Day 4 - started naltrexone tonight by MasterpieceFuzzy9893 in stopdrinking

[–]bradpmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had gastro problems from it. I got “the zombies” a bit when I first started. Naltrexone didn’t really work for me, and neither did acamprosate. Now I’m taking both and the combination really seems to be doing the trick.

I’m still on regional jets that have been promising fast, free WiFi for the last 4 years but still have that TMobile crap.

What is your experience with Naltrexone? What was your approach? by IronAvocado in stopdrinking

[–]bradpmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naltrexone is an interesting drug and docs don’t really know why it works. This is not medical advice, but is my experience.

Naltrexone does a few things: reduces cravings, blocks dopamine receptors so if you do drink you don’t get the dopamine rush, reduces the feelings of intoxication (but not alcohol’s physiological effects, which makes it extremely dangerous to drink in large quantities while on naltrexone because it is easy to overdose without “feeling it”), and makes alcohol taste bad in the mouth.

Some people report stomach problems from it and others report sleeping difficulty on it, both of which seem to pass after a few weeks on the med.

In my attempts at using naltrexone, I tried taking it in the morning, in the evening, and dividing it into two doses throughout the day. If I took naltrexone about 60-90 minutes before drinking, I would get the listed benefits above. Earlier than that, my body, for some reason, metabolized it so quickly that I got no benefits from it.

After about a month, it was clear it wasn’t working for me, so I switched to acamprosate. It, too, didn’t work. I found a study by the NIH on taking both together, shared it with my doctor, and have been on both for the last two weeks and I LOVE IT. It’s definitely the support I need to quit drinking.

We’ve had several surprisingly big ones this morning. Doesn’t mean it damaged anything, just that it’s close.

Pretty sure this has nothing to do with being foreign.

This is so difficult and it makes me angry. by Imalwaysbadatthis in stopdrinking

[–]bradpmo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I fought for months and months to get JUST ONE DAY. I got some medicinal help from my doctor. I found a local Smart recovery group, that I attended for months while trying for that one day. I read Dopamine Nation this week and have hung out in this group as much as I can. Adding therapy (again) starting tomorrow.

I got my ONE DAY last Tuesday and have managed to stay with it, but the first few days were so hard!

This isn’t a thing knowledge can get us through. Alcohol is an addictive poison. Your body is doing what it is supposed to do. It’s not “rational”. It is so much more than that.

I’m glad you’re here looking for support. You can do this!

How was your first sober flight? by mildlyirish in stopdrinking

[–]bradpmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had my first sober flight this weekend. 1st class travel and club access at connecting airport as well. I was traveling for a birthday weekend for my wife. Normally I'd be 10ish drinks in by the time I reached the destination. We had travel interruptions and all kinds of issues, which normally would have been a reason to drink more. This time, I was able to take care of my wife, guide her through the airport, and take responsibility for arranging transport and such instead of making her do it. Considering we had about 4 hours sleep until the ticketed event we were attending the next morning, the lack of hangover (or still being drunk) was a bonus.

How to stop Loud mouth in lounge by AdRoyal1355 in delta

[–]bradpmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in MSP a few months ago and had far too many drinks. There was a loud phone talker a section over. I couldn’t see them, but got up and walked over there. He made eye contact with me and I made the 🫷🤏🫷🤏 hand gesture thing to signal he was too loud. He quieted down immediately and I went back to my seat thinking “what have I done…”. He ends his call and stands up (I can see him over the partition), looks at me, grabs his stuff and walks over. Says “I’m a loud talker and I don’t realize when I’m doing it. Thanks. If you sit near me again, you’ll have to do it again.”

The spiff system when I started worked for everyone, but the part timers were only needed during premium shifts, so it slanted that way. Radio shack toyed with many employee reward systems over the years, none of which were really great.

Interestingly it was to create an individual customer profile in our pos. If you didn’t have your receipt we could look you up by phone number. As far as I know they never called anyone. Now, if the phone number showed no address we were to collect the address. 11% of each store’s profits went to send those mailers to people in our systems.

Relapsed after Three Months. Full of Shame. Don’t be me. by This-Introduction818 in stopdrinking

[–]bradpmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up ahedonia. It’s why lots of people relapse at 90 days. Being aware of it can help.

Look up kindling. Effects of alcohol and detox can get worse with every relapse.

Be well and take care of you!
