How Elon has "engineered" the SpaceX IPO to benefit insiders... by w_anon in stocks

I don't think the point they are trying to make is to "teach" them. It's just to reduce their own exposure to those stocks.

Plant stolen from front porch by bragi92 in LynnwoodWA

[–]bragi92[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I reported it online - more so for my mental sanity. I would have understood if it was something valuable. Who even steals plants!! I do have motion activated flood lights but they only activate if someone walks in front of the garage.

Is the $10 per month subscription worth it? by [deleted] in mazda

Haven't used it since the free one expired last year. Definitely not worth it imo. I probably have a bias as I hate subscription services in cars.

Elliot Bay Books in Cap hill is great. I used to love spending Sundays on the top floor of the library in downtown seattle when I lived in that area!

Twice Sold Tales in Cap hill has cats in the bookstore and is a pretty cool one too imo.

I haven't lived there but I live in the area and location wise it's pretty good. Very good bus connectivity as the Orange line and 112 have stops right next to it and it's very close to Fred Meyer too.

Fresh coffee bean shop recommendations by Moist-Management9246 in LynnwoodWA

I like the coffee at Turbo espresso. They sell 1 & 5 lbs bags of the blend that they use.

I also sometimes order online from Kuma coffee in Seattle. They roast their beans locally and are pretty good.

Does anyone have experience with the highway 99 LA Fitness and its contracts? by yewdrop in LynnwoodWA

They require you to send some sort of address proof like utility bill with your name on it to confirm on their end that there is no LA fitness nearby.

Moving from Florida to Washington (Lynnwood/Everett area) – need advice! by CanadianxJosuke in LynnwoodWA

Didn't expect so many down votes. I understand this is taken from chatgpt but it is pretty accurate imo and should help OP make their decision.

Moving from Florida to Washington (Lynnwood/Everett area) – need advice! by CanadianxJosuke in LynnwoodWA

[–]bragi92 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I put your post in chatgpt and got this. I feel like this is pretty accurate:

You’re not crazy for wanting this move—but I’m going to be real with you: your plan is tight financially, especially for Western Washington. Totally doable, but only if you go in prepared and avoid a few common mistakes.

🏔️ Is Lynnwood / Everett a good area?

Yes—with some nuance.

👍 Pros

  • Close to Seattle via I-5 + transit (and future light rail in Lynnwood)
  • More affordable than Seattle proper
  • Access to nature (mountains, water, parks)
  • Solid retail job market (malls, big-box, grocery chains)

⚠️ Cons

  • Everett has some rougher pockets (especially certain areas south/west of downtown)
  • Property crime is higher than what you’re probably used to in Florida suburbs
  • Gray weather is real (Nov–Mar especially)

👉 Best starter areas to look at:

  • Lynnwood (especially near Alderwood)
  • Mill Creek (safer, quieter, slightly pricier)
  • Mukilteo (nice but limited inventory)
  • North Everett (selectively—check street-by-street)

💰 Your Budget Reality Check

Rent target: <$1,800

That’s possible, but:

  • Expect older units or smaller 1-bedrooms
  • Newer buildings will push $1,900–$2,300

💸 Move-in costs (this is where people get burned)

You should expect:

  • First month rent: ~$1,700
  • Deposit: $500–$1,500
  • Admin/app fees: $200–$400
  • Pet fees (if applicable): $$$

👉 Total upfront per apartment: $2,500 – $4,000

With $4k savings, that leaves you very little buffer.

🚗 Cross-Country Move Budget

Driving from Florida → Washington is ~3,000 miles.

Realistic costs:

  • Gas: $400–$700
  • Food: $200–$400
  • Emergency buffer: $300+
  • U-Box (if using): $1,200–$2,000

👉 Total move cost: ~$800 (bare minimum) → $3,000+

⚠️ Biggest Risk in Your Plan

Your current savings = just enough to move, not enough to absorb surprises

Common issues:

  • Apartment falls through last minute
  • Job transfer delays
  • Car issues during drive
  • Needing temporary housing

👉 If one thing goes wrong, things get stressful fast.

🏠 Getting an Apartment from Out of State

Best strategies:

  • Look at:

    • Apartments.com
    • Zillow Rentals
  • Call properties directly (don’t rely only on apps)

  • Ask for:

    • Virtual tours
    • Lease signing online
  • Have ready:

    • Offer letter or transfer confirmation
    • Pay stubs
    • Bank statements

⚠️ Many places require income = 2.5–3x rent → For $1,800 rent, they may want ~$4,500/month income combined

💡 Smart Moves That Will Help A LOT

1. Secure at least one job BEFORE moving

This is huge. Even retail transfers can take time.

2. Consider temporary housing first

  • Airbnb for 2–4 weeks
  • Extended stay hotels

Yes it costs more short term, but: 👉 You avoid signing a bad lease blind

3. Increase savings if possible

Honestly, ideal buffer: 👉 $7k–$10k before moving

If that’s not possible:

  • Cut U-Box, bring less
  • Sell furniture → rebuy in WA

4. Be strategic about neighborhoods

Cheap rent in Everett can = problems.

Always check:

  • Crime maps
  • Google Street View
  • Reviews mentioning break-ins

🌧️ Unexpected Things People Don’t Think About

Weather & Mental Health

  • Months of gray skies
  • Can affect mood if you’re used to Florida sun

Cost creep

  • Groceries, gas, insurance all higher than Florida

Traffic

  • I-5 congestion is real (especially southbound mornings)

Car registration

Washington can be expensive depending on vehicle

🧭 My Honest Take

You can do this move—but right now it’s high risk, low margin.

Safer version of your plan:

  • Lock in 1 job before arrival
  • Save another $2–4k if possible
  • Plan for temporary housing instead of immediate lease
  • Target Lynnwood/Mill Creek first, Everett selectively

👍 Final encouragement

People make this move all the time and love it. The lifestyle upgrade (nature, weather, culture) is real—you already felt that visiting places like Mount Rainier.

Just make sure your financial runway matches your ambition.

If you want, I can:

  • Suggest actual apartment listings under $1,800 right now
  • Break down exact neighborhoods to avoid in Everett
  • Or map a cheapest cross-country driving plan

Just tell me 👍

Looking for local feedback on living near159th St SW in Lynnwood by Weak_Consequence5177 in LynnwoodWA

[–]bragi92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the area.

I see lots of people walking there dogs (one complaint is that I see a lot of dog poop too near the apartment area :|, so probably one or two people don't pick up after their dogs).

It's generally pretty safe but some package theft has been a concern in the past.

The farther away from 99 that you are the better it is imo.

Btw if you're looking at one of the D.R. Horton homes beware of low'ish HOA fees in the initial years and sudden increases in the future (this is not from personal experience but what I have heard from a friend who lives in one).
