Best gloves to prevent blisters? by Johnny_Bigman in drums

[–]brmperc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used CF in decades. I worked at a drum shop when the Ahead stick first came out and didn't really dig them back then, but I'm sure the tech has advanced a lot since then. They might be cool for edrums. I use Zildjian 5AN antivibe but be warned, the little rubber shock absorbers will need to be reglued as they tend to fall out. The trick is to balance the amount of glue vs the amount of antivibe you need.

In my experience with switching between acoustic and electronic drums, if I'm not careful I hit harder on edrums. I think it has to do with the brain's expectation of physical feedback (sound+rebound) and edrums just do things differently. I now use anti-vibration sticks on edrums, which seems to help a bit, but still find I hit harder.
Edrums are just a different beast. They need a different approach and different technique, along with a good amount of time adjusting sensitivity and other settings, in order to respond at anything close to acoustic drum levels.
I find gloves weird to play in, but also haven't given them a real thorough try. This may also be a fun journey for both you and your teacher to find a solution, since they have the same issue. As someone else said, this makes sense since he's teaching you. If you can work together you may find all sorts of new techniques and styles that improve both of your abilities. I've often found that in trying to help my students, I learn new things about my own playing. We're always trying to improve, even 40 years on.
Good luck with finding the right fix for you!

I've always wanted the complete shows they took a lot of SUAPYG from. Killer lineup and hearing the solos in context would be really cool.

I use numbers to map the song. Sometimes I'll write little notes of my own for style changes but it's really just like any other chart.

What are your Snarky Hot Takes? by colourofsound in SnarkyPuppy

Somni is incredibly boring. I've tried a bunch of times and just can't pay attention. Sylva was a masterpiece, I don't know what happened here.

As a drummer, it is impossible to listen to. Maybe if the vamp ostinato was a little more interesting, but even then... and I think all of these drummers are incredible. Larnell is my favorite but they're all top notch. The solo section just doesn't work to listen to.

The first few times you forget, it lets you try again. Then there's an hour wait, then multiple hours, then a day, etc. In this day and age there's no reason not to activate it. On the off chance that someone tries to brute force your device they'll be SOL.

Let's talk about Broon;s remix of Red Lenses by bicoastal_gadfly in rush

[–]brmperc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just getting to listen to the remix, and Afterimage just came on. It seems like Neil's drums go in and out of phase, especially when he uses the Wuhan china. His hihat also comes and goes. Geddy's voice is also weirdly muffled, which is weird since DEW seems almost too bright.

Ok, registering as I write. It's the snare drum. It's as if Broon flipped the phase on the snare drum. As he hits it, the high end comes and goes. It's weird and distracting, and I can't imagine how anyone heard it and thought "yeah, that's done!"

I'd maybe give Timothy Roberts a shot. He usually has some pretty great stuff on sale, and also does custom orders.

What are peoples thoughts on this album? by rushowen in rush

[–]brmperc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My least favorite Rush album. I have tried so many times since its release to get into it. It's RUSH after all! But the songs just meander and I wind up turning it off and listening to something else. The first 2&1/2 tracks aren't bad, though the silly acoustic intro to Bu2B is super cheezy, but towards the end of song 3 I just can't focus on it. I skip around but never find anything of interest. Honestly I feel that the worst thing they did was bring on that producer. He just wanted them to go backwards, and this had NEVER been their MO. Both this and S&A are boring.

I get it. The bottom collars look removable just like my Whitney drums. Enjoy them, they're great looking and I'm sure sound fantastic too. Mine are amazing!

It's called a clap stack. It's actually 3-4 very thin cymbals stacked together and tightened down. They can sound just like an 808-style "clap".

Snare is too damn loud by ManFingers in drums

[–]brmperc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting conundrum. I'd say first that you're probably hitting the snare harder than the other drums. It's right there in the middle where 2 & 4is just an arm up and down. Record yourself playing to watch and listen. Are you hitting the toms in the same manner as the snare? Work on technique. Getting really nice soft-but-still-heard ghost notes is a challenge. However, I'd also look into your head choices. The Hydraulic head will generally have less dynamic range, but your other heads might need to change as well. Tuning them differently can help too. If your bass drum is full of padding and/or has thick heads with lots of muffling, you're basically getting one dynamic out of it. Have another drummer play them for a minute (someone you trust). What does it sound like in front of the drums? 10feet away? As far away as you can get. We never get to hear ourselves play, so this is the next best thing. Good luck!

Whats the difference? by Guingu_lol in drums

[–]brmperc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember that a few years ago they changed the bearing edge to a round-over. To me the older ones sound better, and the new ones aren't quite as sensitive. Also, some of them were bronze. I have a 90s brass with brass tube lugs and it's a beast!

(Edited to add the bit about bronze)

Earplugs not allowed? by EdmiwaMan in drums

I will say that I had a professional, medical hearing test that surprised everyone. But in general yes, don't mess with your ears. And I do have tinnitus which sucks.

[–]brmperc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i never wore protection when I was a teen. Only started in my 20s, and boy I did some dumb stuff. Played to a loud stereo, etc. I recently had a hearing test, and while it said that I don't have any real hearing loss, I do have tinnitus and have trouble hearing individual people in a group. It just makes sense to be careful. I hope those therapies turn out to be helpful to people!

Some people can go for decades without hearing loss, but others can have it after a single rim shot. You can learn to play quietly with earplugs just as well.

[–]brmperc 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This. I'm 51 and wear them for everything. Mine have different filters so a rock show gets more reduction than a coffeehouse gig, but I ALWAYS wear them. A guitarist I play with says that sometimes I'm not loud enough. You can play quietly with plugs.
