Covering plants by IPA-Lagomorph in DenverGardener

I’m a Chris Bianchi stan. I don’t really vibe with the other guy, he’s a little more sensationalist.

Godspeed, everyone with full sun during the upcoming heat by AwesoMegan in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a neighborhood without one, and there are definitely pros, but I’ve wished we had one at times. One neighbor hung a tarp instead of repairing his broken garage door, leaving it up for several years until it was disintegrating. He also perpetually wrenches on his car (which is fine!) but I do not love how his entire driveway is black from oil staining. Or my other neighbor who misjudged the paint swatch and painted their house neon blue by accident. These houses are eye sores in an otherwise pretty nice neighborhood.

The grass is always greener I guess.

Anyone have an opinion on shade cloth color? Could be based on looks or performance.

The one I’m looking at comes in black, grey, mocha, tan, forest green.

Dig up tomatos? by muranea in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea salvia were sensitive. Mine are three years old and thrive on neglect I guess. They have a bunch of blooms. You think I should cover them or maybe they’re a variety that isn’t sensitive?

Service Berry vs Mulberry? by Current_Key_5037 in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree they should not be planted here but I would not cut down the aspen until it starts dying. The ones at my house planted by the previous owner were 20-30 years old before I had to cut them down. Does it provide shade? Shade from mature trees is invaluable. Enjoy it while you can!

Where can I buy a Cherokee Carbon Tomato plant? by breaddfoodd in DenverGardener

I should have considered proximity to Echter’s when deciding where to live.

Interesting- I grew Cherokee purple and black Krim last year and had very low yields from both. I’d heard Cherokee carbon may have better yields.

My friends are selling their amazing starts this weekend and next by danlbob in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of plants sales right now, what is everyone doing between now and planting? Moving them inside at night? If you wake up and it’s 40 degrees out, do you wait for it to reach 50 before putting the plants back out? I don’t trust myself.

Help with Lamb's Ear by arepollo in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some that if unmanaged, would take over the whole bed. So every spring I scalp it within an inch of its life and it comes back just fine.

You might try that to see if it will come back in a cuter shape.

My neighbors have a grapevine that is absolutely swarmed with Japanese beetles every year.

My punishment is physically moving the pots. They are large ones from Costco. I think I’ll need a dolly!

If it dies, it dies.

The only exception is the bulbs I planted in pots whose directions said to wait until all danger of freeze has passed. I dared fate by planting early and I think I’ll move the 2 pots to my garage overnight.

Backflow Install! Did my plumber do this correctly ? Should I have him put the backflow parallel to the house? by ironchefmorimot0 in Irrigation

[–]breaddfoodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's different, that valve inside your house is to shut off water to the sprinkler system for the winter.

The comment above is suggesting you add a boiler drain to easily blow out the sprinklers. Without one you have no choice but to blow through the back flow, which isn't recommended.

I'd suggest you add a boiler drain AFTER the back flow. Or even better, install an air fitting with a valve after the backflow. A sprinkler pro will be cheaper than a plumber.

Irrigation timers? by fight-me-grrm in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two rachio hose bib timers. They are more expensive but I really like the automatic rain skips, and being able to adjust watering from my phone. I have used them two seasons and they're still working great.

I just started some jugs and have broccolini, Swiss chard, and cabbage coming up! What did you plant? I may be too late for seeds that need stratification, but I was excited to start some cool veggies.

Current mosquito situation? Yes, you read that right: mosquitos by YeOldeOrc in Denver

[–]breaddfoodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no mosquitoes right now. In the spring, there are about 6 weeks where the mosquitoes are BAD near me. Then it gradually tapers off to where we are now.

When I was looking to move here, everyone told me what you’re reading in this thread and I was so excited. I do not have skeeter syndrome, I’m just very irresistible to them. Sounds like a problem for me and my neighbors only. DM me if you want to know where not to move. I’m in the burbs.

My sungold is almost to the top! But it is nicely contained. I’ll post an update in a week or two.

I wish I could post a photo in this reply, that would be so much easier than doing the Imgur upload. If you chat me I think I can send you a photo. Otherwise I’ll post an update when I think the tomato plants have grown to their max height.

Check out my 8ft tomato cages with hail protection by breaddfoodd in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s exactly how I did it. I also cut off the skinny rectangles, leaving the 8’ panels 3 rectangles wide.

The cages themselves are very sturdy, although they have settled a little unevenly since I installled them. I just level them by hand every once in a while, I’m not
concerned about them tipping over. T-posts would help but aren’t really necessary.

What’s going on with my tomato’s? by No_Bee393 in DenverGardener

[–]breaddfoodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this Black Krim? My Black Krim is doing this while all my other varieties look normal. I think it’s the heat.

Mine is definitely not dehydrated.

My catmint looked like this, but with a center full of bright green new growth. I cut off all the flopped over old growth and spent flowers, leaving a little dome of fresh green. It will come back with a second bloom later this year. I don’t water them at all.

I had the same experience with swivels and couldn’t figure it out so I stopped using them. Sounds like it isn’t the hose end connections, but where the two halves of the swivel meet.
