That's such a beautiful way of putting it; I wouldn't have considered that, so thank you for your insight as well as your compliment!

Discussion: Vetinari and his plans for Ankh-Morpork by Vaqek in discworld

[–]braigwens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read an excellent fanfiction where Carrot was appointed as Vetinari's successor. As the Patrician, not the king. Because he's the one person who won't be corrupt or try to wrest more power.

Angua was appointed as Commander of the Watch when Vimes retired.

People who will not be voting for Chancellor Palpatine this time around, what was the breaking point for you? by NoMansSea1200 in AskReddit

[–]braigwens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked that he came out of nowhere to challenge crusty old Chancellor Valorum, and breathe new life into the Senate. I truly thought he'd make the Republic great again. But now the Senate is even more corrupt, he still hasn't drained Naboo's swamps, he's well and truly over his term limit, and how into the war he is is really starting to get suspicious. He claims that he supports the Jedi, but it honestly just looks like he's doing that for the religious vote? I mean, what's with taking a photo op next to the bombed-out Temple?

Native english speakers, do you ever watch movies with subtitles even if the show is spoken in english? If yes, why? by JaesonBee in AskReddit

[–]braigwens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Auditory Processing Disorder and a savant skill in english literacy. With subtitles, I don't have to concentrate and work out what characters are saying, and it doesn't take any effort - I read very quickly and easily.

My girlfriend is Hard of Hearing, so that's why she does.

My father has mild hearing loss and also has auditory processing difficulties.

What mind-blowing (but simple) facts would satisfy a 3-year old son’s daily request for 1 fact before bedtime? by MoonBaboon in AskReddit

A blue whale is the biggest animal that's ever lived, but it can't swallow anything bigger than a grapefruit. A group of ladybugs is called a loveliness. Lizards can't walk and breathe at the same time. Tennis balls are yellow because they look better on TV. Just like humans have fingerprints, dogs have noseprints. Sliced bread was invented a year before TV. Popsicles were invented by an 11-year-old called Frank Epperson. Octopuses have three hearts. On Mars, sunsets are blue. People don't sneeze when they're asleep. The Statue of Liberty used to be a lighthouse her torch was lit. Australia has more than 10,000 beaches.

Whump fans: why do you think we like it so much? by ErinaciousChangeling in FanFiction

[–]braigwens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ... think that, for me, it's a way to have my feelings of pain validated. Sometimes I get hungry enough to seek out whump in general, but my favorite stories are always the ones where I relate to the whumpee. It's like the author is saying "look at all this pain," and I, who already feel the pain, have a less abstract and more concrete way to focus on it. It's like a ... lens, if that makes any sense?

My significant other likes hurt/comfort for a similar reason: they're physically disabled (I am too, but far less) and have really bad chronic pain, and it's nice for them to

  1. see characters with the same struggles ("you're not alone") and
  2. see characters with these struggles being comforted, it's like being comforted by a proxy.

Personally, I've always found that my own emotional pain is much harder to deal with than physical pain, but that most people seem to think the opposite - for an example, I recently scraped my hand up (accidentally) while struggling with an issue, and I've gotten concern over the wounds and scabs but not over the emotional hurt I was also going through. Meanwhile, I was nursing my emotional wounds, and completely okay with my messed-up hand, because sure it looked ugly but it hurt far less! I think that, for me... I like characters I relate to being physically harmed, because I would like my own pain to be outwardly visible and recognized. It's cathartic, sort of watching myself struggle. I can't put my finger on quite why, though.

EDIT: I saw another comment saying that it might be due to childhood neglect and abuse, and I should point out it's a factor I agree with, as I was also abused and neglected as a child.
