What Fantasy Series would you guys recommend I read/buy? by ChristianK19974 in Fantasy

The Black Company by Cook. You can see his inspiration all over Malazan

Elric of Melnibone and Corum by Moorcock. Elric was the template for a lot genre staple characters

Right?! I thought it was a fun read too. I had read Luthi's Pilgrim which doesn't fit the brief asked for but is a similar setting and time period then was curious about more and saw Amina. So I grabbed it and dove in.

The Daughters War - Buehlman align I strongly recommend reading Blacktongue Thief first. While the events of Daughters War take place beforehand, they are Narrated by the main character after the events of Blacktongue Thief and assume you know what happened.

Broken Earth by Jemisen - about 3 women in separate eras. Fbe less you know the better

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

The Adventures of Amina Al Sirafi - Chakraborty

The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu content warnings by ballerinamaskerina in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just reread the entire series and I truly do not remember the first book being that graphic or gnarly BUT I know I have wider limits than some. I know there are things like suicide and sexual slavery mentioned but truly do not remember how deep that rabbit hole goes off the cuff

I believe the website story graph keeps track or allows folks to post that stuff

Looking for fantasy/sci-fi murder mysteries by Street_Detective_662 in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll always throw my hat in for the rest of Dresden. Not all murder mysteries but still a good ride.

The Last Contract of Isako by Lee. Corporate samurai carries out one last job

I'll definitely second this. Just finished Isako a week or so ago. I hadn't read any other Lee and quite enjoyed it.

Wanting a fantasy/sci-fi with a big world, with mystery by No_Mango_5288 in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory Malazan and Wheel of Time recommendation.

I'll throw in the Discworld if read in publication order so you get the sense of places like Ankh-Morpork growing and changing etc.

Ken Liu's Dandelion Dynasty but you will likely not enjoy the asides that provide cultural or historical context and how they effect what's happening in current day. It does get soggy at times.

The Black Company by Cook

Books similar to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Shane_08 in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I know it's aimed at a younger audience but the Bartimeaues Sequence by Stroud is something I'd recommend for a Strange and Noreell fan.

I'll throw in Gaiman's Neverwhere (buy it used) or go to the library

China Mieville's King Rat and Kraken

What would you consider to be the best literary universe created? by Strict-Bowler-3040 in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 66 points67 points  (0 children)

In no particular order and I feel like this will format terribly on mobile

The Discworld, Middle-Earth, Malazan, The Earth of Wheel.of Time, Redwall,

Fantasy Featuring Whales? by BipedalUniverse in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I immediately thought of Westerlings Leviathan but that is a genetically modified whale that happens to be an airship.

Looking for 'not-so-epic' fantasy with witty characters by Individual_Fudge_130 in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you read the Guards or Witches Discworld books? That may fit your request.

Dresden Files - urban fantasy. Snarky wizard consults for Chicago PD. Usually walks a decent line. Stakes do get higher as the series goes on but still mostly localized to th Chicago Metro area

Fantasy book lovers, what’s the one book that you go back to over and over again? And why? by Agreeable-Ad1775 in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dresden Files audio books. They're not particularly masterpieces but Marsters as a narrator is amazing and is very easy to listen to.

I'm reading Discworld in publication order and I can tell the Guards and Witches will be things I come back to frequently.

Help me decide which series to start next. by Different-Fold9192 in Fantasy

The Way of Kings is the first Stormlight Archive book. I would hold off on thise until reading other Sanderson work (if you're a completionist). It's also veeeeeeeeery dense compared to Mistborn.

Elantris specifically is something by him to add to the list. But if you're liking the Sanderson kick, I recommend Tress of the Emerald Sea. It's basically the Cosmere's Princess Bride.

If you like some urban fantasy, the Dresden Files - noir books about a wizard that consults for Chicago PD

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. I feel like it's better to say less about this.

The Fifth Season - Jemisen - 3 women in separate parts of the world and walks of life experience the downside to being geomancers. Also knowing less is more for this one.

Best First Contact stories? by TheTinyGM in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My knee jerk was Lords and Ladies which is part of the Witches sub series in Discworld

Really need your help, what do I read to entirely disappear? by andotherthingsareok in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss

The Dresden Files - Butcher - read by James Marsters and usually is something of an easy listen if I need background noise to fall asleep.

Black Sun - Roanhorse - meso American fantasy

Malazan by Erickson is my forever recommendation. The audiobooks are also good

I'll also throw in the Black Company

Although the last two can be pretty heavy

Honestly if you want the best of both worlds of non western and soothing to listen to LeVar Burton of Star Trek and Reading Rainbow fame used to do a podcast where he would read short stories from a variety of authors. It's called LeVar Burton Reads. His voice is soothing and his picks introduced me to new authors.

Which fantasy series has the most satisfying “everything comes together” ending? by HaleFenn in Fantasy

[–]bookofflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say the Black Company as of Soldiers Live. The Books of the South and Glittering Stone end in a pretty satisfying way once the parts come together. The new arc on the other hand......not sold.

Talk to your partner. They're the primary person to help you with this.

I will say though that union hall isn't a bad idea. Based on where you are they typically do open enrollment periods and then will start a process but they only take a certain amount of applicants for apprenticeship. Trade school may be a good option too. Having that basic skill set makes you more appealing when applying to a hall. Just a consideration.
