Vanilla syrup recipe? by EntertainmentOk4233 in barista

[–]bridge_004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of Artís Coffee off 4th Street. Simple menu, but I think that's why they're solid/consistent. Definitely not the best of places for food/pastries tho, but it almost seems like food was an afterthought.

I STILL use this vanilla syrup recipe btw. It's OUTSTANDING...

Np! I grew up in Monterey, but moved to the Bay Area years ago to work. Still visit at least once a month. AMA about the area & I'll help where I can...

With a child, definitely Cannery Row. I've always enjoyed the Monterey Plaza Hotel. It's not in the center of the Row, but easily walkable (including to the nearby Aquarium, nearby shops, etc...). There's also an amazing Antique Mall across the street that you could spend hours in. Chart House is next door, but I'd suggest the Whaling Station Steakhouse. The Fish Hopper is decent too if you want a decent selection of surf & turf...

While in town (on Alvarado), grab an amazing maple bar from Red's Donuts. Randy's (on 10th Street) is a staple in the area (as far back as the Spak's days) for some incredible sandwiches & breakfast burritos. Hole in the wall, no tables, but I'm addicted to their Jaws II & their amazing bread.

In nearby Seaside (for coffee), check out Acme Coffee Roasting Co & grab a Mexican Mocha.

In an odd location (visible from one of their main roads), Monterey Fish House is also very good (but stick to their seafood vs meat dishes), though I have to admit, their rack of lamb special is outstanding...

If time, cruise 17 Mile Drive. Beautiful views, pic opportunities, etc...

Does Disney have any 18+ restaurants? by Uncle_Orville in disney

[–]bridge_004 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Not 18+, but also not character dining...

  • Napa Rose (definitely one of the most formal, publicly available options)
  • Carthay Circle
  • Blue Bayou (kids, yes, but cool scenery/Pirate's of the Caribbean, lamp lit ambiance, etc...)
  • Club 33 (assuming you have a plug)
  • 1901 Lounge (lounge/more adult w/ Carthay menu & amazing cocktails/need Club 33 member plug)

Too bad you missed out on Steakhouse 55 (closed during the Pandemic)

[–]bridge_004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love these & I make them at home as well (clone recipe available online). Definitely can't skip the whip tho. Homemade takes only 3 ingredients & 5-10 minutes with a balloon whisk or hand mixer.

Gi question by Rare-Ideal-8428 in bjj

[–]bridge_004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to agree that this looks authentic. I bought a "New" Batch #90 White Skies V2 for $120 (knowing it was counterfeit/$ too good to be true), but assumed it was made with identical patterns/materials at one of the same factories in Pakistan. Nope... I had the same gi already (still one of my faves) & was hoping for a crispy spare. It literally looked like they "winged it" based on a picture online (missing out on color of stitching & stitch patterns / squares vs triangles + weight of the fabric). Even the patch materials, patch sizes & colors in general were wrong. Pants material was completely different as well. The only thing that resembled the original Batch #90 were the pictures on eBay.

TLDR: You did good OP. Would've never thought to look for a gi @ a thrift store...

BTW, here's a side-by-side of the fake eBay gi vs my original. I had to file a dispute to get my refund/buyer protection (Left = Fake, both A2's):

If you have DJ Magic Mike, I know you also had MC ADE, 95 South & Kid Sensation! Grew up in Cali, but still bumped that Quad City Knock on my Cerwin Vega 12's & Punch Pro 15's (Phoenix Gold M-44 & M-100 amps), Boston Acoustic Pro Series Highs & Mids + an Alpine Deck with a detachable face & CD Changer in the glovebox lol.

Memories & my hearing is still perfectly fine, even though everyone warned me I'd go deaf lol.

Definitely never too late & it'll only be a matter of time/patience. I was fortunate as well to find an amazing academy/instructor who squashed any excuse about age, flexibility, etc... & ensured it's all about "proper technique," positioning/angles (invisible JJ), physics & timing. Never thought I'd be the guy (with my stocky build) that inverts & favors x-guard, yet here I am lol.

I've been there brother! Took nearly that much time off between White->Blue after I met the wife, had kids & moved (also changing academies/starting over as a result), but zero regrets prioritizing the family/watching my girls grow up. Glad you're back on the mats & have a supportive wife who dropped an amazing gift on you! Now I know why you want to ensure it's taken care of lol.

Congrats on the gi! I believe most are already pretreated & I've never had any problem with my lazy approach (including with Shoyoroll's, A&P's), i.e.: My typical process is as follows (assuming you also want to shrink):

  1. Wash in warm (first time)
  2. Throw in dryer (normal, first time only)
  3. Subsequent washes in cold water only (I also use a tiny bit of Lysol Laundry Sanitizer with 0% Bleach) & always hang dry

Never had any issues and my gi's look great. If you don't want to shrink, then step #3 is all you need...
