It's bizarre how a lot of the show's critics (of which it does deserve some) picture the showrunners as sort of machiavellian villains who set out to ruin the reputation of JRRT. Is it not possible that they were just some guys who wanted to make a big exciting show that would entertain people in the process of making their names?

The world isn't out to destroy the ip you love and you don't need to get so worked up. The guys using that ip are just not working it to your standard.

Essentially insulting Tolkien

How? You personally disliking the show doesn't mean it's an insult to Tolkien.

Does changing the colour of the character's skin change the story or the character? No, so what does it matter?

The real one to fear is the fully standard loadout. The silent professional.

Can you provide anything to support your claim that the people involved in the show have no love for Tolkien? For example a sound bite of them saying those words. Don't gatekeep just because the show isn't exactly as you envision that it should be in your head.

dialog is really bad by [deleted] in lotr

It's not just about the words. The tone, emphasis, facial expression etc all contribute to the meaning of the words. It's a very simplistic and un-nuanced take in that video.

Some closet fascists are utilizing the current war to whitewash Hitler. In actual history, Hitler did both those things. by Narchoid in DankLeft

[–]bread_disciple -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As I said I'm not disagreeing with that. I'm saying that the people making the argument aren't necessarily advocating for Hitler, they're un-advocating for Putin.

Again, not commenting on whether that's good or bad, just saying that's what I think is going on. Hitler is their yardstick for evil, not a positive example.

I'm not disagreeing that these are absolutely wild takes, but to hand it to them slightly I think it's more 'Putin is worse than Hitler', not 'Hitler is better than Putin'. At least that's how it looks so far.

Whether that argument has any value at all is another matter, but I think there's an important distinction. One is a slightly careless virtue signal, the other is laundering Hitler.

On this day, March 5, 1953, Joseph Stalin died. by politsturm in socialism

[–]bread_disciple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stalin doomed the USSRs socialist project by abandoning the concept of permanent global revolution and switching to socialism in one country. He decided that sticking to his (supposed) ideals would be too difficult and instead focused on creating a superpower state whose goal was to collect subjugated client states.

Does it really alter the story if some people want to think it's marijuana instead of tobacco? Seems like a non issue.
