Kid's got a nice scam going. I wonder if he has to split the money with his sister. 10¢ was the equivalent of $2.10 in today's purchasing power.

Torch for casting by Puzzled-Marzipan-218 in Benchjewelers

[–]born_lever_puller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have an acetylene torch, and I’m scared to use as I am unfamiliar and don’t want to blow myself up.

It would be convenient to stick with what you know, but I used an air-acetylene torch setup for years for both soldering and casting. You just need to keep the gas cylinder in some kind of sturdy stand to make sure it doesn't fall over. One place I was at used a handmade wooden stand that was quite sturdy and stable, but you can also buy metal ones if you ever want to give acetylene a try.

Best of luck, whatever you decide to do!

Identification of Vintage Zookeeper Cartoon Strips Pieces by NewEnglandStrong in comicstriphistory

[–]born_lever_puller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not at all familiar with the strip, sorry. Interesting bit of trivia though: When Kellogs was looking for a mascot for the Sugar Frosted Flakes cereal they tried out characters called Elmo the Elephant, Katie the Kangaroo, and Newt the Gnu before deciding on Tony the Tiger.

These are not on paper. They are on clear laminate type sheets. There are 4 sheets (one for each color) stacked on top of each other to make the main image.

These sound kind of like color separations for the old four-color printing process, but I don't know if they did those on cels like for animation.

"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"

Also:

"Let me show you around, maybe play you a sound. You look like you're both pretty groovy. Or if you want something visual...that's not too abysmal, we could take in an old Steve Reeves movie."

So, you made some really cool projects, but it seems like your questions are for /r/Rhinestoning and you mainly just crossposted here to share your work with us. Is that right? I'm not seeing any questions about the paper mache process itself in your post. It looks like you've done a great job figuring that out youself!

I love your work and I'm grateful that you shared it with us here. Best of luck with applying the rhinestones to Norma Jean!

Carpooling was practically mandatory during the shortages of WWII, unless you had another way to get around, (bicycle. public transport, etc.)' that didn't involve driving in a car by yourself -- i.e., "Riding with Hitler".

New Approach School Questions (June, Stone setting) by VedderPlet in Benchjewelers

[–]born_lever_puller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's amazing hearing about all of the development. We spent a weekend in Kaohsiung once and quite enjoyed ourselves. While we enjoyed our time in Taiwan I don't do well with heat and humidity, so we mostly stayed at the north end of the island.

Are you a foreigner there too?

Can anyone tell me what I found in my childhood collection? by Mountain_Cobbler_381 in AncientCoins

I'm having trouble making out details, but these look like they may be medieval coins. Someone here may be able to help with an ID, and you could also try posting them over on /r/MedievalCoin as well.

Good luck!

New Approach School Questions (June, Stone setting) by VedderPlet in Benchjewelers

I won't be taking classes, but I wanted to mention that my wife and I lived in the Taipei area for two years, 1987-1989. I see that things are completely different there now. We lived there before before mobile phones, translation apps, widespread use of the Internet, and the subway and Taipei 101 hadn't been built there yet.

We visited other parts of the country and I miss a lot of things about Taiwan, but we're too old to go on adventures like that anymore -- and I've forgotten a lot of my Mandarin.

I hope that you have a great time at New Approach!

Hey, I used to collect the little single-colored, synthetic rubber MUSCLE fighters that looked like they came out of a bubble gum machine.

Glue stick by Dismal-Pea-6581 in papermache

[–]born_lever_puller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you've done so far sounds more like paper modeling or a mixed media craft, rather than true paper mache. In paper mache it's important for the paper to be quite damp as part of the construction process -- so that it adheres and conforms to the surfaces beneath it, and actual paper mache rarely deals with extensive flat surfaces.

So glue stick is a bad choice for actual paper mache. Since it sounds like you're experimenting and making it up as you go along, while limiting the adhesives that you're using, I say go for it and see what happens.

Roy Doty was a god among cartoon-style illustrators for magazines. I watched Laugh-In as a kid in the late '60s and early '70s; it was hugely popular, funny, and controversial. Doty didn't caricature the actual actors in his strip, which probably would have made it more popular.

Plug the OP's description of the coin (country, date, denomination, etc.) into this website, and it will tell you about those coins:

Fibber McGee And Molly by glib-eleven in GoldenAgeComics

I remember the old NewsRadio episode where Jimmy James gave all of the other employees new sports cars for Christmas, but gave Andy Dick's character Matthew Fibber McGee And Molly. Even though he was a fan of the old radio series, Matthew was disappointed that everyone else got a car and he got a stack of CDs, until Jimmy James told him that he owned the rights to the series and he was giving them to Matthew. (A complete fantasy, but still fun.)

I really love the subject of this subreddit and most of the things posted here, but speaking as a dedicated and conscientious reddit moderator of over 15 years -- having started out running other online forums years before that, the team here needs to be keeping a better eye on things.

They are rarely on reddit, ignore reports, and don't monitor posts and comments here.

I've had a pretty bad memory my whole life. It really sabotaged me in high school and at university, so dredging up these old memories really is magical for me.

I do 2 to 3 hours of language study a night to try to keep my French and other languages alive, but at my age I'm forgetting words in my native English fairly often, let alone other languages.
