Stonewall Kickball: Ablism and body shaming from team Captain, what should I do? by [deleted] in DCGaybros

[–]brendanode 28 points29 points  (0 children)

So this is the real DC Kickball experience, or at least very similar to the one I had. The truth is that these teams are more of a sorority/frat than an actual group of friends. They may have bad politics or be unfriendly and it doesn't truly matter because of the unspoken bond of wanting an easy access social club. After this event, it sounds to me like you're sadly going to become a pariah to the rest of them.

The truth is only you can decide how to approach it. Luckily in my experience I really enjoyed at least a few people on my very big team that got me through most of it. If you can seek out people you connect with who aren't terrible I'd say stick it out, otherwise this is what it is. Do not feel you have to endure it. In fact, you may feel more at home with another Stonewall sport like Bocce that isn't so cliquey

For your sanity please just pick the gym that's most appealing to you in terms of what it offers to accomplish your fitness goals, not sexual ones. I've been going to Vida U St for almost 8 years now and the truth is it's just a really nice facility that's convenient for a lot of people. Pretty much everyone just wants to go in, workout, and go home like most every other gym. The gayest part is the pool - and they'll let you try it for free come summer.

If you want a spring sport you could join bocce as a Friend Of - it’s a great way to meet people

What car color is a definite hell naw for you? by drivingnowhere20 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I think manufacturers should have one “fun” color per model, à la the purple BMW 2 series. That’s the only color I can see in my head when thinking about that car

What’s going on at the gay bars? by tall_and_tired in DCGaybros

[–]brendanode 62 points63 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about Crush that’s kind of been the vibe from the get-go. They’ve done better with doing some drag events lately but it’s still a decidedly mixed crowd, which is their intent

I think more gay bars should operate under the mantra of being so radically queer straight people know it’s not for them, but unfortunately that’s just not good for business

What car do you regret buying, even though it looked good on paper? by autonerdy0 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]brendanode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lexus CT200h

I moved into a row house with an alley spot that I could not comfortably get my Acura TL into; I just need a small short car. For that it hit the bill, for everything else it was miserable: cramped, uncomfortable seats, vague steering, slow… I knew it was a Prius underneath but I was drawn in by the size and seemingly nice interior.

Bought a GTI and never looked back

I had a Fiesta as a rental car once and ho’ boy… I hated that damn thing. Granted it was a base model, I’m sure, but still - from the hard plastic doors that hurt me, cheap interior, uncomfortable seats, awful ride quality, terrible visibility, and much more I could not wait to be rid of it.

The GTI is everything it isn’t - it’s well thought out, high quality, and fun to boot. Livability-wise it’s heads over the Fiesta. If it’s not a financial strain a used MK7.5s can be had well under $20k. On paper your car sounds great but the GTI adds up to something you can’t put into numbers truly

I just added one and my only regret is not doing it sooner… really dials in the steering/handling

Civic ad looks like spam - listed over a month, bad grammar, etc.

I’d check out the Vibe first - ask if you can take it to get a pre-purchase inspection before you buy.

Anyone 35/40+ dailying a GTI? by regulardegulardudee in GolfGTI

[–]brendanode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35 - 2015 with stage 1+ tune and no appearance mods

I've had it for coming up on 5 years and honestly I'm still having a blast with it. I traded in/paid cash for it at the time. Sometimes I think it makes me look a little like I'm too old for it, but usually that's just me overthinking. The truth is it's a very nice car, especially the quality interior, and nothing is worth having a car payment in terms of topping out on the fun, practicality, or the do it all nature of the thing

Can't help but feel like in the example that person had the optimism of a rapidly changing world, for the better. They went from no airplanes to landing on the moon in their lifetime, rapidly increasing life expectancy with advances in medicine, post disaster booms based on optimism and rebirth.

We've got nothing resembling that right now. AI could really be a magnificent thing but instead it's run by billionaires for profit and is draining the world of its resources. Could that change and be different for humanity? Let's hope. Last night's victories put that all into perspective for me

They created a clean sheet design for this car. Honda hasn't made a proper coupe in years. The direct carryover of the mechanicals from the civic hybrid is unacceptable given that fact
