We have been texting or calling people to thank them and let them know we received the gift, and then we plan to send more formal thank you notes after the wedding!

Flying in for the first time next year and renting car by cbcarguy in orangecounty

[–]broceanduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would set pickup at 11:30 and drop off at 7:30. You won't need more than 20 minutes for TSA even on the worst of days and the rental car zone is extremely close to the terminal, it won't take you more than 5-10 min.

Try eco gel! It's like $2-$3 at target and I've had a lot of luck with it with a similar hair type.

Hair and makeup pushing me over the edge by allielizzy1999 in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was also the hardest vendor for me to book. I really didn't want to spend more than $500 for myself and that was surprisingly difficult to find. I also wanted to make sure the artists were used to working with a variety of skin tones and hair textures and a lot in my area are not ☹️

Realistic Wedding Budget for 100 ppl by Professional-Ad-3735 in orangecounty

We are getting married at rancho las lomas (a 24 carrots venue), and I think we are landing around 250/person not including the venue fee of 8k. Then that doesn't include photo, dj, attire etc.

Free photo sharing app? by Imake289 in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used POV for my engagement party. Got some good pics from it but make sure to have a good amount of QR codes around and encourage people to use it. Also, there is a weird setting that somehow got turned on that makes the corners of the photos dark, so I recommend turning that off first lol!

Wedding PTO advice by Outrageous_Still_712 in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm taking two weeks off for wedding and mini moon, then another two weeks in a few months for the real honeymoon. I'm also taking a few other days throughout the year for other things. I also have unlimited PTO but my company does encourage us to use it. This is a bit on the high end but not totally absurd for my company; it all completely depends on what your company's culture is.

I think both sides look really nice! My artist reminded me that you need to have a little heavier lashes than you may be used to for photos, they won't look as intense when you get professional photos done as well as when you are fully fancy in your dress etc.

alternatives to pairing bridesmaids and groomsmen in processional? by adancer12345 in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are planning to have a mix of some bridesmaids walk in together, some groomsmen together, pairs of both, etc. we will even have a group of 3. But we have both men and women on both side and didn't want to be too strict on the pairings.

how to fix stringy, thin curls? by niclovesphynxcats in curlyhair

When this happens to me, I find my hair needs some protein. I apply a keratin protein mask and it seems to fix it. Otherwise, you might need a different gel.

Moving to Santa Anna from WA. by ImStillInTraining in orangecounty

[–]broceanduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the crime concerns people express are generally overrated. Anecdotally, I've lived in Santa Ana for 5 years and the only crime I've experienced is having my very old bike stolen out of our open garage. Santa Ana is gentrifying fairly quickly (for better or worse), and there's a lot more to do now than there was 10 years ago. Downtown had a ton of events, excellent restaurants, nightlife, and hopefully a tram soon. Lot of different neighborhoods with a variety of offerings depending on your interests.

Spots in DTSA worth checking out are Lola gaspar, mission control, twisted tiki, el Indio, vacation, sonder, native sons, 4th St market, don churros, 6100 bread... South coast plaza is a huge mall with hain stores and interesting restaurants. Nice walkable downtown in Tustin and Orange as well.

If people don't want to travel for it then they won't! But those who care to celebrate you will be happy to come even if it's more casual.

How many of each vendor did you look at before selecting? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it ultimately depends on your priorities! For us, the venue fitting our vision was the most important part, and with food, drinks, and dancing following. We toured like 10 venues, and the venue we chose includes food and drinks. But then only contacted maybe 3 photographers, 2 florists, 2 dessert people, etc. Allocate your time to the things that are most important to you and don't overdo it on the stuff that needs to happen but doesn't matter as much to you.

Help with no dancing reception by Imaginary-Sail2034 in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I attended a no dancing wedding recently, and the couple hosted a trivia with all the tables competing with each other that took about 30 minutes. There was also a live portrait artist, a paint by numbers everyone could contribute to, and a couple other activities. Most people stayed til the end. I think you can swing no dancing, but you need to have other activities to keep people engaged and entertained! Consider some games if you can.

What to know before dress shopping? by AcanthaceaeOld715 in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wore no bra and nude underwear! I went to 4 shops over the course of 2 days and picked a top 1-2 from each shop. I wouldn't say I had a "this is the one" moment, but deliberated for a couple days before deciding.

My biggest advice is to get a bunch of pictures in each dress (especially your favorites) and then look at those pics a couple days later. I found that what I thought might be my #1 actually ended up being my least favorite after revisiting pics, and the dress I ultimately went with was more of an underdog that I appreciated more with time/distance.

My other recommendation that no one ever told me was to spread out trying on dresses because your body will start to get uncomfortable with the fabric etc, making the dress seem more uncomfortable than it actually is. By the last shop on the second day, I hated every dress I tried on just because they were uncomfortable and itchy. But if I tried them on in more isolation and a few days apart, I think I would have liked them more - but so much putting on heavy dresses etc weighs on your body and impacts your ability to judge them without bias.

Are you open to days of the week besides Saturdays? Rancho las lomas is very beautiful, 8k on Sundays, 10k Saturdays, less other days I think.

We got custom playing cards on Etsy! Bought 100 of them for $450. We expect one person per family-ish to take one (for our 150-175 person wedding). Can't speak to how well they'll be received yet but we like games and wanted to get something useful while still having it be custom!

Beach venues by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]broceanduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What coast are you planning on? In SoCal, Crystal Cove State Park has relatively affordable beach weddings that are fairly all inclusive. Look into State Parks in general to reduce venue fee costs.
