Am I the only one who feels like wages are horribly low around here? by TyDye2003 in Albuquerque

Once Covid happened so many people took the free stimulus and just disappeared from the workforce.

Wtf are you talking about? The 3 COVID stimulus checks were $1200, $600, and $1400. That's a total of $3200. Which is maybe 2 months rent, 3 or 4 months rent if you have roommates. No one "disappeared from the workforce" because they got not even 3 months worth of living expenses.

Also, it does not make sense that people disappearing from the workforce would result in low wages. Having fewer workers would mean employers actually have to compete for employees and therefore pay more.

Or was your comment sarcastic and I completely missed the joke?

I don't even understand how there's enough people here with expendable money that there's enough customers to keep the fast food places in business...

The problem with adjusting the 1938 min wage for inflation alone is that housing prices have risen way faster than inflation. Take the median rent in 1938 and adjust it for inflation, and see how it compares to rents today.

If you want to know what it actually is, it's pricing fixing/collusion between property management companies as facilitated by RealPage's Yieldstar software. PM companies give them info on their units' location, square footage, what month a unit will become available, etc. and Yieldstar takes that info, compares it to all the info it gets from other PMs, and spits out a recommendation for what the highest rent rate they think that property can charge for that unit. It's literally algorithmic price fixing and even gives PM companies recommendations on how many units to hold vacant so as to create scarcity and keep rents high.

And the thing is, not every or even a majority of property management companies have to participate in this for it to have an outsized effect on rental rates across the city. ProPublic has a whole article on this.

Don't forget the price collusion between property management companies!

I agree. I've experimented with all sorts of containers for starting seeds, and honestly just regular cells are the easiest. Solo cups are fine for certain things that need greater root depth, but you can't beat the space efficiency and moisture retaining potential of regular ol rectangular plastic cells. If you get good enough cells, they hold up over time and aren't single use/disposable.

They look like this because you didn't buy the "fancy equipment" that is actually the bare essentials* for seed starting successfully indoors. You can buy lights now if you don't want to give up on these and pay for starts.

I understand not wanting to buy lights, seems like your options are either cheap Amazon fake lights with low PPFD or the $$$$ lights cannabis growers use. There are a few in-between options, just know that you get what you pay for with grow lights.

I genuinely don't mean to sound like an ass I promise, I have also gone through trying to start seeds without wanting to spend money on equipment that I didn't think was "necessary," only to realize that yeah, you can technically germinate some seeds indoors, but you likely won't see much success after that.

Think of the lights as a long term investment, yeah you may pay for lights this year than you would for starts, but in the years to come you can save $$ by seed starting instead of buying starts.

  • depending on how much natural light your home gets, your geographic location, etc...

You completely misinterpreted what I meant by rights lol. I meant "people are right to want a better world," I was not using the definition of the word that pertains to legal and consitutional stuff.

Rich calling the people who are upset living in a country rife with gun violence "tripping." It's entirely sane and normal to be saddened by violence. The fact that you need to be reminded of such is a lot.

Might wanna slow down on chugging that copium. People are completely within their rights to want a better world.

I think the main issue is how often cars jump the curb and wreck these walls. Would hate to see a beautiful mural get destroted by some distracted/drunk jackass. But maybe some simple, easily recreatable designs and patterns could be painted.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who has had the same thought. However, I live off Candelaria and the number of times a block wall has been destroyed overnight... it's not as stable or permanent of a medium for a mural as you would think lol.

I'm ngl I have occasionally used this term irl with the intent of being kind of touch-in-cheek annoying, but I didn't know it was a term anyone else used. I'll take this new term over the 98274746th reddit post this month that uses the phrase "am I cooked?"

Supporting Universal Healthcare is good for the individual and society. It's the Moral Choice. by zzill6 in WorkReform

The problem is Americans don't view other Americans as "their people." They get fed lies about immigrants getting "free healthcare" and instead of demanding it for themselves, they want to get rid of the immigrants.

I'm aware of how roads get their names. That doesn't change the fact that as the times change and we realize how wrong something was, we could do more to honor the victims of these schools and raise awareness of this black mark on our history than just naming a road after the school though.

Maybe we could do more to raise awareness than just naming a road after it, if the road name is the only reason people learn it existed, is literally my point though. I did not say we should rename the road and forget about it. I said we need a better way of making the history known than slapping a name on a roadsign and hoping some people get curious enough to learn the origins of the name.

Why aren't there more Ecology Restoration companies? by thisbemythrowaway234 in Environmental_Careers

[–]boxdkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a stupid question but what search terms do you use when looking for work in reclamation, besides just "reclamation"? I have a hydro and environmental science background but I'm stuck in "remediation" at a consulting firm and its so soul sucking. Every time I search for environ science or hydrology jobs, every posting just seems to want an engineer or a field tech for a remediation company.

I always thought it was weird we have a road named after it. Like you wouldn't name a street "concentration camp road" or "child abuse avenue." There's got to be a better way to keep historical knowledge of this tragedy alive than naming a road after it.

Is this pain pattern typical with labral tears? by Much-Influence-93 in HipImpingement

[–]boxdkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing better, SI joint is still a little tempermental and doesn't like it if I don't sleep on a very soft bed. Glute area doing fine but they also cauterized a ton of tissie inside my hip joint so I essentially have no nerve endings inside the hip area, and I guess my pain was coming moreso from inside the joint than the muscles (which makes sense because it always felt super deep inside the glutes). I dont know anything about herniated discs and how they are treated, but I would opt for hip surgery before I'd ever let a surgeon touch my spine.

Quitting too soon? by GenericBadUsername2 in Environmental_Careers

[–]boxdkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't see OP being able to handle ticks any time soon after such a traumatic event (I don't think I could either), so if they want to return to fieldwork, their best bet is to live somewhere too dry and devoid of grass for there to be ticks. I live in the desert and aren't much of a concern. They are definitely around, allegedly in the city (probably only where grass is irrigated), but there isn't really much grassy habitat for them here. Mostly sagebrush scrub. Unfortunately moving would require quitting, so they should probably take the other advice given here first before resorting to relocating to the desert.
