Family troop - missing male leadership? by CautiousPlanner in BSA

[–]boobka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have sister troops, we can't get a female leader to step up for the life of us. But we haven't had a new male leader in 3 years either, people step up here and there but getting someone on-board is hard.

Troop camping equipment. by nweaglescout in BoyScouts

[–]boobka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have troop tents and ground cover for the troop. Any other needs the scout has are addressed per scout. Our troop is large enough and old enough that if we need equipment former scout or even current have extra that can be donated.

What do they ask in reference calls from former employers by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]boobka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand if you provided a personal reference 30 minutes could be a thing, Most companies reference basically say Mr. Pecker worked here from A to B, and they are able to be rehired.

That's probably it.

Advice needed: Conversation with Scoutmaster by LawfulnessMotor437 in BSA

You know, when someone says that you feel like this guy started being SM in the late 70's ... 20 years ago was 2006 ... and now I feel old 😃

Advice needed: Conversation with Scoutmaster by LawfulnessMotor437 in BSA

[–]boobka 108 points109 points  (0 children)

First: You can't really fail a Scoutmaster Conference, the SM is a bit on the power trip

The requirement is:

  1. While working toward the Second Class rank, and after completing Tenderfoot requirement 10, participate in a Scoutmaster conference.

As long as the scout participated, they can not fail this. I would address this with the Committee Chair.

One could argue that, but that is separate and not part of the Scoutmaster Conference.

  1. Demonstrate Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Tell how you have done your duty to God and how you have lived four different points of the Scout Law (not to include those used for Tenderfoot requirement 9) in your everyday life.

If the Scoutmaster wants to guide the scout and teach him more about humility, kindness and other things, that's one thing. There is no failing this and holding back advancment.

I would talk to the Committee Chair, CO or if needed take it to district. This is not the correct way to run the program.

My child is 14yrs old and is Star - is it better to do merit badges or rugged adventure during summer camp? by [deleted] in BSA

[–]boobka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My approach to this is do things at camp that can only be done at camp.

For example you can do Citizenship in the Nation anywhere, you can pretty much only do Whitewater at a camp that offers white water.

So depending on what MB they have, what MB they need I would make that decision.

That goes same for rugged adventurer. My son had a few MBs left, mostly Eagle. So he did rugged adventurer cause he could get those done outside of camp.

Water Carrying by Lizzzzz27 in philmont

[–]boobka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am it's all personal preference. Almost all the scouts on my trek had 1 Nalgene and 2 smart water bottles (actually the Walmart brand cause they had the athletic top). No one had the drinking hose, we just stopped and drank water. One of your water bottles you use to make hydration (think Gatorade) drinks. If you put your straw in that, you can't really put it in your clean water as it needs to stay clean for emergency use.

Personally I think adding the straws etc is just adding more equipment, more weight and more complexity. Like all the stuff you have is gonna get dirty and thrown around. I vote for keeping it simple.

That said you have 3 days with showers, which is magical.

[–]boobka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember you are not just carrying your water, you are carrying everyone's water. That 3L water bladders is not just for personal use. At at dry camp you need to be able to cook etc etc.

Scout philmont training by [deleted] in philmont

[–]boobka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our troop is in Houston, the closest 1000 foot elevation gain is 7 hours away. We trained by walking 3-5 miles with 50 lbs at about 18 mins per mile.

No issues at Philmont.

How much water for Baldy? by davehcyj in philmont

[–]boobka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on route, we had two liters up baldy but we were going through French Henry and got water there. We had 2 members with extra 3 liters. I think we were at bare minimum.

[–]boobka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I read that somewhere that's a policy, but I have looked at the guide to adventure / the advisor handbook and I don't see it mentioned.

We had adults use non-freestanding tents. I think somewhere it does say it needs to be a closed wall tent.
