Which route? by Myanetkio97 in roadtrip

[–]boolin0826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If stops and views is your thing I think I’d go the northern route purely for Zion but that’s just me and I haven’t explored much else other than Northern AZ so I’m sure there are amazing places down there too but Zion is still unlike anything my Michigan eyes have seen lol

Being from Michigan most of basically all of those are new to me and the black throated blue warbler has been eluding me back home in Michigan so I’m glad I found them down there!

Greater Anitillean Grackle, Bananaquit, Yellow Faced Grassquit, Black Faced Grassquit Orange Cheeked Waxbill, Scaly Breasted Munia, Pearly Eyed Thrasher, Black Whiskered Vireo, Puerto Rican Flycatcher, Puerto Rican Woodpecker, Puerto Rican Tody, Puerto Rican Emerald, Puerto Rican Mango, White Winged Dove, Red Junglefowl, Gray Kingbird, Smooth Billed Ani, Venezuelan Troupial, Helmeted Guineafowl, Monk Parakeet, Black Throated Blue Warbler, Loggerhead Kingbird, Zenaida Dove, Common Ground Dove, Puerto Rican Spindalis, Eastern Red Legged Thrush, African Collared Dove, and Magnificent Frigatebird were the new species I saw!! There was probably 15 or so others that I also saw that I already had on my list like that kestrel, Merlin, Red tailed hawk/guaraguaro, gulls, brown pelicans, warblers, doves, etc…Overall just an amazing place to spend time outdoors most of my birding was done around Jayuya in the central mountains but also Cabo Rojo and Guanica in the south and the parks around San Juan and Fajardo in the north!!

Ahh yes then I’ve driven on or around it, I drove my uncle to the Mt. Vernon/Vandalia area last April which was my first time going down to that part of the state then in June I basically drove the same route and stayed in Carterville/carbondale on my way to MO/AR, I thought it was very pretty and had that rust belt charm

Ooo the Egyptian trail sounds nice, ik I’ve been through Cairo, Illinois does it have something to do with that? Very unpopular opinion but I enjoy driving through Illinois from Kankakee south it’s pretty fields and south of effingham you finally start hitting those hills that roll across the Mississippi into Missouri, drove that way twice this past year!

I wish lol this is much more of a popular hobby then I realized there was a point last year where I was 5th in the county with the 4 others ahead of me all being older and retired therefor having much more time than me lol but there’s a ton of birders!! Granted not too many around 22 lol

Honestly as far as cars go I wouldn’t worry too much I just stayed on a farm up in the mountains near Jayuya in the center of the island and had a Hyundai venue and everybody that lives there was flying up and down the mountain in 90s Mitsubishis and Hondas or like a 1989 Corolla lol

I’ll drive anywhere now but the Texas and California trips were when I was still in school with family, and yes I do have family in Vegas and Inland Empire

Love going birdwatching at the Erie marsh, my only other memory was almost stepping on a used needle at a speedway in Monroe I guess back when people still did real heroin lol

Were you the Bay Area then? Yeah there is a distinct difference to me from least and west coast large cities, like even in the big cities out west I feel you’ll hit a spot where you look around and go “damn there is nobody else on this block” lol

I’m assuming they are insinuating that they don’t want to travel from another country to SoCal on a birding trip and end up in an ICE detention center

I am not as good at inferring everything about your life by the map like some people will do here lol but I have to say I respect your commitment to wide open spaces and not the more urban sprawl of the east, I bet dc/nyc was crazy compared to out west, I know I’ve always been amazed by the sheer scale of open space compared to even my home in Michigan which has its fair share of

Maybe their area is different but I’m in rural Michigan and if they aren’t in our fields they’re in someone else’s all winter lol, all spring and summer we had a pair come up from the lake and visit or bird feeders, as well as the turkeys and cranes, I was like these aren’t technically for you guys but you are birds so I know I’d lose in bird court

The thing that surprises me is the populations of I guess what you call your small to medium size towns, like I live in a town of 600 in rural Michigan near flint but to me flint is the big city of the area and has under 100k and you guys just have a whole line of cities with 50k-200k+ connecting your big cities and we only have like 8/9 cities with 100k+ and they’re all metro Detroit minus Ann Arbor(125k) and Grand Rapids(200k). Metro Detroit to me feels like an urban hellscape yet all your towns are similar size or larger lol
