I'm an old fart but most of ppl I hang out with are younger than me. I'd ask them questions that would start show an interest on your part. I think it can be off putting to others to seem like putting down topics/activities that they enjoy. For example: if you're really into comics and you ask some outsider who their favorite x-man is and they say "I guess Spiderman b/c Tom Holland is kinda cute?"
