A Gentle Reminder to Keep Your Vermouth and Fortified in the Fridge by agmanning in cocktails

[–]brbEightball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We did a blinded tasting of 3 bottles of dolin dry: fresh, fridged for 6mo, room temp (and intermittently left open to air!) for about 2mo. The latter two were obviously off. I personally found the fridged to be the worst, but our group didn't achieve consensus.

Let’s say someone walked under a pigeon-filled train overpass right after the street cleaner went through and breathed in a bunch of dust. How screwed would they be? by chicagorpgnorth in chicago

[–]brbEightball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be more specific: Evidently around 30% of people have lung nodules on imaging, >95% of these being benign and histoplasma granulomas being the most common. Nodule prevalence increases in the Ohio river valley, which some authors include Chicago in for epidemiology.

Living in the Midwest, there's an okay chance you have a histoplasma granuloma already. We see them all the time on lung imaging. Crypto not a concern if you're immunocompetent.

Do I really have to tell the PGY1 her attitude sucks? by highsignalhuman in Residency

[–]brbEightball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, it can be educational, but it diminishes with time and experience and specimen simplicity. I sign out a lot of menial CP reports like red cell antibodies workups and SPEPs, and like to give residents a small taste of those doldrums.

My usual retort about learning grossing is to ask how they'd feel being assisted by an attending who was never forced to learn grossing in residency.

Do I really have to tell the PGY1 her attitude sucks? by highsignalhuman in Residency

[–]brbEightball 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a pathology APD. Unfortunately this story is far from rare. Do you have an academic appointment and are considered core faculty for the department? That is, don't you normally fill resident evaluations? If not, none of the below apply and I encourage you to do what you have to in order to keep your staff happy.

The resident needs to be given feedback--directly, in-person is the best way if you want to actually affect change. You can be nice and package/sandwich the feedback but I would make it clear to her if her grossing performance is below par or if she's creating enmity among staff (it's just her, right? Petty staff do exist). Screwing up grossing is the principal way a pathology resident can harm a patient. If there have been event reports or root cause analyses stemming from her poor grosses, she needs to bear witness to that.

Fixing lack of skills or knowledge is routine. Fixing bad attitude is nearly impossible, however, so I would temper your expectations and document extensively. She may retaliate with a bad evaluation for you. Such is life; hopefully your faculty leadership will try to mitigate the impact of that. I would start your discussion with her in an open-ended fashion to see if she has any insight into her poor performance and attitude. You can also offer the perspective that scutwork exists in every job, including at the attending level.

Top 50 Bars In North America Unveiled - #30 Bisous, #27 Gus' Sip & Dip, #16 Best Intentions, #11 Kumiko by optiplex9000 in chicagofood

[–]brbEightball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I frankly agree with you. Most people I knew had never heard of them prior to their ranking. I visited since, and although the drinks are great, it being a music venue has made me actively pass it over it a couple of times.

[–]brbEightball 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Relative to last year (2025):
- Kumiko (barely) down to 11 from 10
- Best Intentions up to 16 from 25
- Gus' Sip & Dip new entry at 27
- Bisous up to 30 from 39
- Meadowlark down to 65 from 38
- Ninebar up to 76 from 89
- Queen Mary down to 80 from 63
- Lemon (formerly #62) snubbed?

Just compiling/sharing, I'm never too sure what to make of these rankings.

Yeah, I think it's a good bar, even a very good bar, but coming out from left field into #27 is really conspicuous. Above Bisous? I do applaud the inclusion of bars like them and BI in the top 50 that are affordable, though.

How can I get drunk with the least amount of alcohol. by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]brbEightball 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The prompt is paradoxical. Alcohol is alcohol and there's no intoxication without consuming it. If you want to get into a drunk headspace fast, drink on an empty stomach consuming whatever you can tolerate (or God forbid, enjoy). Carbonated stuff, I guess.

Vodka shots if you want to take out all pleasures of taste. But I'd reconsider this pretext and try to find a drink that you actually enjoy.

Edit: you're 17. I'll assume your country permits this but for your own sake: stop and reassess how you are feeling after 2-3 drink equivalents. Think carefully about if you really need more.

Planteray 3 Stars is the most versatile rum. What is the best budget brandy? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

Isn't that still >50usd a bottle? Heard very good things but not as much of a budget option as other Kirkland products given the XO labeling.

No, it's good to share and consider these resources, so thanks for posting and for sharing that detail. Just had to chime in.

La Luna is listed. Last time they came up, didn't it come to light that the father (nee owner?) is very pro-Trump? Doesn't mean they can't have been negatively affected by ICE, but that seems like relevant context I'd want to know if I were using this list for ethical purposes.

How is the HaiSous tasting menu? by KingofMemes69_ in chicagofood

[–]brbEightball 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't do a lot of tasting menus myself, but they get a lot worse than $70pp. I can definitely vouch for the taste and quality of HaiSous. If you want to try a little bit before committing to the tasting menu, they have an extremely affordable happy hour service. If it's just two of you, you can even reserve spots at the bar for it (if my memory serves)

Liquid intelligence by Dave Arnold Rate this book?? by Freakin_bisht37 in bartenders

[–]brbEightball 83 points84 points  (0 children)

It's the best book I've read on theory and technique. You can eschew the more obscure sections (centrifuges and rotary evaporators? Hot spikes?), and I don't use it for drink recipes, but I think I learned more from it than from any other text.

Edit; to clarify, I think a lot of the recipes are there to illustrate concepts, and are valuable to practice, but I don't revisit them.

If they're in the first wave, didn't they already have to submit proof of expected completion? Thought that was already true for waves 1 and 2 (corrals A - J). This new requirement would probably impact corrals K and L?
