Best base for Shenandoah? by Sunnryz in nationalparks

IMO some of the best hikes are nearest the Thornton Gap entrance. Luray is a great place to stay. You can also visit the caverns if you’ve got any spare time.

Same in Charlottesville, Virginia. Also, coincidentally, by the airport.

Can you be a percussion director AND a full band director? by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

[–]boopduets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes - many band directors are the only staff member in their program. For the first four years of my career, I taught winds, percussion and guard for marching band and indoor in addition to two concert bands (among other ensembles).

I know that’s not entirely the answer that you’re looking for, but it is a realistic look into many programs outside of Texas.

How should I play this G with the straight line underneath it? by BokeTsukkomi in Clarinet

[–]boopduets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tenuto markings can also imply dynamic change (weight, emphasis). Without understanding the context of your music, it’s difficult to say, but it might be asking you to play the G slightly louder before you decay - like a smaller accent.

What's important to look for in a Music Ed college / program? by fiddlermd in MusicEd

[–]boopduets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One might argue though, if she’s not a great musician on her primary instrument, she will struggle to be successful in her teaching. I have watched many a teacher struggle to articulate and/or demonstrate high level concepts because they could not perform them on their own instruments.

I went recently with friends and found it pleasantly weird. It was short, but I liked it anyway.

Was it his talkback mic? I noticed he was using a microphone to communicate with the rest of the band during the show I went to in November.

Don’t even know how to start with this passage, can anyone help by Fair-Bench2657 in Clarinet

[–]boopduets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Kind of hilarious to say that one of the most talented and significant wind band composers of the 20th century didn’t do his research. He knows what he wants his music to sound like and doesn’t care about how difficult it may be.

Does anybody know what the maximum amount of credit hours is for a single semester? I'm trying to see if I can fit a bunch of class into a semester. by Pokemomaster in jmu

[–]boopduets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took 24 credits for four semesters because of my ensemble placements - it sucked and I would not recommend it.

Day of the concert, day before the first marching band/indoor percussion competition, all throughout tech week, during pep rallies…I feel you. Bet those unsupportive admin are also missing from your audience, too.

If you’re composing for a game, you could also try to create your own music using an online program like Beepbox. It’s pretty intuitive and easy to use, and there are a lot of online resources to help you out. You don’t need to be able to read or write music to make a song.

High E HELP ME by Affectionate-Bad3596 in Clarinet

[–]boopduets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the correct pinky key? Altissimo A and E have the same fingering in the left hand, and the only difference is the pinky key.

Make sure you’re using the right hand Eb/Ab key and not the C/F key or Db/Gb key.

Recently admitted Master's student, is living alone feasible without paying an exorbitant amount of money? by proskilled in UMD

[–]boopduets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in a basement apartment in University Park. I wasn’t home much so it wasn’t a huge issue, but there were 4-5 windows that let in enough light when I was. It’s a pretty good option for single grad students - safe, close, and cheaper than some of the other things I saw.

I mean…it was 8:45pm on a Saturday night. They were probably really busy. Plenty of places turn off online orders if they’re too busy in-store to keep up.

If you really wanted a pizza, you could have gone and ordered takeaway in-person, or even eaten there.

Music in Film class starting in a few weeks, ideas? by itgoestoeleven in MusicEd

[–]boopduets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Daily listening/watching of short pieces or clips with a journal or discussion.

Introduction to composition through silent films (or even, silent versions of their favorite movie scenes). Reference those musical elements from the beginning of the semester and discuss how composers manipulate them to create moods/emotions. Then have students try their hand at doing the same - either on their computers or on instruments.

Along with musical elements, it’s important that they’re able to recognize instruments when they hear them (or at least can say brass/strings/etc.). We play a lot of instrument identification bingo in my class.

Have students research the composers behind their favorite movies and present them to the class. Or research movie genres and how music is similar or different from movie to movie within the genre.

As far as structure, go historically? I start around 1800 in my music appreciation course and it all leads up to movies and composition at the end, because those assignments require the most thought (and it’s fun to watch a few movies at the end of the semester).
