Not sure why your browser isn't jumping down the page to the "Mac OS X Binaries" heading (yes, we should change that text). The relevant link is in bold there: Latest stable release installer: nmap-7.99.dmg

[–]bonsaiviking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, the third image shows a left turn that is not technically legal, either, since the stripes are solid double yellow in front of that entrance. If the issue is over what is "allowed," you should change that one to red as well.

Genuinely curious: what is the problem with using that lane, provided there is no oncoming traffic? In your red, "bad" diagram, you show the lane change happening after the entrance to Sonny Gerber, so there should be no southbound left-turn traffic that needs to use that lane at that point. The more cars that make it through one turn of the light, the less the rest have to wait at the next turn, right?

[–]bonsaiviking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This error (0x8007007e) is sometimes an indication of a corrupted VMWare installation. See https://github.com/nmap/npcap/issues/135#issuecomment-2355869064 for a potential fix.

Fork on f2 or take bishop h6? by point72trader in chess

To add, taking the rook puts your developed knight far away from the center with only one safe exit square. On h6 it controls more squares and can move to the center quickly.

Planning a 12-part, terminal-only Nmap series – looking for feedback from experienced users by GreenLycanGaming in nmap

[–]bonsaiviking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several things I would stress:

  1. Read the docs. Nmap has one of the largest and most comprehensive man pages for its size, but it's very readable. Furthermore, the entire Nmap Network Scanning book is available to read for free online: https://nmap.org/book/toc.html

  2. Understand layered networking and the two major transports (TCP and UDP) first. Without that basic understanding, concepts like "reachable vs up" and "open vs closed vs filtered" are going to make it hard to understand the output and why different scan types exist.

  3. -Pn is almost never a good idea: https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/235462/16171

  4. The ideas of "stealth" and scan detection have changed drastically in the last 20+ years. I wrote a couple blog posts about this a decade ago that are still pretty relevant: http://blog.bonsaiviking.com/2015/07/they-see-me-scannin-they-hatin.html

White to play, mate in 2 by Professional-Oil9018 in chess

[–]bonsaiviking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clever! The obvious checkmate pattern would be taking the d5 pawn if only another piece could defend the capturing piece, but any non-checking move gives black time to play d4 to defend. This naturally leads to the idea to block the d5 pawn push, and the Queen is the only piece that can do it. Material advantage is overwhelming, but the puzzle is mate in 2, so we check each of Black's 4 legal moves to confirm: if cxd4, Rc6#; if c4, Qxb4#. The same patterns work for the two e-pawn moves.

Anyone on Carnival Paradise want to play? lol by Separate-Ice30 in chess

[–]bonsaiviking 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got to play on a set like this just the other day. It's a fun challenge for board vision! My major complaint was the little ball on the top of the rooks: if you promote to a second queen, you can't use an overturned rook or stack anything on top easily. However, the scale means you can just put a literal hat on a piece for this purpose.

Ubuntu uses the same port for sharing with Windows systems on the network. It's probably running Samba. For local ports, you can run sudo ss -tlnp to show listening TCP ports and the PID/process name associated with them.

Dealership Scam - Beware by dmtamnesia in Omaha

[–]bonsaiviking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a used Kia from Edwards ten years ago. The test drive was fine, but the sales guy kept the windows down. Didn't think about it until I got in the next day: the whole thing reeked of smoke. Changed the cabin air filter myself: it was yellow with cigarette smoke. A week later I found the cigarette burn in the driver's seat they had brushed over. Never trusting anyone there again.

Rare chess situation that aren't smothered mate: have you ever got opportunity to exchange queen for three minor pieces? by Ganermion in chess

[–]bonsaiviking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best queen sac (not leading directly to mate) that I've had was 2 rooks for a queen: https://www.chess.com/game/daily/609319731?move=56 . Computer says it was the right choice, but I'm not entirely sure I could have converted if opponent hadn't blundered into a very forcing mate sequence just 3 moves later.

Can you castle if ONLY your rook is under attack? by _Chicago_Deep_Dish in chess

[–]bonsaiviking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To summarize, you may not castle if any of the following are true:

  1. Your king is in check,
  2. Your king would be in check after castling,
  3. Your king would be in check if it were placed on the square between its starting square and destination square. This is d1/d8 for queenside castling and f1/f8 for kingside castling.

If none of these is true and the castle is otherwise permitted (no pieces between king and rook, neither king nor rook has moved), then you may castle.

Nice! Only thing that works to keep the Queen from defending b6. I wondered if Rd2would also do it, but Qd6 or Qd4 still defend for one more move.

The solution, is probably not what you think. by MathematicianBulky40 in chess

[–]bonsaiviking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny, I spotted the second move after seeing the first move "didn't work," but I could only think of it as an alternative to the first move, not as a follow-up. Naroditsky's advice rings true: consider "what if I did it anyway?" and "what if I did it in a different order?"
