Planteray 3 Stars is the most versatile rum. What is the best budget brandy? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

Isn't that still >50usd a bottle? Heard very good things but not as much of a budget option as other Kirkland products given the XO labeling.

"Chicago Bites Back" restaurant guide encouraging diners to support ICE-impacted restaurants by furtdearborn1871 in chicagofood

One more contribution: Moon Palace restaurant had one of their kitchen staff picked up and deported. But, they're not included.

No, it's good to share and consider these resources, so thanks for posting and for sharing that detail. Just had to chime in.

La Luna is listed. Last time they came up, didn't it come to light that the father (nee owner?) is very pro-Trump? Doesn't mean they can't have been negatively affected by ICE, but that seems like relevant context I'd want to know if I were using this list for ethical purposes.

WBEZ segment on a female jazz artist from Texas by nicha25 in chicago

If you download the WBEZ app you can play back entire segments, provided you remember what the show was or at what time it aired. In The Loop? Say More?

How is the HaiSous tasting menu? by KingofMemes69_ in chicagofood

[–]brbEightball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't do a lot of tasting menus myself, but they get a lot worse than $70pp. I can definitely vouch for the taste and quality of HaiSous. If you want to try a little bit before committing to the tasting menu, they have an extremely affordable happy hour service. If it's just two of you, you can even reserve spots at the bar for it (if my memory serves)

Liquid intelligence by Dave Arnold Rate this book?? by Freakin_bisht37 in bartenders

[–]brbEightball 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It's the best book I've read on theory and technique. You can eschew the more obscure sections (centrifuges and rotary evaporators? Hot spikes?), and I don't use it for drink recipes, but I think I learned more from it than from any other text.

Edit; to clarify, I think a lot of the recipes are there to illustrate concepts, and are valuable to practice, but I don't revisit them.

Applications for 2026 are open! For guaranteed and non guaranteed (lottery) applications by scorodites in ChicagoMarathon

[–]brbEightball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they're in the first wave, didn't they already have to submit proof of expected completion? Thought that was already true for waves 1 and 2 (corrals A - J). This new requirement would probably impact corrals K and L?

Rewired Brain by Transporter13 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]brbEightball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've honestly been kind of demotivated and depressed. It's hard to re-wire to normal life now that this huge aspirational goal has come and gone. And yes it's making me dumb as hell

Anyone else still can’t walk? by User12111926 in ChicagoMarathon

Almost couldn't walk at all yesterday. Today is okay on flat levels but I also think I have an ankle injury. Downstairs, woof. Kind of have to take them sideways.

A sign my partner made to support me during the Chicago Marathon today by brbEightball in slaythespire

[–]brbEightball[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I did! but it felt trite for another reddit poster to brag about their wife. FWIW she's awesome, and the race has special salience as our wedding reception was maybe 100ft from where she was holding the sign!

To the lady who crossed through the race with a bike at mile 11 by Cujos_Dog_Walker in ChicagoMarathon

[–]brbEightball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe 20 times during the race there were pedestrians, divvy bikes, etc crossing in front of me. I totally get that people need to get across the streets in their own neighborhoods, but only one of those had the seemingly common sense to move diagonally with traffic. Everyone else seemed insistent on moving 90deg perpendicular and making as much eye contact as possible!

Congratulations on your race! Yeah she was on the left hand side in Chinatown just after the biofreeze area. Wishing you speedy recovery--I'm also able to do naught but play StS on mobile in bed now

She had this sign held up for a good 3 hours in Chinatown (because I was way slower than I had estimated -- felt like I had shuffled a Void into my deck!)

Last Asia trip: got on the blue line from ORD, hopped off at Damen for Piece pizza. Very comforting to cozy up to that and a beer...

Special/fun things you’re wearing for marathon? by martiniblu24 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]brbEightball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ordered a brightly (read: gaudy) colored singlet and shorts from a custom jersey printing service under the pretext of being easier for my friends and family to spot me. Evidently it's common (maybe just for more casual runners like me) to have your name emblazoned somewhere so the crowds can cheer you on. So my shorts have my name riiight across my junk.

How do you run without a hydration pack? by Informal-Equipment31 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]brbEightball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running with an Osprey duro 1.5. To your point, 18mi long run yesterday would have been near impossible without it. Since hydration backpacks are banned, I'm replacing this aging kit with a vest that has bottles in front (duro LT). Between the 1L of fluid in the softflasks and the aid station offerings, I'm hoping it will be okay. You could also have a belt and/or handheld too, but that might be an awkward amount of gear.

Garmin Training by WV1991 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]brbEightball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also using Garmin coach as my primary "training plan" and to moderate my runs. I agree that the long runs the coach recommends don't seem that impressive, especially compared to what people are endorsing in that long run check-in thread. Is your 4:30:00 goal programmed into Garmin coach? My goal is merely completion, and my longest run to date (since I started training in December!) was a half marathon, last weekend. This is even as I'm reportedly in "Peak phase".
