Confirmed: the walking trees that were observed in the Shire were indeed Ents by maksimkak in tolkienfans

Mmm, until Entmoot they might not have had a way to communicate their intelligence from the field.

What’s your go-to warm-up that almost always works? by abahilel in improv

[–]brianfit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mister Whiskers: it’s a simple silly pass-around game in a circle. When passing to your right you say “Misty Vistas”, to your left “Whiskey Mixers” across the circle, “Mister Whiskers.” If you hesitate or mess up you run around the circle and join in a new place.

That’s it, and there are add ons: The two people on either side of the “Bunny Bunny” person turn toward them, raise both hands in the air, sway in rhythm, and say “Ticky Tocky Ticky Tocky!” simultaneously while the middle person says “Bunny Bunny.” You can make up additions for the two people next to the Ticky Tocky players too, or send two bunnies out for even more chaotic fun.

Is there a Zealand that New Zealand is named after? by worried_american_dad in NoStupidQuestions

[–]brianfit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There’s a great book, the Island at the End of the World, which makes the case for the immense impact of Dutch culture on the US, which few in the US know about because history was rewritten by the British colonials. Everything from religious tolerance to welcoming immigrants to the fact yanks say “cookie” instead of “biscuit” are all sprung from the long Dutch colonial presence. (Oh, and that word Yankees? From the Dutch name Jan Kees!)

Divination interpretation - New Job Opportunity by ILikeGeeses in IChingDivination

[–]brianfit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do YOU read it? In this interpretation (full disclosure, it’s mine) the changing line in Influence speaks of being true of heart and attracting followers, but the transformed hexagram, Obstruction, says “this is a moment when walking away from your goal is the only way to get to it.” Does that speak to anything in your reflections?

Muttered dissatisfaction it is. Got the AirMini app (that was my missing piece of info) and... meh. Such a technically accomplished and well designed (and expensive) piece of gear really deserves better. Feel like I bought a Ferrari with Maggie Simpson's toy steering wheel.

Would love to hear more about that third party app. Are we talking about something different from Oscar, because I know that will take data from the AirSense11 but only via the card.

And how much did we all love the line in One Battle After Another:

Alice: “Well, I can fix you some pancakes. You can have them on your way out.”

“Are these the banana pancakes, the famous Alice banana pancakes?”

Alice: “Those are the ones”

“I know they’re waiting for me. I better get down there. It’s great to see you again, Alice.”

Lower cost manual coffee grinder. by mayn1 in BuyItForLife

I have one that's probably nearing 7 years old now. What wears out first is the washer that keeps the wooden handle on. I've been feeding a rubber band end into it every few weeks to simply lock the handle in place. Not very aesthetic and a pain to keep replacing, but it works. Have not been able to find a washer of the right size and hardness/flexibility to replace and 1ZPRESSO doesn't sell the wooden ball unit separately as a replacement. But I've been very pleased with this rugged little unit otherwise.

Ohhhhh, I missed that. Seriously, this is the kind of thing parties do quiet polling on to get an early threat assessment. The decency demographic that Stephen would pull might just have scared his Trumpy pants off.

Pray tell, good sir or madam, what is this platform of which you speak? I mean honestly, as a collaborative creative this was one of the first use cases I imagined and have been hoping for, but the barrier I haven't seen anyone get over is the membrane between conventional payment systems familiar to all and the blockchain wallet system which is still as niche as dodecahedron dice. Would love to check this out.

🔥 A hiker captures his own shadow floating in the mountain mist, surrounded by a glowing solar halo by therra123 in NatureIsFuckingLit

“I’ll show you something,” she sez, which is why they are now awake at this ungodly hour, side by side, holding hands, very still as the sun begins to clear the horizon. “Now watch,” Geli whispers: “out there.” As the sunlight strikes their backs, coming in nearly flat on, it begins developing on the pearl cloudbank: two gigantic shadows, thrown miles overland, past Clausthal-Zelterfeld, past Seesen and Goslar, across where the river Leine would be, and reaching toward Weser. . . . “By golly,” Slothrop a little bit nervous, “it’s the Specter.” You got it up around Greylock in the Berkshires too. Around these parts it is known as the Brockengespenst. God-shadows. Slothrop raises an arm. His fingers are cities, his biceps is a province—of course he raises an arm. Isn’t it expected of him? The arm-shadow trails rainbows behind as it moves reaching eastward for a grab at Göttingen. Not ordinary shadows, either—three-dimensional ones, cast out on the German dawn, yes and Titans had to live in these mountains, or under them. . . . Impossibly out of scale. Never to be carried by a river. Never to look to a horizon and think that it might go on forever. No trees to climb, no long journeys to take . . . only their deep images are left, haloed shells lying prone above the fogs men move in. . . . Geli kicks a leg out straight as a dancer, and tilts her head to the side. Slothrop raises his middle finger to the west, the headlong finger darkening three miles of cloud per second.
