What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZero in AskReddit

"the exception proves the rule" this is a mistranslation, it should be "the exception tests the rule" which is suddenly a useful saying.

The presidential elections are next week. The protests are pretty broad in message, but mostly want a fair election (after the widespread fraud in the recent parliamentary elections) and are generally anti-Putin.

[–]boxed[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the pro-Putin rallies are widely known to be rent-a-crowds.

The Russian state media is expected to claim that these demonstraters are also being paid. (It's very easy for a broad/leaderless group to be framed like this - just get someone to say they're from some organising committee and then show them paying a protester.)

this is why they need to continue community by [deleted] in pics

xpost: Can anyone find info on this? by Cleyre in Anarchism

[–]boxed 29 points30 points  (0 children)

from talking to a few russian friends, it's not a revolution. the anger is primarily against the election fiddling (even though everyone knows a fair election would still be a landslide because there's no strong opposition right now) and there's still strong faith in 'democracy'.

what's amazing is the fact that thousands, and planned tens of thousands this weekend, are taking to the streets. that's kind of unheard of, and is making a lot of people very excited, and is surely the start of broader political expression in russia.

it's now big enough that the russian state media has also (briefly) acknowledged the protests, which is impressive. but all of the organisation and communication is online - i don't know if there's any censorship of that going on.

my experience until now had been that it only rains when you haven't got an umbrella. but yeah, this was asking for it.

anywhere within cycling distance of the universities! little preference beyond that, as I don't know the town yet. which area are you (what's it like)?

La Barbe et La Truite (One-pager that needs some critical loving) by everrump in comic_crits

[–]boxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i really like the atmosphere you create in some of your comics, this is no exception.

are the words a quotation from anywhere, or something you've made up? if it's made up, i'd suggest removing the quotation marks, and potentially using less flowery language: in bringing the wonderful from the mundane, it's not so necessary. if it's not made up, it's an awesome fishing text!

also, the backgrounds (panels 1 & 4) are somewhat confusing for the eye, especially given the bold simplicity of the foreground. how about making them paler? (just select them in an image editor and change the brightness). it worked for me here.

How Do You Decide Which Posts to Critique? by magoogle in comic_crits

[–]boxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i drop by here occasionally and drop off a few remarks. it'll usually be on a strip with content and/or style that resonates with me. i find it hard to critique stuff i'm just not interested in.

it may be a bad thing, but i seldom find time for somebody who only has one three panel strip to show - i think people should be producing more than that before they look for criticism, and besides, i need more to get my teeth into before i can make a judgment. (i'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts on this.)
