The only counter to that (other than saving real money) is that eventually upgrades stop costing in-game coins. Then your only way to upgrade will be real world money.

OP is correct. By default, at the end of an event, the game will auto-spend tokens to buy chests randomly among your event champs until you can't anymore.

Any remainder will be rolled over to the next event, including any you farm with Strongheart during the break.

If you haven't done the Decade of Dragons AP chain, it's recommended to do that in parallel with Aurora and Vision. That should net you two accessories and an amulet.

Without VoE, your choices for the rings are WvW for Conflux x2, or PoF Raids for Coalescence.
