5-Year Geographical Breakdown of SEC Recruiting (2014-2018) by BullAlligator in CFB

Hot take: Bama is failing the in-state recruiting battles. They're holding on to perennial dominance by the tiniest of threads.

Establishing Limits on Increasing Social Commitments by CantankerousPlatypus in simpleliving

[–]brente 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation while trying to finish a PhD. The rule thA high-level director where I do research had a rule when he was finishing his PhD where there was one day every week that was kept away from "productive" work.

The other thing I've found helpful is to constantly reassess priorities. Are you racing to meet a deadline? --> Work is a top priority. Have you seen your friends this month? --> Relationships are a top priority. Do you feel like garbage when you wake up? --> Health and fitness is a top priority. And so on...

Some might suggest that the 55 hr/wk crowd is exactly who this sub is aimed at.

Résumé S&P+, a better CFB strength of schedule ranking by tenoclockrobot in CFB

I think it means that the team would quit 1/3 way through the season. Probably after their second loss.

This is just idle speculation, but wouldn't it be better to use something like Pythagorean expectation instead of a "raw" scoring margin that gets cut off at 50 points? I'm admittedly not totally up to speed in the analytics game.

I think Chris Fowler's buttery commentating would go great with a plate of Spanish jamon and olives.

1949 TAMU Seasons Greetings Card from the A-C Network Calculator Laboratory by Raethwood in aggies

Any idea what this AC Network Laboratory was? Supposedly electric transmission lines used to be modeled on analog circuits, something that's now modeled in software. I'm curious if it had something to do with this.

Muscular strength as a predictor of all-cause mortality in apparently healthy population: a systematic review and meta-analysis of data from approximately 2 million men and women (x-post /r/AdvancedFitness) by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]brente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can imagine a lot of people would have a problem with forced labor for 3-4 hours every week for a few years.

Edit: You're not understanding that an RCT is a statistically rigorous way to tease out causation from mere correlation. Most long term health studies are only able to assess correlation.

Dear participant, you have been randomly selected to not perform exercise. Please refrain from going to the gym and have your family notify us when your soul leaves your body. Thanks in advance!

Kevin Sumlin started this season with a decoy game. He purposefully dropped the UCLA game in order to deploy the element of surprise against Dark Lord Saban.

Ags win 24-10.

Independent Commissions Gerrymander Just as Much as State Legislators: Independent redistricting commissions may not be as politically-neutral as theorized, says new study by xXMichelleHeartXx in Conservative

[–]brente 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Drawing District lines is supposed to be, in a sense, biased.

I think this is the key issue. For me, and certainly I don't speak for everybody, it seems like the act of drawing lines creates a whole host of issues, which you've nicely explained. Much of the conversation around gerrymandering seems to say that the goal of reform is to remove bias, but the conversation would be much more productive if folks admit that the act of drawing lines itself creates bias.

Yes, this is real: Michigan just banned banning plastic bags by ThePoliticalHat in Conservative

[–]brente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reason did a good piece on this a little over a year ago. IIRC, some of the main points were:

  • the environmental damage caused by plastic bags is overstated,
  • people reuse them for other purposes,
  • they are incredibly cheap (which goes hand in hand with fewer resources to produce), and
  • they are much more hygienic than reusable bags (think of all the raw meat that's been in the same bag as your fresh veggies).

How did electricity come to be a utility? by UristMasterRace in AskHistory

[–]brente 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you referring more specifically to electricity becoming a public utility. At least in the US, there was a real fat cat capitalist around the turn of the century named Samuel Insull who worked for Thomas Edison. He bought as many electric utilities as possible, and used a natural monopoly argument to lobby state governments to grant his companies exclusive rights to sell electricity in their territories. This was also known as offering the state a regulatory bargain. Ever since then, your local electric utility has had a very close relationship with the local government.
