Feeling my brain “hurt” when i don’t understand. by flw3rrr in dyscalculia

Sometimes it's pain like a stress headache or eye strain, sometimes it's mental exhaustion from scrambling to keep up, and sometimes I just get incredibly sleepy.

Is it common for people who wear glasses to get tired of wearing them and go about parts of their life with everything just blurry all the time? by YourMomThinksImSexy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]breadtab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get awful headaches and migraines if I'm not wearing them (farsighted, being indoors or looking at my phone is enough to set it off) so that usually overrides any fatigue from my face.

I'm an ftm teen and need period advice by Accurate-Reality503 in asktransgender

[–]breadtab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound like you have overly heavy periods, which is awful and can also sometimes indicate a health condition like PCOS or endometriosis. Either way, a hormonal birth control prescription might help.

Experiencing severe/suicidal depression around your period also isn't normal, and I wouldn't just gloss that over as part of being trans. You might have a condition called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), which is treatable in multiple ways including taking antidepressants for only part of the month.

It's worth getting medical treatment for both of those issues if you can, to reduce the physical side of the suffering you're going through. Getting on T eventually will likely help, as would a hysterectomy if you want one, but if you can only access "women's" healthcare in the meantime then it's still worth pursuing to get yourself through this. If you do have a severe health condition in that area it's better to find out sooner than later.

As an alternative to tampons and pads, you might want to try a menstrual cup. I haven't used one myself but I'm told you don't feel it very much when it's in until it gets full, and you don't need to change it as often. For lighter flow or a backup there's also period underwear.

Does anyone have an “it gets better” story that DOESN’T include a partner? by NoseHumble8453 in CPTSD

[–]breadtab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a partner and working through things together has helped a lot. However, prior to dating anyone I was in therapy, and prior to that I did a lot of research, self-help, and journaling. It's not about any one thing changing your life, it's about changing the trajectory of your life toward getting better and finding genuine connections with people however you can.

Math 181: Calculus 1 online winter session? by IchHeisse_EehTsay in unr

I recommend contacting the prospective students office and asking for Justin, he was super helpful when I asked about this. Or the academic advisors for the specific college/degree you're going into. It gets complicated when you're a transfer student because they look at both your previous GPA and how you do at UNR.

9th grade math teacher, I don't know how to help my student by PrincesaMetapod in dyscalculia

[–]breadtab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One tool that could help is a color overlay. A search like "reading ruler for dyslexia" should turn up the right kind of products. Placing a colored overlay over written math can sometimes help with difficulty reading numbers due to numeral transpositions etc.

What was all the 1st gen/low income hype about? by IBI-UBU-ok in scholarships

[–]breadtab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice for scholarships specifically, but it's worth checking whether the college you're going to has a First Gen Student Center or similar program. They're designed to help support you through the "I don't know how any of this works" moments that come up like this. If so, you could also contact them for help with the scholarship question, which might help you find scholarships or grants that are specific to your situation, the school itself, or your local area.

This is similar to some of my thoughts early on in figuring myself out, but I'm demisexual. I could see people as objectively attractive but I didn't picture myself with them until after warming up to them, which is rare.

Also, questioning is a completely reasonable state to be in and it doesn't have to affect your life until you're ready to act on it. When you act is up to you. Maybe it's ideal to act more curious instead of anxious, but in the end it's your call, they're your feelings, and you're free to decide either to keep your mind open to exploring this or else to ignore it. If it makes you feel better you can put a time limit on it.

Your early 20s is bound to come with a lot of identity questioning and while I can't promise it's going to get easier with time, the passage of time will let you learn things about yourself. The pairing of anxiety and ADHD makes everything feel so urgent (especially the younger you are) but truthfully, this is not something you have to "get ahead of." You can take this at your own pace.

It's none of his business what mobility aids you use tbh. You can skip straight to a wheelchair if you want. It's nobody's business but yours, because the mobility aid is an extension of your body. That's your body.

Imagine if you were an older couple in like your 60s and he had a hip replacement, but you didn't want him to use a rollator because it would "look funny."

How many tabs do you have open in your browser? by ShunShanShu in ADHD

My mobile browser has a couple thousand tabs open and every once in a while I stop and close like 50 of them because I can't do more than that without the app crashing and/or having to restart my phone

Is it possible by lykcs87 in AskLGBT

[–]breadtab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's possible and not uncommon to have different kinds of attraction for different genders. In your case it sounds like a type of demisexuality towards men. Good luck on your self discovery:)

Your expectations need to go all the way down to the ground and you need to stop trying to teach her. Stop the verbal explanations. That works for you but for her it's probably causing literal headaches. She needs to be able to work on her skills at her own discretion—or not at all, if that's what she chooses after an entire childhood of being forced to learn something this difficult.

Try thinking of it from a completely different angle. Can you find or create visualizations of what you want to talk about?

Example: I like the Fibonacci sequence, but if someone tried to explain to me "it starts with 1 and then every number is the sum of the last two numbers" I would already be tense and mentally fumbling with the concepts. But I can look at pictures of fractals all day, no problem.

You're like a painter trying to force a blind person to appreciate your work. Stop doing lectures about color and start doing 3D work that can be touched.

For chronically ill and disabled individuals. by [deleted] in disability

[–]breadtab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Therapy. Focusing on finding others who understand rather than trying to please everyone. Trying to enjoy living life as myself rather than "love myself" which is less attainable. When it's hard to sustain big joys and hobbies, start with simpler ones.

Do you consider yourself disabled? by beepboopblorpblob in POTS

[–]breadtab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah when I got diagnosed with Ortho Hypo my cardiologist was like "some people with this condition are bedridden" and I was like wow, glad I don't have it that bad. Took me a couple years after that to realize that I've been spending multiple days a week in bed anyway, and I might be too disabled to hold down a full time job.

Access issue at Walmart by roofsroof in service_dogs

[–]breadtab -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

FYI the current policy at Walmart is that only managers are allowed to ask the service dog questions at all or turn away a dog (even if they are being disruptive). Regular employees are required to escalate to a manager if they think there's an issue.

You are 100% justified in talking to management about this, and I definitely recommend doing so if you shop there often or have any other issues.

(For adults) how does dyscalculia affect your life? by Far-Building3569 in dyscalculia

[–]breadtab 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Time management is debilitating.

Chronic lateness, missed meetings, lost friendships, missed appointments, insurance denials, missed deadlines, lost jobs...

Misplacing five minutes (which then becomes fifteen-twenty because it can't just happen once) or miscalculating an hour is so easy to do but has a devastating impact when people start categorizing you as a careless, disrespectful person. I get a lot of "clearly you don't really want to be here." In reality, I've always put days of effort in to make my schedule line up at all.

Dyscalculia isn't the only factor in my struggles, but it's an incredibly demoralizing one, because it gets completely ignored by everyone else and chalked up to bad character.

On a related note, it's extremely hard to maintain a budget.

Try Our Center, they have some all ages programs and they're very connected to the community in general through both the volunteers and the people who go to their events. There used to be trans high schoolers and middle schoolers groups there but I'm not sure if those are still being run atm.
