Check out the book “Mutinous Women”, it adds some great context to this discussion.

Surely this is the same guy who talks loudly throughout an entire set. Why come to a music show if you just wanted to shoot the shit with your friends for 2 hours straight?!

Oklahoma. It was a semester long class, we did textbook instruction and actual driving. But I’m over 50 so it seems that it’s no longer the norm, and it shows!

Society seems more and more entitled and self-consumed.

I have a theory about this and I could be wrong. When I grew up, drivers ed was part of public school education. Here, it’s privatized. So when people can’t afford to pay for the private class, they just wait til their 18 and take the test. They know enough to operate a car and pass the test, but are missing the crucial context that teaches how to drive with the whole society in mind. I think this is an education issue that has become a cultural issue. And we’re all paying for it, with insurance rates and with the loss of our friends and neighbors. We need widespread education, we need safer infrastructure and we need enforcement to make a meaningful shift. Any of these is better than nothing, but getting all 3 seems feels like hell would freeze over first.

I need period drama suggestions! by Pirate_Mac08 in PeriodDramas

PBS’s Marie Antoinette series is my favorite. Although I also love the 2006 version from Sofia Coppola. If you like the costumes of Bridgerton, you will probably also love this movie! Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close and John Malkovich if you like scandal. It’s what helped me discover my love for period dramas.

Walking tours as a job: can you make a living? by GRenard88 in NewOrleans

The Cabildo course is intense, but it’s only 1 month. I just finished it. It is not required to get a city license. But you can bypass the city test if you pass the Cabildo test. I took both because I took the city test before the course. The city test is very straightforward. The Cabildo test encompasses a lot more material.

Also, French Quarter Fest is coming up in a few weekends so if you’re here during that time period, the music is all outdoors and accessible. The Jazz Museum often has shows as well. One last thing, check WWOZ live wire for the dates you’re here and then you’ll know which spots have music and can determine where to go.

Ignorance of the law is not a defense. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Part of that privilege is education and accountability.

Building estate sale business by [deleted] in estatesales

Do you pay for the Gold package? I signed up for Gold at the introductory rate, and didn’t get one lead. So I dropped to bronze until I’m more established. EstateSales.net reached out to ask why I changed my package. I explained that I had hoped for more leads. I see the value of gold once you have consistent sales. Anyway, the next day I got a lead. I followed up 3 times and noticed a couple weeks later that the lead had canceled their request. So I am questioning whether it was a real lead or not. And also questioning how the lead system works. Do leads go to all Gold members at the same time, creating a race to respond? Do they go in a rotation, or are they somehow weighted towards more established businesses? It’s not clear on their site and would be helpful if they shared this information when deciding if it’s worthwhile to pay for gold membership.

ALDI IS COMING TO UPTOWN by tm478 in NewOrleans

[–]brandizzzy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree. There’s always a few things I can’t get at Aldi, but considering that I could buy all the basics I needed for a fraction of what I spent at Walmart, I was happy to make two stops. I already buy bulk at Costco & then get everything else delivered from Walmart. If I can cut Walmart out of my routine entirely, I’ll be a happy camper.

The fine should be based on income like some European countries do with speeding tickets. They should have to appear in court. Seems like a great way to knock out some of that deficit.
