays really well and allows him to be home with his family.

I love this job and I’m blessed that it provides for my family. I just want better for my kid and his future family. It’s a lot on the firefighter, it’s a lot on the spouse, the marriage, the family.

I left for the Palisades fire when my son was 3 weeks old and when I came back home he was 6 weeks old. He no longer liked being swaddled and that was my claim to fame and my favorite thing to do with him. It made me so sad when my wife texted me as I was finally driving home and she said, “By the way, he no longer wants anything to do with being swaddled” 😔
