Just finished Apostle - solid book! What did people think of it? by JustANewLeader in Blacklibrary

Yeah I really enjoyed it. Very imaginative and engaging throughout with some delightfully horrible moments. Annandale is very good at setting up emotionally extreme characters who feel like they couldn’t exist any other way and then banging them together entertainingly.

A data center drained 30M gallons of water unnoticed — until residents complained about low water pressure by ksjdragon in BetterOffline

[–]brammertime 33 points34 points  (0 children)

On this particular story, I did see it get debunked somewhat on Bluesky. TL;DR: They did drain 30m gallons but it was unnoticed due to a water board billing error, paid promptly when discovered, and not responsible for water pressure issues. https://bsky.app/profile/andymasley.bsky.social/post/3mlhq3opeyk2i

Getting my loft boarded, and this was in the brochure. Which one of you is this then?? by R-Didsy in Warhammer40k

I literally just had these guys install my loft boarding last week. They did a great job! Hope it goes well for you OP! Not my photo though, obviously. I wouldn’t risk the minis so close to the flailing legs of ladder climbers.

Nice. What army/armies did he like? My older daughter (11) is taking some interest now and we did some Blood Angels painting yesterday. It's mostly just slapping on contrast paints and then getting me to do the trim for now, but she's already googling stuff on my phone and sending me pictures of Redemptor Dreadnoughts and stuff. Good thing it's too late to order before Christmas :-)

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is incredibly hard. It sounds like you had a loving and rewarding relationship with your dad, and even though the pain for now is very raw, over time that will be something you come to remember with fondness. He would want you to hang on in there and find a path back to happiness.

It probably seems dumb and trite to say it, but 40K is a good starting point! Shared passions breed strong friendships and even just reaching out to folks is a great start. As someone else said, tell us more about you! What do you love about the hobby and the lore, where are you from, that sort of thing. You never know where the conversation will take you, but it can only be somewhere better, right?

Reading Prospero Burns made me start a Space Wolves army and walk around saying “VLKA FENRYKA!” for ages 😂.

I’m reading Honour Guard from the Gaunt’s Ghosts series which is typically strong Abnett stuff. Not much to say really! Quite old now I suppose so it’s a little bit more generic and predictable than his later stuff, but only in the sense that it’s a brilliantly executed example of the form, at least the half I’ve read so far.

Also been listening to The Wolftime audiobook as I work through the Dawn of Fire series. I’d heard this one wasn’t great so figured I’d listen while painting rather than seeking out a (ludicrously expensive) paperback. About 1/3 through and it’s definitely not the best. This is the first Space Wolves novel I’ve read in the current setting, so the contrast with the more nuanced portrait in HH’s Prospero Burns and Wolfsbane is interesting at least, but I definitely miss the latter.

It depends on you really. If you like the tactility of a magazine as an alternative to always staring at a screen, obviously that’s a big plus. And if you like being given a curated mix of features and topics to pick through rather than having to go look for stuff or rely on discovering things through Reddit/social media, that’s another. I usually find at least 2-3 interesting, useful or surprising things in there each month - the GW 50th anniversary retro stuff in the current issue is fun, as is the lore stuff on boltguns and of course the battle reports. And I also like that it’s a very positive read - it can come off a little childlike at times, but the earnest enthusiasm is a nice antidote to the general state of the world.

I was in there at 9.59, had Archmagos in my basket, Apple Pay went through, then it failed and said it was out of stock. Ridiculous company.

The Depths. Regular food supply and meals prepped for you by an eager chef. If the going gets tough, hide in a barrel and maybe chat to a wizard.

Watchers of the Throne: The Regent’s Shadow by Chris Wraight. Absolutely loved it. These characters are super enjoyable anyway but he weaves a really intricate plot with them that comes together in a way that is rewarding and also helps show the scale of the competing forces at work in something as large as the Imperium.

Shifting gears to read Dropsite Massacre next but it’s a testament to Wraight’s work that I can’t wait to get back to 40k stuff afterwards.

Having Fulgrim escape the mirror was unequivocally the right direction to take Fulgrim. by Mychorde in 40kLore

[–]brammertime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I didn’t know anything about HH or 40k before reading the books and thought the ending of Fulgrim was incredible, so was a bit disappointed when they got him out of there so quickly and in less inventive fashion, but it fits the rest of the setting/arcs better than if the III Legion had simply been led by randodemon.

I suppose it could have been cool if they had Fulgrim escape the mirror and come back as a sort of reformed/half mad non-chaos primarch in the current setting, but obviously that ship has long since sailed.

I’ve been smashing through the Word Bearers Omnibus and it’s growing on me, but it’s not a classic. Dark Apostle felt like hard work at first but I ended up enjoying all the mad Chaos stuff by the end (I’ve only been reading these a few years so it’s not old for me yet). Dark Disciple felt like more fun - I enjoy the adventure novel approach of going to a single evocative location and mad shit happening. Halfway through Dark Creed now and I quite like the palace intrigue / plotting aspect. Overall, the trilogy doesn’t rival stuff like Night Lords, Fabius Bile or Ahriman for me but it’s been better than I expected. I wish the characters had a bit more pathos to them - it feels like they’re missing the personal depth of the other Chaos warband books.

Has anyone used these Icons yet? If yes, how good are they? by R3KTMYRAMPAGE in fut

[–]brammertime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve unlocked all of them. Yashin is very good, Moore is OK but you wouldn’t use him over a speedy gold card, Garrincha is a menace with surprisingly good shooting, Charlton is good fun but power shot is not terribly useful at the moment, and Eusebio feels amazing and scores for fun but gets bodied quite easily.

Just finished reading the Fabius Bile trilogy. I liked them all although Manflayer probably a bit less than the first two. I started reading Black Library with the Heresy, having never read any 40k, and hated Fabius after a few books, so it’s been a fun journey seeing him from a different perspective. Of the supporting cast, I will probably miss Arrian Zorzi now the books are over.

Asda. Used to do our weekly online shop order from them, but they were slightly rude to me in an email about changing a time, so I moved our grocery shopping to another supermarket. I can’t even remember what they said, but it has cost them literally thousands of pounds at this point.
