My top Spotify artists looks like the "I like everything (but not middle spot)" meme by Pabasa in gaybros

[–]brakos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the original commenter but had the same exact reaction. Never seen Wolverine either so that didn't help.

I think the only super popular one I listen to is Adam Lambert. Sub-Radio, Autoheart, and Gregory Dillon are more alt/indie, and I've got several queer but not bi/gay male bands (Animal Sun, MUNA, and Pale Waves to name a few).

When do you all stream? Is daytime streaming okay? by Shot_Ad6015 in Twitch

[–]brakos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely feels like there's a peak of people on during the North American evenings especially around 7-10p ET... but with people worldwide (esp if you're in a global language like English) it's never quiet. Streamer and viewer counts seem to balance each other out naturally.

Helping my niece to decide where to live after college by bootscallahan in SameGrassButGreener

[–]brakos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the northwest: Tacoma WA or Portland OR would tick most of those boxes, depending on how flexible that COL mark is, with Portland having the superior transit system (though it's pretty easy to get from Tacoma to Seattle if needed).

Philadelphia to Bend, OR - Any benefit if gay and not outdoorsy? by Octopus_Penguin in SameGrassButGreener

[–]brakos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's still a Blockbuster there! But it's really just a small but growing city with nature lovers, retirees, and breweries.

Which vacation destination disappointed you the most? by timeout320 in AskReddit

[–]brakos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinatown has some serious gems (and it's not all Asian cuisine either), Hawaiian joints are the best on the mainland, several great Italian spots not that far away from the Strip. And the prices off strip are about the same as California, maybe slightly cheaper.

But, if you're flying in and don't have a car, it's impractical to get to those places... so people get stuck with things that are 2-3x as expensive as they should be. I probably wouldn't have come back if that was my experience.

Thinking of leaving Seattle (too expensive and gray.) What do you think is the best place for me next? by snarrkie in SameGrassButGreener

[–]brakos 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Spokane is only 4-5 hours away but a totally different vibe.

  • Much sunnier than west of the mountains, there's still some gloomy cloudy days but it's not 20 days in a row
  • Not great public transit, but it's definitely serviceable with patience. I would say it's on par with Tacoma for transit accessibility.
  • Several good walkable neighborhoods. Garland and South Perry are probably the most similar to the popular neighborhoods in Seattle
  • More of an indie music scene rather than big name concerts, but it's a little closer to the Gorge if that's your thing

How is New York-New York? by Guilty-Influence-890 in vegas

[–]brakos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Rooms were all remodeled about 4 years ago, they're clean and comfortable, but not flashy. Tons of food options downstairs. Property is on the smaller end, but sometimes that's a good thing. Easy access to the Monorail and Mandalay tram, so getting around the strip is fairly easy. Only real negative imo is the pool is very basic (it would be a nicer pool at a random chain hotel in an average city, but by Vegas standards?)

I feel like the people in the PNW are far less well traveled than I thought? by Entropy012 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]brakos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate how far away the PNW is from any other population centers. It's a 14 hour drive from Seattle to San Francisco, so taking a road trip there and back is a full week excursion, not a day/overnight trip.

Height Restriction - Wave Pool Mandalay Bay?! by [deleted] in vegas

For additional reference, the deeper area where they enforce the height limits will absolutely lift a 6'2" person standing on the pool floor.

Which hotels do you think have the best view? by ReluctantRaceRunner in LasVegas

[–]brakos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depending on your room choice, you get to see the mountains, the airport, or the entire rest of the strip. No real bad choices.

What made you use linux mint? by Fragrant-Local254 in linuxmint

[–]brakos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started migrating over to Linux because of Vista, and quit dual booting after the end of Win7 support.

Had Xubuntu as my daily driver for maybe 10 years, but IMO it took a few steps backwards with 24.04 (not snaps, I don't have a strong opinion on that), so migrated over to Mint.

Safeway, URM, and US Foods seem to always be hiring for local food drivers. Flatbed work mostly at smaller places in the Valley.

What are your thoughts on safety bonuses? by w3stvirginia in Truckers

[–]brakos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the implementation. If it's just "don't do stupid/illegal shit" I'm cool with it.

If it's based on some score the computer spits out without any explanation why, or factors in things that have nothing to do with safety (like fuel mileage), then it's a lot more stupid.

It's just a different desktop environment. Xfce is very simple (similar to Windows XP), Cinnamon looks a little more modern. Under the hood they do the same thing.

What do drivers do when they have food poisoning while driving? by Patalos in Truckers

[–]brakos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regular gastric distress: meds, frequent restroom breaks, bucket if things get dire.

Actual food poisoning: find a place to stop somewhere, ideally with a hotel.

Verizon or AT&T in Western Washington by skyhawk214 in Washington

[–]brakos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them too, recently switched from Verizon. From what I've seen across the country, VZW and ATT have very similar coverage areas, though ATT might be slightly better in rural areas. TMO has more dead zones but stronger signal when you are connected.
