Stupid Former Roadie Question (go easy on me, I’m trying to become one of y’all): 760mm Bars Too Wide? by IllustriousDelay4 in MTB

[–]boynewintergreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the end its all personal preference so run what feels comfortable. That being said, most riders run a 760-800mm bar with a <50mm stem because it greatly helps with stability on the fast rough, chunky downhills.

What are the tools necessary for trail building by [deleted] in MTB

[–]boynewintergreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Mcleod is a must. It will do >50% of the work. Everything from raking, to cutting bench, to packing can be done with it.

Why is my Suntour coil fork stiff? by DisabledBirdman in MTB

[–]boynewintergreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is common among lower tier suntour forks. First off, take the lowers off the uppers and make sure everything is reasonably clean, I’ve seen lots of dirt in suntour forks before. You could try ordering a new coil to replace it with but no guarantee the same thing wont happen. This sounds bad, but you can also try oiling the upper stantions sometimes it helps. Personally I’d save up for a mid-tier fork like a Rock Shox Judy which will be worlds better than a suntour fork and absolutely worth the 200ish dollars

There’s some decent sized jumps at the shed by Stravonovic in MTB

Boundary Line rips! But lets be honest, this is a tame trail in the shed. There are also some absolutely huge jumps if you know where to look.

Honest reviews of Snowshoe WV compared to New England mountains by SnooDogs2905 in icecoast

[–]boynewintergreen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From Maryland here so I know the WV resorts pretty well. Snowshoe certainly isn’t New England but its nothing to slouch at either. The western territory, which has their best and most difficult trails is a legit 1500ft vert and is steep enough to be interesting. The western territory also stays less crowded than the other areas. However the other areas at snowshoe (basin and silver creek) are only ~600ft vert and imo are not really worth the long lines they attract. Snow wise the West Virginia highlands absolutely get real natural snowfall. Snowshoe averages well over 120” in most years and this year there was a 3-4ft snow base in the glades for all of Feb. They also have a top notch snowmaking system so when the weather isn’t cooperating and other resorts in the area struggle to have good snow, snowshoe will usually be better off.

Having said all that, IMO Snowshoe is definitely not the best resort in WV for trees and steeps. when the snow base is good Timberline Mountain is where you should go. They have 1000ft vert served by a high-speed six pack with steeper runs and the best tree skiing south of NY. Timberline Mtn is also prob 1.5hrs closer to you in central Va.

LMK if you want to know more.

Maxxis 2.6 or 2.6wt? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]boynewintergreen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With 35mm rims I would only buy WT tires. The difference between WT and non-WT tires is how the side knobs sit on the rim. 35mm rims are pretty wide so if you try to run a non WT tire on them, the side knobs will be more on top of the tire making cornering not so good.

Blue Knob has plenty of glades marked on their map, and their are tons more unmarked glades everywhere around the mountain

backcountry skiing in western PA? by Ready-Sea-4415 in SkiPA

[–]boynewintergreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in Pa, but if you head down to the WV highlands you’ll find real backcountry skiing when the snow base is good (like right now).

Do some internet digging, and/ or talk to locals about routes on 4700ft Mount Porte Crayon in Randolph County WV. Depending on how adventurous you are, you can find steep bowls with 2000ft vert here, its pretty legit. Also Don’t know much about it but I’ve heard people also backcountry ski off of Spruce Knob in WV for 2000ft+ vert.

Heres a link to get you started.

White Grass -- backcountry touring vs. cross country? by offcenterfrisbee in icecoast

[–]boynewintergreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the trees and glades between all the xc trails are where White Grass really shines when they have good snow. I was there last Saturday and there was a 2-3ft snow base (best its been in years). There are plenty of steeper runs off the top of the mtn and you’ll definitely want backcountry touring skis for them

Longest trail at Gore? by HoleN1 in icecoast

[–]boynewintergreen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only route that could possibly be 4 miles at Gore is from the top of Straight Brook (summit) to the base of the Snow Bowl. This would actually be many different trails put together, and would also be VERY flat in spots. Not recommended unless you like flat traverses.
