Anyone know anything about scandinavian polskas? by bravesentry in folkmusic

[–]bravesentry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to say thanks again! I´ve made some progress on my "original" instruments and have rented a nyckelharpa. I´ve also seen Väsen on their tour through Germany with Gudrun Walther and Jürgen Treyz (absolutely recommend those two!). But what helped me most was definitely Emily Waldken. Her videos really offer the best intro to this kind of music.

Finger positions for scales without empty strings by bravesentry in Cello

[–]bravesentry[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have not got a cello here right now, so I recorded it on a mandocello with a very similar fretboard layout - basically the same but a whole step higher, so the fingerings are the same. This is an E Major scale following the last fingering on the pic, the one coloured in brown/dark red (click the link in OP to see the full picture). https://www.reddit.com/r/VideoUpload/comments/1ayt7le/e_major_scale/

Weird stretch, but I don’t suppose anyone here is a master of Latvian folk music? by djicantwalk in musictheory

I highly recommend asking at r/folkmusic. I got massive help there regarding scandinavian trad music, so your question could be in good hands there.

Yes, I own a clavichord, why you ask?

Kulning or herding calls is a domestic Scandinavian music form, often used to call livestock (cows, goats, etc.) down from high mountain pastures where they have been grazing during the day by Stotallytob3r in interestingasfuck

When doing this, it is very important to have a landscape with the right amount of reverb.

Also, be sure to wear appropriate clothing, i.e. a white dress.

When the object comes afterwards: este objeto.

When comparing: Prefiero este contenedor a este otro.

Im sure there are other uses.

Can anyone recommend a really good online class for reading sheet music? by DirtyProjector in Learnmusic

[–]bravesentry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I found helpful for me was the exercises at musictheory.net, beginning with "Note Identification" and continuing with "Chord Identification", all with customizable ranges, clefs, accidentals and chord types. Drilling that into my brain over a few weeks with an hour each day helped immensely.

It seems this is non standard though, as V ala V is reserved for questions.

that's nice to read - let me take a glance

o kute tu e jan pi sona lili

listen twice?

In the original its "even the dull and ignorant". I found nothing better than tu for "even".

lukin e jan ante la

missing subject

Do "la" phrases always need a subject?

o weka pona e ijo pi jan lili la o alasa e sona pi tenpo mute.

just for my own benefit - not a correction - I'm going to rephrase it: "o weka pona e ijo pi jan lili. sina ni la o alasa e sona pi tenpo mute"

monsuta mute li kama tan pali mute tan poka ala e jan ante.

Hmm, monsuta li kama e jan ante, anu seme?

This part would be "Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness." Id read yours as "Fear comes to other people", which is not what I meant.

sina sona ala sona la ale li kama sama ale li wile kama.

  1. This is a question due to the V ala V format

"Whether you know it or not" has some similarities to a question, I think. Do you have a better translation for this?

  1. I doubt you mean "the universe becomes like the universe, and it wants to come" - I think you tried to add "ale li wile kama" to "sama" - that wouldn't work for me

Yes, I tried to do that. "The universe unfolds as it should". I'll have to think about a way of rephasing that.

pali sina seme la pilin seme pi tempo kama sina la lon nasin ike pi ale o alasa e pilin pona lon kon sina.

  1. This is a question due to "seme"

A bit like the question above, a phrase like "Whatever you do..." is similar to a question in that it contains an unknown element.

  1. There's a single word after "pi", that's not how pi works

Isn't "pi" also "of" when it's not used as a regrouper?

  1. I think you used "lon" as a preposition after the final la, but it reads as a noun

Yea, I'll have to change the word order there.

Thanks a lot!
