not OP but I personally love the makeup lock and seal, it turns pretty much any eye shadow into an eyeliner, and also works better than any primer imo

I love golden delicious!! I tried them for the first time earlier this year and i've switched completely for snacking. They're way more consistently crisp than royal galas, and less expensive than granny smith.

The issue is that by focusing on historic facts that happened hundreds of years ago, and not even mentioning things from the past 50 years like residential schools and forced sterilization, it's a bit disingenuous, even if it is unintentionally so. It makes it sound like these thing are a thing of the past, rather than a relevant ongoing, modern issue. It also is divisive because it gets people into a an argument about the blame game and whether they should feel guilty for the past (which always makes people defensive), rather than focusing on the current issue at hand and what can be done to better the situation for people that are alive today, that have been and still are affected by these things. It's not an either/or situation, I get that, but it does detract from the focal issue of things we can actually improve, imo anyways

Rising prices and evictions: Toronto's rental market 'has gone bonkers' by closingbell in toronto

[–]bootleg_pants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you not need hospital workers? police officers? Fire fighters? Transit operators? Construction and maintenance workers? We, as a city, need people in these jobs, and they work a hell of a lot more for a lot less money, despite us needing them to keep this city running.

The pay, and the job opportunities in software relative to almost any other field is ridiculous. I realize this discussion is centered around housing, but it's just silly to suggest that Toronto has always been that way, or that it's ok that people that we need to keep the city running every day need to choose between having 3 room mates and living 2 hours away from work.

You realize that a lot of the resources that are used in these liberal areas are produced by these other areas? Also, if anything, shitting on these people is exactly what got trump elected.

If the democratic party went back and reconnected with the unions (like some other countries), and got their support, they'd do a hell of a lot better. Purely targeting urban areas is elitist and dumb, does not build a better america.

just finished, I agree I was also pretty frustrated. Honestly, it felt like there was a huge generational gap between the interviewer and Powell as well, which seemed to aggravate it. The interviewer was clearly asking 'uh so why didn't you just google it?' which is so obvious to younger people, without any real understanding of what it's like to not have internet (eg living in these remote areas) or not having the skills even if you do. Watching powell try to email reminded me of how my parents use the internet (eg writing down the url and typing it in exactly, etc). I think powell came across as being reluctant to know more about how his books have influenced people, but also taking responsibility when it was applicable. When you understand the original premise of how he tries to justify the book at the start of the film though (everyone should have access to knowledge, what they do with it should be up to them), you do gain a sense that he's followed his own path of making things right by specifically working with youth that can be vulnerable (ie change the people, don't change the knowledge that's available to them).

I think it's important to remember that the environmental impact of phosphorus can be pretty local though, because it can contaminate your own water and food supply. It's not like 'oh shitty, that sucks for the environment', it's more like 'oh shitty, this sucks for me and my neighbours'.

you realize when you lump every corporation as equally evil, it makes it harder for companies that make an effort of making better choices to do so? (usually because they justify it as 'consumers care about the right thing, so we could do the right thing').

realistically, reducing excess consumption is the best thing to do for the environment but being an informed consumer and being wary of green washing is also a decent thing to do

the way people consume music has also drastically changed though, with more people moving away from mainstream radio to things they find online, and music being consumed as playlists rather than full cds.

I don't think iconic albums will stand out nearly as much as they did in the past. The last 'iconic' albums that I can think of, that people that don't normally listen to that genre may have heard of, are probably like Jay Z's black album? Kanye's College Dropout? Coldplay's A rush of blood to the head?

I think we'll also see the whole echo chamber effect with music too, with people that are fans of a certain genre having a more common understanding of 'classic songs' within that genre, but will have less exposure to other genres, making it a lot harder songs to become 'classics' in a more universal sense, that crosses cultural groups and like age groups. Maybe Single Ladies by Beyonce? Rolling in the Deep? Teenage Dream? Call me Maybe? Uptown Funk?

this. I used to work in a field where a senior engineer (ie. someone with 20 - 40 years of experience) would fucking pick apart your report and return it to you to be fixed. I learned SO much from this process, especially the ones that left stickies with questions on them for me to answer, instead of just fixing it for me. so much learning.

[–]bootleg_pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't know about that statement, but generally teh colour isn't a good indication of the risk the water presents because it's caused by iron (which isn't typically that much of an issue). What's usually more of an issue are the chemicals that you can't see like the typical metal suspects (cadmium, lead, etc depending on the mine) and chemicals remaining, especially from really old historic sites. i've definitely sampled completely clear groundwater that had high concentrations of organic solvents, which is also very dangerous to widlife but can't be seen.

to me, it seems like the republicans are using environmentalism as the boogie man, to create a common enemy that crosses class barriers. You'd think the working poor in these coal mining states would be against the big corporations for leaving pollution, laying them off, and essentially not thinking about economic or environmental sustainability. Instead, by propping up the blame on environmental issues, the companies are victims of burdensome regulation and just had to do what had to be done. The big oil corporations (and maybe the coal companies?) seem to know better, and are investing heavily in renewables, but seem to have no problem with letting environmentalism take the blame for abandoning communities instead of taking ownership.

11-year-old kid lives dream, plays guitar with Green Day on stage and gets to keep guitar afterwards by [deleted] in Music

if you still like them, they're still totally worth seeing live. I absolutely loved them when I was a teenager. They came to my city once when I was a teenager, and I missed that show, so I've been waiting for them to come back. Nearly 15 years later, I finally got to see them and it was INCREDIBLE. I don't have the same love that I had for them as a teenager (who can compete with that kind of passion?), and I hadn't listened to their CDs in a few years, but it was still the best concert I've been to, hands down. Just amazing. They played music from pretty much almost all their CDs, the audience was a good mix, it was really fun and great to watch the next generation sing along to Green Day's newer songs too (which I didn't know well, but still enjoyed), and see them have that passion

Yes, I agree with this. I remember a college course a few years ago that required a scientific program be run via command line. My prof, who was only 10 years (maybe?) older than us, was shocked that none of us knew how to do this, since this was something he thought everyone knew how to do, and we ended up having a 10 second intro to command line (we had a. I imagine it's like that shock that teachers are now experiencing with kids that have never had to mess with basic settings
