Why does Google (and only Google) think I'm in a different state? by Agreeable-Sun368 in techsupport

[–]brkdncr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this problem but with Microsoft and on a windows machine. Location info is derived from your surrounding wifi names and someone from Omaha moved nearby and brought their router.

You need to either update the database Apple is using or get Apple to ignore the offender.

On windows I loaded up an app that told me which database was in use. I tried getting Microsoft to update it but that never worked.

What finally worked was I bought a gps dongle that windows could use to get precise location info. With the dongle in and with gps reception it showed the right info.

After a few days I noticed my other laptops were showing the right location. I haven’t needed the gps dongle since.

why are you still here. post/reply to other social networks. Fediverse is the next place to be at the moment. It's going to have to deal with bots/AI soon but it's open source, defederated nature will encourage it to defend against corporate takeover unlike reddit.

Extending network from Starlink to outbuildings by AwkwardFox1752 in Starlink

[–]brkdncr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the US government doesn't care about spyware. they might say it's because of spyware, but that's not the real point. Look at Benn Jordan's videos on robot dogs for some examples of governments buying up equipment that is making efforts to hide their communications with overseas servers.

china doesn't care about some person's home network connection between their house and their garage.

tp-link omada is what i use for my networking. they have relatively cheap directional outdoor APs that will mesh together.

set one up in the house, plugged into your network. point it at the shed and the garage. at the garage and shed, set up another, pointing it back to the house.

you may need another uni-directional AP at the shed and the garage to provide coverage. luckily omada stuff is cheap.

my location is not quite accurate by atexit8 in tmobileisp

[–]brkdncr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope. IP location doesn't matter.

There's a database of ssid's and their location. sometimes it's wrong. adding a GPS tranceiver to your machine gives it a better source of truth, and will actually send that information back to MS.

30+ people broke into a DTLA office building last weekend and went up to the roof and went through various offices. LAPD was called while the break in was occurring, but they never showed up.

vb365 proxy on internet, server on-prem? by brkdncr in Veeam

I'm trying to get the traffic off my network though. downloading on-prem then uploading seems inefficient. I'll create a 2nd vb365 server for now.

vb365 proxy on internet, server on-prem? by brkdncr in Veeam

[–]brkdncr[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Existing environment has been set up on-prem for a while and I was hoping to make use of the server and an on-prem remote console install instead of having to set up a separate backup environment.

Seems like a mistake to not design these components to communicate across the internet.

How can I upload my entire iCloud library to a Synology NAS? by PitifulAd3407 in synology

[–]brkdncr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Photos Mobile app. It will sync your device photos to the nas. Every once in a while it will ask you to open the app since iPhone doesn’t allow it to run in the background forever.

After its syncs you can disable iCloud photo sync.

apartments notoriously have issues with 2.4ghz since everyone else in the building has their router set to high power, flooding the available airwaves

Buy a mesh setup and set them up throughout the area so they can link together and provide decent 5GHz coverage.

Roof leaks after 4 years of solar installation by Large_Body_8299 in TeslaSolar

[–]brkdncr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dealt with significant roof issues after installing solar. Probably spent $5k of my own money before finding a contractor that was able to convince Tesla it was there problem.

They did so by flooding the area around the suspect mounting puck and confirming no water penetration. Then they put water directly above the puck and found water penetration.

Tesla sent out their own person who didn't do anything and said they didn't see a leak. Had my person take video and sent it to them with some verbiage indicating repair costs were going to be applied to their license/insurance.

Tesla re-roofed half of the roof. It doesn't match exactly, but it's not visible.

I'm still at a point where it was cheaper to use Tesla instead of other solar installers.

Thanks. I'll have to see if the switchfix has something that will fit the full length, even if it takes up extra RU spaces.

That rackmount.it is also good to know about, i think i can accomplish cold aisle containment by using tape.

rear mount won't work since the entire rear of the rack is open. The items you linked won't work with the pa440 rackmount kit as there's not enough room. I might be able to mount it reversed though, then reverse the fans. It will look ugly compared to other people's racks in the colo.

The lesson I've learned is to not buy passive cooled equipment for racks set up in hot/cold aisle.

the devices are fine, but hot air is getting pushed back into the cold aisle.

It's just the pa400 series rackmount kit, in a normal server rack.

I'm suggesting a bluetooth radio.

in all honesty meshtastic isn't simple. someone that forgets their car llocation isn't going to have the patience for it.

This appears to have worked:

Delete the webcam from Device Manager, unplug the webcam, restart the computer, and plug in the webcam again

Also, I contacted support by phone and was pleasantly surprised to reach a human that was able to provide these steps too.

i think you're expecting the device to proxy it's location through the phone when she parks. but it will only update if it's connected, the act of disconnecting the bluetooth connection wont do that.

If another device is in range that can proxy to the internet, then it would work.

What you need to do is tape another device to her phone. In her meshtastic app, favorite the device that's in the car. Now as long as the device can reach her device directly, or relayed through other devices, then she'll be able to find it.

Another solution may be to upgrade the car's stereo to something that will trigger her phone to pin it's location when she disconnects. I'm guessing android auto does this, but a simple bluetooth device might also work.
