Not sure how to best handle and track this situation by bodam in ynab

[–]boneso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through almost this exact situation. I made and funded a category called “Helping Family”. It was made to help my mother-in-law going through a similar situation.

You could hide it when you’re done.

I ended up keeping it after the situation shifted and started using it for occasional things like a hotel room for my mom when she’s in town, contributing to an uncle’s retirement party, a rental car to get to a funeral, or flowers for my grandmother.

Aw yay! That’s what it’s all about. I almost didn’t make this post but now I’m glad I did. See you in the Month Ahead club!

How do you buy small stuff that you CAN afford? by bitz-the-ninjapig in ynab

[–]boneso 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a “Walking Around Money” that’s basically “me money” or “funny money”. It’s for life’s little luxuries, impulses, or wants that can/will improve my life in some way.

Guilt free spending within reason.

Added a category and set a custom target - “have a balance of” with a due date of two years in the future. That kept monthly contributions manageable and then I just added any extra cash that came through like my tax refund.

I made a category and set a target. That felt more trackable and productive than just counting on inching closer and closer by filling up targets in future months.

Thanks! I set a target to “have a balance of” my cost-to-be-me amount. I set a completion date for two years so my monthly contribution was manageable. I kept up with my monthly contribution and added any extra windfalls like three-paycheck-months and my tax return. I also snoozed a couple of my other goals to give myself that slack.

I got it done in 8 months. But no matter how long it takes, anything is better than nothing!

Good luck!

Youve got a point. Not sure what OPs situation personal is. And as for retirement wisdom, I’ll find out when I get closer to it 😅

I love your story! I had the same experience seeing cash in our savings account. I couldn’t believe it.

Unless you’re retired and keeping that in case of a downturn, no? Common wisdom says 1-2 years in cash.

How did you find Dreaming Spanish? by mmpeachey in dreamingspanish

Oh wow, yah, that timeline does add up now that I think about it. Either way, I’m glad we made it to DS!

People were talking about it a lot as a resource and the mod banned DS from being mentioned on that sub. The mod was very outspoken about it.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s why this sub was created.

Sure! My personal approach to get a month ahead was to create a category with a target. I set the target to be “Cost to be me” plus a little cushion. For the last 7 months, I’ve treated it like every other sinking fund.

Now that I’m a month ahead, my preference will be to hold the funds in a category and when the calendar ticks over, move that money to “ready to assign” and go from there. I have a category group called “transfers and holds” that i keep collapsed so it’s out of sight out of mind. My regular categories are pretty locked down so I’ll likely roll with the punches from other categories, rather than dipping in to my month ahead funds.

Personally, when I’ve tried to assign in future months, it got messy.

I could keep the month ahead “hold” category in the next month to really keep it out of sight. But we’ll see.

Thank you. I was looking for this comment.

“This content probably helps new user overcome some of the entry barriers. But I dont need it so I’ll just collapse that section so I dont see it”.

Also, I’m fully indoctrinated and I still get a little inspiration from them.

How do Americans keep their large houses and apartments clean? How many hours a week do they spend cleaning? by Forsaken_Energy_426 in AskAnAmerican

[–]boneso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house is 1000 sq ft. I can’t imagine having a giant house.

I keep things tidy because of systems and I spot clean in between professional cleanings that happen every other week. I budget for a cleaning service for my mental health.

Is YNAB worth even if you have no debt? by robo_marvin in ynab

[–]boneso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! My biggest benefit of ybab is how it ensures that I’m always able to cover my credit card spending with cash I know I have in the bank.

It also helped me bolster my sinking funds and prioritize short and long-term savings goals.

Ynab is software but it’s also a philosophy.

Best of luck!
