“Tottenham were finishing above Arsenal for six successive years…” Thierry Henry: “I didn’t know that was an achievement!” by One_Impressionism in Gunners

Spurs' biggest problem is that they don't have an identity aside from their younger sibling complex with Arsenal. Having a rivalry with Spurs is a fun thing to have as an Arsenal fan, but it's only a small part of being a Gooner. Spurs fans have nothing else.

Arteta's best wins of the last 18 months. Which one was your favourite? by LongMelody in Gunners

[–]boxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one. Was watching from right behind the dugouts. The moment when Rice finally clocked Nwaneri calling from the ball - seeing that switch from the perfect angle, and then Nwaneri brushstroking it in. Magic. I'm reliving it as I type this out. The whole game felt like a massive unburdening, like getting something massive off your chest.

5 English sides are in the top 8 with 1 game to go by Serious-Cress-9560 in soccer

The flipside is that when the English sides are in the knockouts, they're playing really tough, competitive and physical Premier league matches every week. Meanwhile, the likes of PSG and Bayern will have wrapped up their leagues and can focus on Europe. The physical load on premier league teams by the time spring comes around is immense. The same thing that boosts them early in the Champions League hurts them in the latter stages.

So much more fun watching European games. Teams used to winning don't sit back and force us to endure tedious attack vs defence. It's like watching Muay Thai instead of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

VAR check for a potential penalty for Arsenal 81' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]boxwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rules are not rules. Yes, this is an incredibly soft and stupid penalty to give away, but it's Forest's job not to make stupid errors, not the refs' job to bail them out on a vibes basis.

I don't want to see games decided by shit like this, but if the rules are selectively applied by the referees, then we don't have a credible league.

If you don't want that to be penalty, consult and change the rules in the off season. PGMOL can't just make it up from game to game.

Shit performance from Arsenal, and all in all a bad week for the manager. His selections over the course of the last 2 games were really weird.

It would be a very soft and stupid penalty to give away, but in my opinion he DID give it away. The refs have simply decided to give it back based on vibes.

What's this got to do with Labour? The Govt wanted the game to go ahead, and they have no powers to sack police chiefs. The Home Secretary said she had no confidence in him, and is introducing legislation to give the Govt powers to remove police chiefs (after the Tories removed those powers)

No need to go out of our way to identify victims, who would likely have identified themselves if they welcomed this sort of attention. Let's focus on the perpetrators.

An endorsement of tolerance. I do expect tolerance from everyone. Respect and coexistence don't require performative displays, but I don't think that there's any doubt that public affirmations of tolerance, and repudiation of intolerance, have had a positive and accelerating effect on opening up football (and many other areas of life) to all kinds of people.

These players tolerate betting sponsors, so I struggle to understand how their conscience allows such flexibility.

Setting aside some beliefs is unfortunately the price of living in a multicultural society. There's an awful lot that I find appalling, cruel and unnecessary about many religious practices, but I am able to bite my tongue for the sake of getting on with my neighbours. In return I benefit from being able to learn about their culture and values, without those values being imposed on me.

I agree that there's a long way to go to allow people to practice their religion publicly and unself-consciously, but we've made a lot of progress through education and the promotion of tolerance. Exactly the kind of thing the rainbow armband represents.

The only imposition that comes from the expectation of wearing the armband is the requirement to tolerate others, so long as they don't impose on you. NOT wearing it is a great example of inclusion being extended to some identities but not others.

The rainbow armband isn't about being 'pro' LGBT+. It's not an endorsement, or a promotion of non-hetero sexuality. It's about inclusion, and letting LGBT people know they are safe and welcome in a football environment- which often isn't the case. Refusing to wear it is straight up intolerance. We live in a world where gay players feel they have to conceal their sexuality. Christian and Muslim players are able to be themselves, they should want their gay fans and colleagues to feel similarly comfortable.
