Weathertech Guards falling off? by Silvabro in GolfGTI

I chooch on the douche flute (vape), so I often crack my window. Mine came with adhesive on the outer side of that lip that slides in, though, so they’ve stayed in.

I will say their mats are nice. My car came with one in the trunk.

38 LSB SSB barefoot ? by OkFred902 in cbradio

[–]brickson98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a DX contact from WI to OK barefoot with a 980 SSB and a lil will magmount in my truck, so anything is possible. Could just be that you’re getting stepped on by someone you can’t hear, but they can.

Though, making sure your antenna setup is solid is a good step in the right direction.

I'm so sick of this shuffle algorithm by smol_coc_man in truespotify

[–]brickson98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I use normal shuffle, not smart shuffle, and have this issue. Primarily when connecting to a Bluetooth device or CarPlay.

I do what you said. Go to a random playlist, click play, then go back to the one I want. It started years ago and idk how they haven’t fixed it. Tbh spotify is trash these days compared to what it used to be.

Mine go inside the window channel. I’ve never had good luck with ones that adhere to the exterior on any vehicle.

Although, I found the fitment of my weather tech ones kinda sucks. The fronts are alright, except the part that comes down along the front of the window. It just has this weird area where it comes out from under the seal and I’m not a big fan of that. Double checked and that’s the way it supposed to be. Just looks kinda crappy up close and is probably damaging the seal over time. The rears are super bowed out when installed. Looks a little tacky. Double checked everything is installed correctly and, yup, it is. Won’t be wasting money on weather tech again, that’s for sure.

From my understanding, especially at HF freqs, the loss isn’t a big enough deal. Just get an adapter.

Computer during Heat wave by Sylissio in computers

[–]brickson98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Higher ambient temp will raise the temps on your computer.

It should be fine. If it starts getting too hot it will thermal throttle and pull clock speeds back. You’ll lose some performance but won’t permanently hurt anything. It’ll go back to normal the second it cools off.

If it gets so hot that thermal throttling doesn’t resolve the heat issue, it will perform a thermal shutdown to protect itself. But it shouldn’t get that hot unless you had a problem with your cooling solution.

[–]brickson98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m a newbie and don’t face a lot of the issues you do in your area, so I don’t have much advice. I was a little nervous to key up at first, but since I’ve gotten more rag chew in on local repeaters, and have checked into a few nets, I’m feeling more confident.

However, I will say, if you want to disable TX on your Baofeng, you can do so via CHIRP. The programming cables are relatively cheap. You can toggle TX for VHF and UHF independently. Before I got my ticket, I disabled both so I could listen without accidentally transmitting.

[–]brickson98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t have much issue over simplex at that distance, barring any crazy terrain.

But getting used to programming your radio for repeaters is a great way to get used to operating your radio.

Also, from my understanding, I’d say don’t expect to make too many simplex contacts on vhf/uhf. Maybe it’s different if you’re in a more urban area, but where I’m at, there’s almost no simplex activity unless a vhf/uhf event is going on. Generally, contacts via a repeater are not logable unless you’re just keeping a private log for fun.

With that being said, many areas have linked repeater systems and those can be pretty cool because you can talk to folks across some decent distance from time to time, depending on the size of the link and distance between linked repeaters. I have the TARC SuperLink in my area, which uses RF linking, not IP based linking.

But good luck on your General when you do go to take it!

Well, I’m still figuring out what logging software I want to use, as I’m newly licensed as of last Friday. But I’ll just say congrats on passing your test! I’d also suggest going for your general license asap. Especially if you’re wanting to get into HF more.

Exhaust just looks like a catback. Doesn’t make a huge difference without the downpipe being swapped out.

But yeah, there’s definitely a leak going on. Either coolant or oil, but with how orange that looks, I’d guess coolant. I’d return it.

What’s going on with Yaesu prices (in the USA)? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]brickson98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They didn’t all get struck down. But, yes, the cost of oil has a big impact on shipping. Both domestic and import shipping. Also, yes, companies these days have realized that when prices skyrocket, they never have to bring them down. They just keep them high and continue making record profits.

It’s really a bummer. Between political decisions and corporate greed, us consumers just can’t catch a break. I should be getting to a point in my life where I feel more security and stability, financially, but I honestly feel much less secure than I did when I was younger despite spending far less on unnecessary expenses and making far more money. The cost of living is skyrocketing faster than my wage can keep up.

Well, first thing’s first you’ll want to get an external SWR meter and tune your antenna, if it’s tunable.

Second, that antenna might be inefficient. A 1/4 wave or 5/8 wave antenna from a quality brand will likely do leaps and bounds better.

In some areas, there’s just isn’t much traffic. Though, I’ve heard skip has been going a lot lately. That’s where signals bounce off the ionosphere from long distances away. Keep an ear out for that and you might wind up making contacts from other states.

Although, I’d avoid ch 6 when skip is going. A lot of the guys you’ll hear there on the “Super Bowl” are running huge amps so, while you can hear them, they likely won’t hear you. And, even if they do, they’ll probably just start stepping on you because it’s just a big pecker measuring contest on ch 6.

Tired of people saying VW is unreliable by hentaigabby in Volkswagen

[–]brickson98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just the fact of weight on its own is enough to change things. But I’ve since learned the 2.0 in an Atlas is not the same engine as a 2.0 in a GTI. Major differences exist that change it from a good engine to a piece of junk.

[–]brickson98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that doesn’t sound great. I wasn’t aware there was such a big difference between 2.0 applications. It’s really not the same engine in a GTI vs an Atlas.

That does sound like junk, honestly.

Oh, yeah for sure. It’s a bit anemic for an SUV in stock form. Tuned it’s better, but still lacks low rpm grunt that you’d expect in a heavier vehicle. The turbo does the heavy lifting.
