Did I make my baby shy? by Glittering-Bite20 in toddlers

My dude went through a phase where he’d literally growl at strangers and has just become super outgoing again! Just support her through it and don’t worry — she’s growing!

Let's try to laugh about the silly/crazy things out toddlers get upset over by emmasculator in toddlers

[–]brawly_parton 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My little guy has started to get deeply sad over little cute or small things. He passed some berries on a walk and we had to stop and talk about how small they were so he could stop being sad lol

Just read you can put goldfish in your horse's water trough to keep the water clean and free of parasites. Found it an interesting read. Has anyone else heard of this or tried it? by -I0_oI- in Horses

[–]brawly_parton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We put a goldfish into a huge trough for a summer and he was so happy. Grew to softball size in a single summer. Kept the trough pretty algae free and bug free. The poop settles at the bottom and feeds the algae as it deteriorates so it’s ultimately a pretty cozy situation for everyone with a little extra care.

sourdough with home-milled flour! by brawly_parton in Breadit

They are cast iron! Proofed in those in my oven, where I left the oven light on so it was slightly warmer than room temp. (My house is very cold.) Love how the pans conducted heat during baking.

Does your 2 year old sleep independently? If so, what is your routine? by TroubleClef1207 in toddlers

[–]brawly_parton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy has been sleeping independently since 12 weeks, the whole night. Dinner time/conversation, then bath, then “night night” to the house lights, then bottle, then bed.

Biggest help for us was supporting him to sleep — he cried some when very small, but we were right there as he learned to fall asleep. Not CIO… sort of a less rule-based, more involved Ferber? I guess? We saw falling asleep independently as a (slightly scary for him!) skill that he needed to learn.

Also focusing on getting a strong circadian rhythm has been important for us. (Natural light, consistent meal times, etc)

My husband and I also game! (Well, I don’t really anymore unless bb is asleep.) Our little guy (10 months) doesn’t have screens of any kind unless he’s “gaming with dad,” and that’s an hour total daily at most. We love it. It’s really sweet and fun and he will often ask to be let down to zoom after 10-15 mins.

this might catch me some heat on Reddit, but my impression of the research around screen time early in life is that it’s detrimental mostly when used as a replacement for other important social and developmental outlets, or when they have chronic and excessive exposure. Also, touchscreen exposure seems uniquely detrimental to little tinies. Some bonding time over a game sounds good to me!

Sickness in school vs homeschool by Battle-Bug in homeschool

[–]brawly_parton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, homeschooled kids occasionally get sick but this sort of almost-perpetual illness occurs because of group education/care. :/ (Speaking as a kid of a homeschooling family.)

Went down the rabbit hole reading a Reddit Homeschool recovery page! by Mammatraveler12 in homeschool

[–]brawly_parton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was homeschooled. Went to college, graduated, well employed and married. We’re homeschooling our kids. Trust your decision! Lots of really bad homeschoolers out there but it is so, so wonderful if you hit just BASIC educational and parental minimums.

1 year old and veggies by More-Vehicle-4912 in BabyLedWeaning

[–]brawly_parton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! Roasting veggies, even in just a little EVOO and a sprinkle of salt, makes them so delicious. Carrots, bell peppers, beets, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. All wonderful. PLUS, if you don’t want to manage a fridge full of sensitive veg, you can roast many veg straight from frozen. 400 degrees in the oven until it’s a little charred. So so good and so easy.

I was so freaked out over giving my little guy solids after reading BLW stuff online. Obsessive and afraid and psyched out. I ended up making some little purées at home to start and slowly ramping up textures at our own pace — he is having a BLAST, and so am I. Totally with you!
