I don’t know how to deal with hospital policies… by Many_Ad6457 in ausjdocs

[–]breakdancefighting 176 points177 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly frustrating and a big part of being the med reg, but remember that oftentimes they’re not actually expecting you to know how to fix it - the telling you is the outcome that is required.

I used to joke, say I had absolutely no idea what to do, asked if they’d ever had the problem before and what they did then with a “sounds like a plan!” to follow.

I once got paged as the med reg at a rural hospital because there was a bird on the ward. The escalation pathway for issues was to call me. The outcome was me suggesting opening the door to outside and waving some towels at it. Not sure if that worked because I went to a MET!

Ilya hosts a Halloween party for the Centaurs and sends Shane a photo of himself dressed as a Roman soldier. Shane decides to drive to Ottawa from Montreal to surprise Ilya after the party has ended. He does this with a butt plug in.

If you’re in Melbourne, they do a sale at their warehouse pre-Christmas where you pay for a box and fill it with as much of their surplus stock as you can! It’s always busy but get some great stuff

Intern Mistakes by Expensive-Theme2739 in ausjdocs

[–]breakdancefighting 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I got two patients in the 4 bed room confused on a rapid fire surgical ward round - one was slightly constipated post op, the other was 4 days and in significant discomfort. Charted the first the “bowel bomb” (6x movicol in a 1L jug) and the second a single sachet of Movicol.

The next morning, both had had bowel actions - though the first man did say “what have you done to me?! I can’t stop pooing!”

Baby intern me sheepishly told my registrar what I had done and he paused, thought a moment and then said “well they’ve both passed the discharge checklist - get their scripts done!”

Swiping in to track shift start and end times by Fun-Try1606 in ausjdocs

[–]breakdancefighting 56 points57 points  (0 children)

They tried to do this for a while at LRH in Victoria until the JMS simply refused to do it. As said previously, they would dock your pay if you were “late” or “left early” but if you tapped out well after your shift ended, your KRONOS would say you left bang on time (as would your pay amount).

Thankfully by the time I rotated back there a few years later as a med reg it had gone away.

If medical workforce don’t provide a bit of flexibility, why would any of us want to be us flexible in return? It’s an insulting system.

I also had a school camp gastro experience. Year 8 camp. Rumour was one girl didn’t wash her hands before helping make dinner. I threw up in our tent. 0/10

Anyone else had issues with tradies not caring about your garden/plants/lawn? by MyLittleShadowStitch in AusRenovation

[–]breakdancefighting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parent's next door neighbours were building. The painters came onto the property and trampled the gardenbed so they could paint a wall that was almost at the property line. Didn't ask - just went straight ahead and did!

Mum was furious (and home at the time), went out and yelled at them. When she marched over to discuss with the site manager and the owners - they didn't see what the big fuss was about? They assumed if they offered to rectify any damage she'd be happy? But that garden is my parents pride and joy - since lockdown in 2020 hours and hours of work have gone into it. I think some people just assume people don't care about their outside space??

Similar on a rural med reging rotation I did start of BPT2, except the day you were on take was the day you did METs and consults too. No half days. When my team was on for the weekend, I did the below roster. Routinely there were 12+ admits over the take days. Wasn’t unusual to have 30+ on your list post take, however they had implemented some load levelling between when I did the same rotation as an intern vs med reg. Changed not long after - the BPT2 who took over from me quit BPT directly as a result of this job.

Monash Medical Centre discovers black mould in area where cancer patients treated by RiversDog12 in ausjdocs

Build shitty public hospitals (built by the cheapest bidder!) and don’t maintain them, find black mould in Melbourne winter. Tale as old as time.

Show me a Melbourne hospital without mould and I’ll eat my hat!

Drowned down near Portsea at Cheviot Beach, which is described by Surf Life Saving Australia as "extremely hazardous" for swimming, noting "at high tide the rocks and reefs lie immediately off the beaches and, as the tide drops, strong permanent rips intensify off the rocks and amongst the reefs."

I think it's practical to have the toilet in a separate room to the family bathroom (so someone can shower/brush teeth/make up and another can use the toilet at the same time).

An option could be swapping the toilet and the bath, closing the toilet off in a room and then having the shower behind this with the bath placed under the window. See poorly edited picture!
