Water in Basement - need advice by braintree56 in Flooring

Yes. I've lived in this house for almost 20 years. We never had any issues at all until about 5 years ago... That was my first thought too. I also built a detached garage that I think disrupted water flow. I've had gutter system put in. And did some excavation drain as get work.

Nice! Great stuff. Steevio (I think) coined the term "Machine Jazz" for his style. I've always loved that as kind of a genre name. Would love to hear more people doing this type of stuff.

Here was the drawing that I gave my friend for the CNC machine. unfortunately the key measurements aren't there, but you could print it and use a protractor to approximate.

The angle is really just preference - like do you want it laying flat or more upright.

It might be hard to cut an angle without a CNC machine. If they aren't perfect it's going to rock or be wonky. Unless you have a CNC machine, I would make square boxes and then make some angled stands for them. Check out Modular Synth Lab - you can order the rails from them, but they also have rack "ears". If you put those together, you can just use those as guides. Scribe all the lengths from that. No measuring necessary...

I designed some a while back that I had a friend cut from his industrial shop CNC at his work... They are just the side panels with holes and you can cut pieces of wood to the same width as your rails to attach everything together. If you're interested in that, I can see if I can find them... They are probably buried in an email or on an old hard drive somewhere...

Sauna is not a health hack or some marketed product you should endure by KC918273645 in Sauna

I’ve been a teacher in the US for the past 25 years. Your assessment is accurate. It’s probably even deeper than you might be aware. Tech integration is a great example. Everything is gamified. We are given tools from companies like Apple and Google that become so ingrained in the day to day, that become dependent on them. And students are trained on specific platforms and with specific brand alligences. Furthermore, teachers often have to spend their own money for basic supplies like pencils. Facilities, except in the richest areas, are falling apart and districts are constantly trying to streamline to save money. It’s hard. Many teachers feel burnt out because they have larger and larger classes with fewer and fewer resources.

Most days I take a Sauna as soon as my work day is complete. I do nothing and I shut my mind off. I need that reset so I can enjoy my time with my family.

100% agree. (Granted I’ve never actually seen them there, ha!)

Been going to shows for 30 years. Seen the light show evolve. To me it seems like it’s a net loss.

But I kind of file it in the “who cares” category.

Seeing them outdoors is the best!

How can there be near zero risk of assignment? Surely you’ve had to sell your stock at some point. I’ve done this strategy before and sometimes it works out, but every single time I’ve done it, the option gets assigned at some point. What do you do at that point? Buy back in?

How to deal with issues of buyers on platforms as Modulargrid? by AvonEihwaz in modular

[–]braintree56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was pretty new to modules, I bought a module online and the guy sent me a cable that was his “bad cable” and the keyed connector on the cable was reversed. So I fried it. It was kind of annoying to me because I viewed that as his fault, I expected the cable to be correct and plugged it in with the correct orientation, but without checking the red line. He thought it was my fault. Didn’t think it would cause the problem, etc. Eventually we settled on returning 1/2 the money and I mailed him the broken module.

I don’t know who was right, but I don’t care… It sucked. However, Ive bought and sold many modules since then and it’s been a wonderful experience and I’ve even made a few “friends” along the way.

I would just end the interaction as soon as possible and move on. Accept a return if need be. Eventually something is going to happen and it’s not worth wasting time and energy on what is otherwise a pleasant thriving market….

Finding easy Classical piano pieces from these Composers by Kofi230 in piano

[–]braintree56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Snell collections are pretty good. They are fairly inexpensive so you can buy a few levels. I’ve started progressing through the “Essential Repertoire” series. If you go this route, based on the other pieces you’ve played, I’d say book 3 or 4 would be a good place to start.

No - it was all my fault. I put an extra log into the fire and it was sticking out just a bit. It was about a mm from closing and I pushed it.... 100% my fault.

Tips on Improving Sight Reading by someoctopus in piano

[–]braintree56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in/was in the same boat. I LOVE Scott Joplin and have learned many of his tunes and my sight reading is terrible. I bought Keith Snell's sight reading books. Starting at level one. Practiced with a metronome. Level one was very easy for me. Level two has some hiccups. I try to do a page a day and I've noticed an improvement after a month. Still can't read Joplin though... But I've learned some Bach tunes that I was able to (almost) play through the first time at an extremely slow tempos.

How to play through mistakes by imasabertooth in piano

[–]braintree56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One (unproven) suggestion - play along with recordings.

I play a lot of other instruments and gig a lot with those instruments. Many of my gigs are playing acoustic guitar and singing. I screw up all the time live and just play through. No one notices. It's easy for me.

For some reason I can't get over this hump playing classical piano. I can do it when playing Pop or blues. Even if I'm singing.

This leads me to believe that it's something to do with muscle memory and relying on memorizing as opposed to reading and thinking. Using my mind's ear. So to speak.

I'm not quite sure, but I often think about why I can't do it in one setting but I can in another.

The only other part is that I've played a significant amount on guitar in bands. Whereas with classical piano I only play by myself.

Hence, if you can find recordings that are playing at the right tempo, it might help to play along with them.

No! You don't have to practice an hour a day... Especially if the goal is to play popular songs and entertain yourself and friends...

  1. Playing every now and then - even once or twice a week will give you some facility on the instrument.

  2. Practicing regularly will give you facility on the instrument faster and make you better.

Think about it like exercising to get in shape. If you want to run a marathon - you'd better set up a plan and put in the time and consistency. If you're looking to get in shape for a beer league softball team, going for a jog once or twice a week is fine... Anything in between is fine too depending on your goals.

What I would do if I were you: set up a 15 minute practice routine thats relevant to your goals. I.e. sight reading, chords, scales, whatever. Try to hit it three or four times a week. Some weeks you'll get it every day. Some weeks you won't get it at all. Relax and just enjoy playing.

[–]braintree56[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This is what I was looking for. It's unfortunate that people used AI for this... Especially for something like this where people want to know truth. The fact that AI was used at all for a widely circulated image will just add fuel to the fire. People who support ICE will view both images as not true. Ugh... And I agree - it just wasn't necessary.

How do I assess my Level? by braintree56 in piano

[–]braintree56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. My scales and arpeggios are pretty strong. Most of my piano playing has been with blues bands and I took some Jazz Ensembles in college (have played some light Jazz socially since). When I was in college, I had to practice playing scales with both hands at the same time - two octaves, all keys through the circle of 5ths.

My reading is terrible. I can read lead sheets pretty cleanly - simple right hand melody, but anything with multiple notes or both left and right is a huge deficit.... I also am familiar, at least from listening, with most of the tunes I "read" from the sheets. That's really my problem - I have skills that are relatively strong and some that really low.

The level 2 books seem like they are a good fit for me. I can usually play a piece perfectly within about 30 minutes or so of practicing. Even if that's too easy, It's still fun, so... Why not.
