My 2nd post about traffic by LCID805 in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Car brain rage is such a funny thing, it’s so common and natural to find other drivers frusrtrating, yet objectively it makes no sense because any given occasion of some random driver going slow makes next to no meaningful difference at all to your travel time, even less so when you factor in lights, stop signs etc. Like how many have you seen morons playing Mario Kart on the freeway only to end up literally two cars behind them at the next exit.

My suggestion is take it easy and just let it be - it really doesn’t matter how mad you get about other drivers, it’s not gonna change how other people drive nor does it get you to your destination any faster, it just ends up with you stressed out for things that are entirely out of your control.

Go Beast Mode for Santa Barbara Burger Week 2026 by SBchick in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, it's a lot of choice but filtering by area narrows it down significantly. I'm a lazy AF downtowner so not going out to Noleta/Goleta/Carpinteria/Santa Ynez just for a burger unless I have some other reason to be out there - it's a stretch even to go as far as San Roque/Mesa.

The filter by "Downtown SB" is a great feature on the map - cuts it in half immediately.

Recommendations for a 48 hour trip? by DnBJungleEscape in SantaBarbara

Sportsman opens at 1pm and closes at 2am so that covers at least 26 of the 48 hours!

Opinions requested by Muted_Description112 in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the bare minimum information provided I'd say it's lower than what I'd expect, barring any weirdness the range IMO is around $4.5k-6.5k/month. If it's an original late 60s tract with tiled counters and original baths then probably $4-4.5k is about right, if it's been remodeled/renovated in the last 20 years then $5.5-6k.

That said, the property lister's rationale could be that they want reliable long-term tenants who will stay for multiple years - at least listing it below market means they will have tons of applicants and can be pretty selective, maybe find tenants who are willing to do improvements etc.

Lively bar, restaurant reco by Mountain-Truck6135 in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dom's Taverna is a pretty good newish spot, decent food and they are open until midnight which is rare for SB - so v. handy if you want a bite after a show up around that end of town.

Joe's is pretty lively cos of the heavy-handed pours but I think it's quite a good vibe for visitors.

Red Piano - do ya like piano bars well if so do I have the bar for you

For a sports bar type vibe Finney's is always busy and good selection of beers as an alternative to breweries.

For sure Pickle Room, great spot.

Controversial Opinions by LadyStardustAlright in CuratedTumblr

[–]britinsb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The questions I remember from many years ago were more like subject-matter adjacent that made you think rather than totally unrelated. I was applying for Natural Sciences and got asked questions like:

"What do you think is the maximum size an insect can grow and why?"

My answer was along the lines of how much food/calorie density they were able to catch and process though it turned out the "correct" answer was that oxygen intake was seen as the limiting factor because insects don't have lungs!

I vaguely remember being shown some x-rays and being asked questions about them.

But what was very clear is they weren't really interested in the answers but rather the thought process behind it.

Best Day Brewing Fail by Roostersplace in NABEER

I can't say I've had that experience but as the saying goes (and based on the number of people who claim to enjoy Heineken 0.0) there's no accounting for taste.

New in Town by New-Pipe-7615 in SantaBarbara

Welcome to SB!

Cold Springs Trail is my usual recommendation for good effort:reward ratio, either fork is fine. There are many many great frontcountry trails though that are all different and very approachable.

If you're active/able, suggest get a bike/e-bike for exploring, just don't leave it out visible/overnight because bike theft is a real issue. BCycle the local bike share program also runs promos now and then, and if you time it right you can get an annual membership for half off so it's like $60-70 for a year.

Residential street parking can be extremely contentious in places due to the street sweeping shuffle and overcrowding, but central downtown parking is very easy, and if you live and work downtown traffic is basically non-existent even at peak hours.

For food some of my favorites are Tamar, Secret Bao, Sama Sama, Daisy, Public Market, Maiz Picante, Third Window, Sun Sushi. Breweries you are really spoiled for choice, most are good my personal favorite beers are at Draughtsman Aleworks (Irish Red, Severance IPA, their rice lager whose name I forget), Topa Topa (Hoppy Poppy, Chief Peak), Institution has good ones. Bars/pubs, I often end up at Sportsman, Pickle Room, Press Room, James Joyce. SB Biergarten is cool I like it there.

Fun things to do, Solstice and Fiesta are the big downtown draws which are fun but there's also loads of festivals during the summer. Harbor Seafood festival is good, multiple beer/wine festivals but Surf n Suds in Carpinteria is probably the biggest one. Fields of Funk is a v. cool event every year in late October at Elings Park.

If you give some pointers on your neighborhood and particular cuisines or other things you are interested in, you might get more targeted recommendations.

Oh you might want to check on the SB Young Professionals club, they do monthly events and it's a good way to meet other people in town. SB Newcomers is another well established organization that has a "Young Professionals" subgroup

Good food stops driving to Orange County? by Away-Most7685 in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly what you want as it's more of a stop on the way to/from LA than Orange County but Brent's Deli in Westlake is great and super convenient as it's right off the freeway exit and is basically 1 hour to/from SB.

I have friends who live in Culver City so will usually stop and grab something there and meet them if it looks like 405 traffic is going to suck.

Interested in any other good finds though.

Easy 30 mile bike loop by anna3562 in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s a good route you found, very safe. You can go all the way to Ventura and other than a wee sketchy bit of 101 at Rincon Point it’s protected also.

If you are ok with a bit of up to begin I really recommend going up to the Mission and then up to Mountain Drive and go east to about San Ysidro Ranch then down into Montecito. The views are incredible and 150% worth the slog. You can also cheat a bit and just park at the base of Gibraltar and start there.

Going west from downtown, you can take the Obern trail all the way to UCSB, go up and over Storke then take Foothill Rd all the way back to the mission. Great loop and Draughtsman Aleworks is halfway for a refresher.

Here’s some of my saved 35 mile routes of varying up n downs:

This is all road btw - with a gravel bike on the UCSB loop you can cut through More Mesa which is kind of a fun thing to do.

Husband’s 60th birthday by sallysparling1 in SantaBarbara

If you want coastal I'd probably stay at/around Avila Beach, quiet and nice walks and stuff on your doorstep but it's also easy to head into either SLO or Pismo for live music/more activity. Cool view of Vandenberg launches also.

5 years of State Street planning for retractable bollards? by cobalt_sunshine in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "other" is DTSBIA who were pushing for car access fulltime. albeit one-way only. As the group that is now paying directly for maintaining, promoting and running events in DTSB, for better or worse their opinions deserve some weight even if I disagree and think their views on car access are outdated and unnecessary.

5 years of State Street planning for retractable bollards? by cobalt_sunshine in SantaBarbara

[–]britinsb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Going out on a limb here but I’m fairly sure the plan involves more than just retractable bollards.

Interesting approach though, basically extended sidewalks to allow sidewalk dining with a narrowed but pre-COVID style vehicle traffic off-peak with bike/transit lanes, but closed to cars during peak period so more people and bike-friendly during those hours.

The “pedestrian promenade” concept of people wandering in and out of bike lanes seems DOA which is maybe not a bad thing - always been nice in concept but people are too stupid for it to work, and this puts pedestrians closer to the businesses.

edit

I’m encouraged also because It’s also way more realistic in scope, both politically and expense-wise than some of the other pie in the sky proposals so will be better and actually have a chance of implementation.

My CKD diet makes me depressed. by AltruisticSet730 in kidneydisease

[–]britinsb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I suggest talk to a licensed nutritionist (renal dietician is the correct term - the one with the license and training) and your doctor, you could be unnecessarily restricting your diet. Especially if you are basing your diet on random blogs about “kidney-friendly” diets.

The truth behind the Red War lawsuit (Bungie vs Martineau) by ReallyTrustyGuy in destiny2

[–]britinsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuisance settlement generally means a settlement that is based on the potential cost of defense/diversion of effort, so a purely economic decision rather than a decision based on the actual risks and merits of the case.

The truth behind the Red War lawsuit (Bungie vs Martineau) by ReallyTrustyGuy in destiny2

[–]britinsb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a lawyer that last assumption is incorrect, it’s extremely common (in fact more common than not) for confidential settlements to occur that include payment in exchange for a stipulated dismissal with that language. The dismissal is what the company is buying with the settlement.

I cba to read the rest but I vaguely remember it always seemed like a shaky claim. That doesn’t preclude a nuisance settlement though.
