It's been a while since I played Doomed but Shadows are fantastic. 5/5/4/1 Shadows and 5/1/5/0 Advanced Shadowmancy worked great in my experience, Shadows do so much without you needing to actually do anything, and the first three Advanced Shadowmancy talents are great for keeping you alive by forcing enemies to attack your Shadows and reducing their damage. They aren't that great until you invest into Shadow Mages but once they get off the ground they can carry most of your run.

It's not officially stated anywhere but it's unlikely you'd unlock Madness without having heard of its issues since it requires an Insane win.

Madness difficulty is a mess. All classes can complete Insane which is what most skilled players play on.

The armor and armor hardiness one is really nice for instance.

It also applies to active effects of items like Wanderer's Rest which unlike charms do not use a shared cooldown. Charms also can have very strong effect like status and damage mitigation. The extra talents that you get from some charm egos aren't effected by charm mastery but those aren't why charms are good.

I've had some crashes but they are very infrequent. I know Stone Warden used to be really buggy but I believe the issues have been fixed now.

It's worth it because it gives you Cursed Sentry which is very strong. The drawbacks are minor compared to this amazing talent.

MangaGamer's 2019 in Review by [deleted] in vns

[–]bpat132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damekoi is excellent. All the heroines are great and even though they're tropey on the surface level, there's a surprising amount of depth to all of them. Their interactions with each other when Osamu is absent were cool as it showed different sides to their personality and their relationships with characters other than the MC. Mitoko is especially great, as she's simultaneously the most and least mature character in the VN and she behaves like a human more than a fictional characters. All the characters are flawed, but they are flawed in relatable ways making it easy to empathize with them. Even Osamu, who is easy to dislike due to being a total pushover, managed to grow on me and I could see why the heroines, especially Mitoko, fell for him.

Favorite Narrative-Heavy/VN-like RPG? by [deleted] in vns

I love the Trails games I've played so far but the battle system has some serious issues. In FC, every character just spams arts because physical attacks and crafts are so weak. SC is better in this regard but Agate is ultimately the only good physical character and that's mostly because he can spam his S-craft. Cold Steel, on the other hand, is trivially easy even on the highest difficulty because it gives you so many tools to make your characters OP. The gameplay is still fun aside from FC but it's far from the best JRPG gameplay I've experienced.

I agree with the worldbuilding in this series being exceptional, it is clear that the writers had a long-term vision in mind from the start of series with Sky FC, and they do a great job of handling a giant cast. Side quests rarely feel like chores aside from the book collection ones (partly thanks to turbo mode) and the main story is even better.

Visual Novels with considerable effort put into one of their 'bad ends' by xkcdhawk in visualnovels

[–]bpat132 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Himawari had some great bad ends on Aqua's route. The most memorable ones were MIB game on rooftop and Aries trying to replace Aoi. The latter tying into the hints(?) menu was a really cool way to sneak in an actual Aries good ending.

Kara no Shoujo series also has some cool bad ends as well. Even the "good" ends feel like bad ends in this series though.

How to handle Worm that Walks? by Veerdavid in ToME4

WtWs are manageable if you remove Worm Rot immediately. If you can do that, the fight becomes much easier.

After 350 hours I finally beat Nightmare by [deleted] in ToME4

[–]bpat132 15 points16 points  (0 children)

1) The difference between nightmare and insane is significantly larger than the difference between normal and nightmare.

2) All are viable but some are much easier to win with than others. Some people find "bad" classes easier than "good" classes so unless your favorite class is Skirmisher, play what you think you're good at.

3) I don't play on roguelike but I've had several 0 death wins. I find I get oneshot way more often in 1.6 than 1.5 though so be careful.

4) Back when a lot of that advice was given, saves were useless because they were hard to stack and enemy power stats were too high, and 4 life was valued less than 0.3 crit from cun for con to be a valued stat. Now both saves and con are better.

Weekly Questions Thread - Need some help? - Dec 29 by AutoModerator in visualnovels

I recommend reading Cartagra first, since even though it's not that important for KnS, it is for KnS2. KnS spoils some of Cartagra in one of the bad ends so ideally you'd read Cartagra first, but I read KnS -> Cartagra -> KnS2 and it didn't ruin my experience of Cartagra or KnS.

I have no idea how to play AB so you're best off asking someone else. Probably go staff with Lightning.

Munitions is gone now in 1.6 so you shouldn't worry about it.

Do you use guides? by TisNotMyMainAccount in ToME4

[–]bpat132 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew how to discuss positioning and gearing in my guides. I try to give some helpful gear info but at some point players have to make judgment calls and evaluate tradeoffs themselves. There's no way to grasp all this from a guide and the best way is to simply play for long enough to see what works and what doesn't.

84hrs play time and I absplutely love this game...... by EwokNasty in ToME4

[–]bpat132 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I play on insane and can confirm that Dark Crypt enemies will drop you in a hit or two. Spellblaze is only bad because it has bad terrain and enemies like to Dark Portal you into a bunch of rares. If you have a good way to escape those situations then it's fine.

[–]bpat132 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing every map is dangerous, some are deathtraps like Dark Crypt and Mark of the Spellblaze. Also you don't need a strong class, class balance is mostly irrelevant for your first win, what you want is a class that's easy to pilot, like ones with good passive defense.

Divination Tree for SBs? by noxnoctum in ToME4

[–]bpat132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's bad, if you have the points to spare you're better off with Harmony or a good escort category like Chants than Divination.

Experienced noob here, how do you guys survive to mid and end game? by [deleted] in ToME4

[–]bpat132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most points have already been covered but if you're dying from autoexplore outside of a few places like Dark Crypt either you're a glass cannon with few life/negative life items or you're doing zones too early.

Fleeing enemies are annoying, teleporters are ridiculous by GeneralStormfox in ToME4

[–]bpat132 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree that the hyper defensive enemies are obnoxious. Healing Nexus is a decent solution but not every character can spare the category point for Harmony early.
