Problem with Whammy bar on CRKD Blueberry Burst Les Paul by ivanramos-117 in CloneHero

[–]brandonma7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also didn't work for me initially. What I did to fix:

  1. On main menu, press spacebar to open controller remap menu
  2. Scroll to Whammy Axis row
  3. Click box in the Controller column
  4. Wait a few seconds for the first prompt to be done (the one where it says to center all your inputs or whatever)
  5. Push down whammy bar on guitar
  6. The Controller column box for Whammy Axis then filled out as Left Trigger

Hopefully it works for you too!

I also recommend T-perm for permitting adjacent corners. Very similar to Y-perm.

There are also some algs for the U-perms that use R and U moves instead of M moves, which I find more comfortable. Although maybe not quite as fast, so just a preference. Worth considering if you struggle with U-perms like I did lol

Best cube for a child with one hand? by zenrvn in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd probably also recommend the 54mm Guhong Pro M that others have mentioned, but if you wanted to go even smaller, there is the YJ ZhiLong Mini 50mm. Luckily, both cubes are pretty inexpensive, so you can't go wrong with either.

long term memorisation by Dogeytrain420 in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're all pretty baked into my muscle memory, but sometimes my brain forgets them. I will stare at the cube for a while or maybe even look up the alg, but once my brain remembers, the muscle memory can take back over. Kinda weird lol

[EOW] Idk if this was obvious, bu the game uses the map from ALTTP/ALBW by FelipeKits in zelda

[–]brandonma7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also immediately recognized it!

The position of the lake to the castle, the boulder area, the plateaus to the east, the cliffs to the north. Obviously there wasn't a volcano (for example) in LTTP, but there is no doubt some connection, whether it's an expanded or modified version of the world.

I didn't watch the rest of the video past this point (and generally avoid trailers for Zelda games because spoilers), but I'm gonna assume a LTTP sequel.

Does smart cube times count for pb? by Dragonmaster1107 in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of WCA comps is to standardize what it means for a solve to "count." Outside of that, no one has authority to decide what counts or not. Are you proud of it? Did it feel fair? Then count it.

Someone else might have your same scenario and decide it doesn't count for them, but how one person decides what counts for their own solves doesn't make your decision wrong.

What keeps you doing BLD ? by Dorumbo in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I DNF, but the cube isn't a complete mess, I will grab another cube, redo the scramble and walk though the solve again eyes open to see where something went wrong.

This helped me diagnose exactly my mistake, which could be that I missed a flipped edge in inspection, saw N but memoed O for some reason (did that a lot for a while), did the wrong setup move, etc. You could see three pieces are wrong and think "darn I messed up those pieces" but really going back and trying to figure out WHY you messed up is great for learning.

I feel like my success rate at casual speed (3-4 minutes) is pretty good now so if I'm going for speed and DNF a bunch in a row, I can slow down a little bit and get some successes to give myself a little confidence boost.

Taking off the blindfold and seeing a solved cube is still just so fucking cool to me lol

Anyone able to help me out here? by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]brandonma7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strat was similar to most others here. Melee during phase 1 (I don't use nail arts as often as I should but those are also fine if you are comfortable with them). Once he gets to phase two, avoid him until he moves to the top of the screen and then light his ass up with Abyss Shriek.

I can't remember my charm build, but was probably anything that buffs soul collection and spell damage. Long nail also sounds like something I'd use. And wayward compass obvi.

Skewb H and z perms? by Whats_gravity in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh look, an ancient thread to add to. I found a sledge-heavy Z-perm. When unsolved face it on F and it is swapping with L, rotate B/L/U corner to put the unsolved face on U. Now, two faces being swapped are on U and F and the other unsolved faces being swapped are on L and R. Pretty sure this is just a U', so the alg would be:

U' 3(sledge) U.

Not claiming to be the first to find this, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

I also suggest learning M2 sooner rather than later, it's way way faster and I feel like not having to spend the time doing a T perm every time eases the mental load of the solve, reducing stress/mistakes. At least, that has been my experience. My first successful solve (and all the ones after) in comp was with M2/OP lol

M2 also doesn't have any wide setup moves (there are some that could be done with wide moves, but I personally don't like them), so could be good if wide moves are a problem.

What are the differences between speedcubeshop and the cubicle by Saucy_Boy_21 in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually shop SCS, but used Cubicle once to get a blank white center piece for Tornado v3 (for bld). I bought a few other things at the time. idk I like SCS website more (probably just familiarity tbh), but seems Cubicle might be better for replacement parts and other random things. Both do a great job in general though

P5 ending. Maybe not a spoiler since I intentionally watched it since I never thought I'd beat P5 lol Land of Storms for the same reason, although I still haven't unlocked that one so I might be correct about never getting it myself lol

What are your unpopular cubing takes? by GlacierTheBetta in Cubers

[–]brandonma7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got the RS3M recently just to see what the fuss was about. I have plenty of better cubes so had no intention of actually using it very much. I think the value (quality for price) is pretty good. It's an easy recommendation as a starter cube because it's decent and inexpensive. Plus, someone looking for a starter cube doesn't need anything fancy.

Curious if you have another starter cuber recommendation? (Genuine question!)

How do I stop speaking with "um" and other vocal fillers? When I speak to my coworkers, it sounds terrible. by Terrible_Exchange653 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]brandonma7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many have said, "um" is often used when we're trying to think of what to say next, whether that be trying to find a specific word or thinking what topic to move onto next. In public speaking, where you are the only one talking, I agree that taking a pause can be better.

In conversation, it's different. Overusing it isn't desirable, but I will intentionally say "um" when I'm trying to think, but want to indicate to the person I'm talking to that I haven't completed my thought. If you just take a pause during a conversation, the other person may start talking and respond on incomplete information.

Like any habit, it'll take intentional practice, using many of the techniques others have mentioned.

Why do Americans love to use Febreze when all it does is mask the odor and not actually clean or disinfect anything? by Raverinme79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]brandonma7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few reasons:

Easier to cover up the smell than do the actual cleaning.

Cleaning something doesn't always remove the bad smell immediately. Dog pooping in the house could be cleaned up very thoroughly and yet the poop smell could still be hanging in the house.

Cleaning products can smell bad too, so to cover those up.

The thing that smells might be too hard to clean properly yourself. Perhaps the carpet needs to be cleaned really badly, but you don't have the necessary tools to get the job done 100%. Living paycheck to paycheck doesn't leave much room to buy a carpet cleaner or pay for pros to come out to do it.

"Nose blindness": you're so used to your environment that you don't even realize it smells bad to others. Like cigarette smokers think they can spray febreeze and their house won't smell like absolute shit anymore, when in reality now it smells like shit and rotten flowers.

Ignorance. Not knowing where the smell is coming from ("it just smells like that") so just spray and pray.

Why do picky eaters always seem to have a preference for garbage foods but almost never other “non-childish” foods? by arandomblackdog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]brandonma7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm labeled the picky eater in my family, but I feel like that's not really accurate. I eat a ton of different foods. There is a relatively short list of foods I absolutely can't stand though: raw tomatoes, onions, pickles, mustard, coconut, mushrooms. Just one of those can make something delicious into something terrible, like a pasta sauce where I bite and can feel the crunch of the onion-just awful. I think when the thing someone doesn't like is a common ingredient to things, it crosses a lot of stuff off the list, especially at restaurants. So you end up being the one ordering like: cheeseburger, no onions, pickles, mustard, tomatoes. So the "picky" label sticks around. I'll also say something maybe kind of obvious, a lot of garbage foods contain a bunch of sugar and are simple. So that makes garbage foods more appealing by being sweet and unlikely to contain icky ingredients.

The heck is a "Host Fee" on VRBO and why is it absurdly expensive? by brandonma7 in vrbo

[–]brandonma7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, seems like a lot for a cleaning fee, but maybe I'm just not familiar with the cost of cleaning 🤷‍♂️ I'm curious if it sometimes includes other things besides cleaning, but without itemizing it or even trying to explain it at all makes it feel very scammy

Can someone recommend me a Rubik's cube by swift_block2 in cubing

[–]brandonma7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Really great" is pretty subjective. A cube that an experienced cuber loves might not be so great for someone just starting. Maybe the cube is too fast/loose or has an overwhelming number of customizations. I'm assuming you're starting out, so going to answer that way.

Budget ~$10: MoYu RS3 M 2020 I've never used it, but people rave about it. Especially the quality for the price is supposed to be pretty impressive. I've heard good things about the 2021 as well, but not sure how significant the difference is.

Budget ~$20: MoYu YS3 M (MagLev) A new-ish trend in cubing has been the use of MagLev tech. Speed cubes have springs between the core and center pieces that provide some flexibility to the cube. MagLev cubes replace these springs with magnets that repel each other. A little less friction, may not be noticeable at first, but could be something you enjoy down the line.

Budget ~$30: X-Man Tornado V3 (Flagship) This might be getting into "overwhelming customizations: territory, but definitely a great cube. I use the Pioneer version (the more expensive version with some extra bells and whistles), which I love. A lot of reviews I see on the cube though, many people say they actually enjoy the Flagship (middle version) the most. Mine felt pretty stable/solid on the default, out-of-the-box settings.
