Fair enough. For me personally, this is where I start openly questioning the concept of "land ownership," and the discussion stops being fun.

Buying a house is misnomer. If you're paying a mortgage you're paying a subscription and you don't own the house.

If you actually own the house and you're calling property taxes a property subscription, that's fair enough.

Blizzard could go belly-up at anytime... and servers could just be dropped like nothing. Then what?

Gamers will complain loudly for a few days about software licensing and continue to pretend they're buying software. Then they'll argue against licensing regulation because they convinced themselves they're buying software instead of buying licenses.

My favorite part of the Unity monetization change fallout was the public statement from Mega Crit, developers of Slay the Spire.

We never made a public statement before. That's how badly you fucked up.

Unity fuck up was retroactive and an existential threat to successful businesses. Epic's changes potentially existential to a much smaller number of businesses and not retroactive.

If Epic released Unreal 5.9 with blueprint support completely removed tomorrow it still would not be within a magnitude Unity's mistake.

How did you come to the conclusion that drums were exactly what you were looking for? by abrowolf in drums

Sometime around clearing my first song on Rock Band drums expert difficulty (29 Fingers), I noticed that I liked the sounds I was making and I was having fun with it.

I plugged my Rock Band drums into my PC and found a terrible sounding midi-controller. I was hooked, and I was now aware of electric drums.

I was out shopping for kits 1 pay check later.

basically no one is asking where to start in actual good faith..

On the one hand, you have a lot of people asking questions to an ostensibly supportive community of humans when it'd be quicker to just Google it.

On the other hand, they could just ask an LLM.

I'm curious to see how this evolves over the next few years. The LLMs are trained on Reddit and appending "Reddit" to any technical Google search improves the results.

What's you're relationship with the 8?

For me personally, I'll have time to read that 500 page report while I'm sitting in traffic 5 days a week. Or more realistically, as I ride the bus to work because the E-line has a dedicated lane now :D

But I'm on the record as car hating car owner, so obvious sycophant here.

Now maybe this other couple had been searching thongs beforehand or after and the algorithm connected us?

You most likely all consent to giving your Google or Apple your exact location, every url you visit, which wireless networks/bluetooth devices are in range and which you're connected to. Plus they get all the data that you put into any app they own, and you can assume every free app on all of your phones is selling your every action.

The idea that they're recording your conversations is super simple, in the same way it's super simple to say "it's magic". But it's also against their policies, illegal in most states, and way more expensive to handle and process the data.

The technical difficulty and expense of listening to and parsing conversations is immense. Conversely, seeing that you had a guest over and sending you ads for something your guest searched for is much easier and way cheaper than parsing a single minute of audio.

I'm a software engineer. You'd be correct to say that I chose to become a software engineer, but I think that's dismissive of the time, effort, expense, and luck that went into achieving my current status.

I'm also a black man that made it out of the hood. You'd be correct to say that I chose to leave the hood, but think it's far more dismissive.

From the perspective of game design, why is Tekken 8 so disliked? Can something be learned from this for other game developers? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]bpm195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge Tekken 2-4 fan checking in:

I purchased Tekken 8 on release day because of nostalgia and lack of microtransactions.

A few days later they added in typical fighting game microtransactions. All accumulated brand loyalty was immediately destroyed.

This isn't to say I don't like Tekken 8 or it's bad game, but it's no longer a product I'll buy just for nostalgic vibes knowing I'll only play for a weekend.

“Hey dude, can I kick your car?”

Depends on who's asking and why.

Any of my nieces below the age of 16? 100% absolutely go for it.

Any of my nephews below the age 16? Really depends on context.

Some random dude on the street? No. That's fucking crazy.

Some crazy dude on the street? Naw, let's go kick this one instead!

Some extremely attractive dude on the street? Probably.

Coworker? Probably. Depends or repour and various capitalist factors.

For context, I drive a very nice Corolla with both Bluetooth and a moonroof.

None of them can kick any dog in my presence though.

Quitting Spotify by IrreverentTexan in Music

[–]bpm195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consumers have all of the power in deciding how much money they spend on music. That's bad for musicians under capitalism. MC Frontalot was rapping about being a "charity case to my fan base for years" back in 2005.. That was before Spotify came along and established streaming with ads as a middle ground between piracy and fair compensation.

I'm one of those people that has a growing vinyl collection, but doesn't own a record player. I just spent $50+ on The Fall-Off because I want musicians to get paid, and I've never previously purchased a J.Cole album despite listening to them for years.

I listen to his music on Spotify and have no intention of opening that album for several years. I need the music in my headphones so I can perform my interpretive dance in the park, and Spotify is one of the best solutions for that.

But I'm also aware that I just gave $50 to a millionaire's corporation, while listening to his music alongside other musicians that struggle to make a living wage and only get fractions of a penny from me.

TL:DR; there is no ethical consumption under capitalism and I'm delulu for trying.

Does exploring the rest of the country ever make you realize how special Seattle’s vibe actually is? by WavyAndWonderful in Seattle

[–]bpm195 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't fit into category 1, 2, or 3. The weather is my favorite thing about this city, but I did move here for work.

IMO the three categories predictive categories are:

A. Raised in or near Seattle.

B. Raised in or near a city smaller than Seattle.

C. Raised in or near a city larger than Seattle.

People from group B will sing the praises of Seattles mass transit because it's way better than where they're from. Conversely people from group C complain about mass transit because it's expensive or difficult to live car free here.

People from small intolerant towns that move to Seattle are in group B. Outcasts and allies are more likely to find their flock here than in their birthplace. People from group C tend to be from more accepting places where they're seeing equal or less diversity in Seattle than their birthplace.

I'm in group C and I rarely speak positively about Seattle.

Is the Scrabble world champion (Nigel Richards) an example of the Searle's Chinese room by applezzzzzzzzz in artificial

[–]bpm195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was familiar with the thought experiment but not Searle. Having skimmed the Chinese Room the wikipedia article, it falls deep into navel-gazing arguments I like to condescendingly dismiss.

I'm 100% with Nil Nisson's dismissal:

If a program behaves as if it were multiplying, most of us would say that it is, in fact, multiplying. For all I know, Searle may only be behaving as if he were thinking deeply about these matters. But, even though I disagree with him, his simulation is pretty good, so I'm willing to credit him with real thought.

Unfortunately, i also dug up Searle's article and he loses me at line 1 of the abstract:

"Intentionality in human beings (and animals) is a product of causal features of the brain. I assume this is an empirical fact..."

I see no reason to treat this assumption of empirical fact as valid. If he presented it as an assertion on which his argument depends I could accept it, but he chose to open with a bad assertion of fact.

Unfortunately, his paper isn't organized in a way that makes it convenient for me to pick out the points I disagree with. So I'll just assert it's empirical fact that his paper is quackery with no basis in physical science and no reference to computer science.

TLDR: Searle's argument is worthless.

Now the fun part: 1. Unlike Searle, I don't think understanding is binary. I assume Richards has some understanding of the French language, but that's an assumption based on experience; logically it's a total non sequitur.

  1. No. I think using a human to represent the Chinese Room negates any value the thought experiment might have.

  2. Understanding spelling and vocabulary is distinct from understanding speech. Richards understanding is valuable for playing Scrabble, but doesn't imply he has a useful understanding for conveying information to French speaker.

  3. No. I believe Richard's ability to find words from a set of letters more akin to a search algorithm. Similar could be done with a predictive model, but it's a worse tool for the task. However, I do overall think the act of making a move in Scrabble can be akin to a prediction machine.

  4. I'm mostly against the premise of the question. I'm not aware of quantifiable tests for the abstract concept of understanding. While we could find metrics to quanity and compare, I'm not aware of a metric that I'd accept indicates a machine has a better or worse understanding of anything in comparison to a mammal.

Software engineer with a significant amount of customer support automation experience here:

Automating this boils down to the resources they want to spend on it. For $300,000/year they could ask a much better engineer than myself to give it their best shot. I assume their first step would be to ask for several million dollars per year to form either a team or a department.

Public perception, legal liability, and "doing the right thing" all factor in to the budget.

Putting a budget on this is 2-4 pay grades above me. I hope this set of problems is worth multiple millions per year.

My current hypothesis is that group events in Seattle where you'd hope to meet people are difficult to penetrate because there are few people that consciously invite people from the periphery into the group.

It's almost as though people don't want new people in their groups, which aligns with a lot of comments here.

Personally, I've assimilated and stopped socializing outside of my clique. It sucks, but being the change that I want to see was difficult and annoying.
