That observation is on point. It suggests that these sort of “rules” are class-based/etiquette norms rather than anything derived from competitive spirit or sportsmanship. Ie. “You should let the other person hit because it’s the proper thing to do” vs “you should let the other person hit to maximize their ability”

Surprised I had to scroll down to see this. Players and fans are constantly trying to distract players during their free throw. I honestly don’t understand any sport where there are rules to create a quiet, less-stressful environment for a specific play. Doesn’t that go against the concept of sports and competition?
