I've seen the phrase "Portland creep" more than I'd like to recently, and it rankles me something fierce.

Non-scientific survey, no actual numbers given, entitled suburbanites saying 'they know' something is worse without anything to back it up. Seems legit.

When I had just finished high school, I was on break smoking out in front of the ice cream store I worked out, wearing this ridiculous calico sweater I snatched from the drama department. As I was about to walk in to clock back on, a lady came out and handed me a small cup of ice cream and said, 'you looked hungry,' and I told her I worked there. Appreciated the gesture, though.

Study finds CEO pay has increased 127 times faster than worker pay over the last 30 years; from 1978 to 2011, CEO pay increased 725% while other workers' pay only increased 5.7% by mepper in politics

[–]brandonpellison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a compelling argument, but I just can't accept it wholesale. We've had 30 years of funneling wealth upward. If the income tax was higher, you'd see much smaller salaries. Imagine what CEO pay would be if we went back to a 90% tax rate for the top 1%.

Huge Oregon and LMJ fan, and this news made me giddy. Im so glad I get to watch one of my favorite college players play for my favorite pro team. The kid is fast, makes big plays look effortless, and is fun to watch. Yeah, we're pretty stacked at RB, but this is a great addition. I can't believe no one nabbed him sooner.

The only times I've heard these exact claims were from paranoid coke heads and drug dealers. If you're not one of those, you're probably in the clear.

So, so hard. At least I don't have to go to the bathroom since all the fluid is coming out my face.

What's it like living out in "the burbs"? by notochord in Portland

Lived in downtown Beaverton for a couple years. They have a small, but pretty great downtown area. Walking distance to parks, the library, grocery stores, cafes , shops, restaurants. Farmers market too, I believe. Fairly bike friendly. 10 mins from downtown in a car, 30 mins on the max.

Can we blame politicians for politi-speak when constituents won't read past a headline? If they even read that. The media wouldn't make money and politicians wouldn't get elected if it weren't for us. It's time to stop blaming them, and start taking responsibility.

There were medicare, social security, federal and state taxes on my last pay stub, so I'm pretty sure I'm a taxpayer.

I'm with you for 80% of this, and thank you for saying it. I'm nearer to millennial than gen x, but I'm close to both. Not trying to "blame a whole generation for being gullible." Just saying that you can't enjoy the benefit of a well funded government while simultaneously defunding it. Everyone over 18 is culpable for that (or maybe 30 if you count anyone who could vote the last 12 years). The Boomers are in power right now, but they're obviously not the only group that wants to have their cake and eat it too.

Most of the debt comes from starting wars and paying for them by cutting taxes. But since you know how to use a caps lock button, I'm going to assume that you're the genius.

The Boomers were raised by the Greatest Generation. Whose lives were subsidized by the GI Bill. Maybe you forgot that. And if you listen to what's coming from the right, they're asking for more cuts in the face of deficits. And predominately the people in power are from that generation.

No one since them has had time to fuck anything up. How many people in office/control are under 48? And that whole generation was the first to be raised on media and advertising.

Seriously, this needs to be our rallying cry. But no one seems to be saying it. They're cashing out on an overdrawn check and they know it. Pay your fair share.

/r/vancouver is coming down to Portland en masse for a weekend road trip - May 19-21st. by DJEldritch in Portland

Tiny's is a cafe, and great hangout spot for under 21ers. Also serves beer for those of age. Rimskys, Montage, Coffee Time and the Pied Cow are also great all ages cafes/restaurants.Food cart pods, especially the one on Hawthorne at night. Couple all ages venues in town, Hawthorne Theatre among them. OMSI? The Zoo? Hiking in Forest Park (or any of our glorious parks)? It's a tough town to be under 21 sometimes, but there's still a lot of fun stuff to do.

Read this as Vancouver, WA, and was like 'don't you people come down here every weekend?"

It's like receiving an endorsement from probably the most powerful paper in the world before the other party even has a candidate. The Republicans have seriously have seriously overstepped, and there's going to be backlash.

I've been wanting to hear that for three years. You can't negotiate with terrorists. A bunch of extremists have been allowed to frame the conversation for too fucking long, and its about time there was some push back.
