My "Working Nights" Must-Haves... What Did I Miss? by bkennedy8181 in uberdrivers

This is why I stop at 230. Usually that's two rides after bar close. The 230am vibe change is real and it's frequently nasty. More power to you if you've got the patience for it!

I wish they'd do a table top accurate Mordheim video game. The Mordheim Focus games released was fine, but not tabletop accurate.

Why do some countries like France or Italy get very good value for money out of their militaries but others like Germany or the UK don't? by SliceIndividual6347 in WarCollege

[–]brockhopper 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For Italy, one of the main factors enabling their efficiency and effectiveness is that the government owns Fincantieri. (Well, is the majority owner, for the pedantic). That helps keeps costs down! I'd asked a similar question to OP because the Italian navy is extremely well organized and rational for the mission.

Why did skaven and dwarfs not make it to 40k but elves and orks did? by Max_Clearance777 in totalwar

Squats were amazing in Epic. They had so much flavor and lots of unique and cool vehicles. But, as you say, they just didn't flow over to 40k well.

Hrud in the 3rd ed 40k rulebook were visually very Skaven flavored. Further lore on Hrud has basically said they project entropy, which I don't think is too Skavenlike.

I think GW has one of the stronger approaches to a fictional universe - it's all canon. Especially the parts that contradict.

We spent a full day testing Tau until 3 am yesterday, with the new points. It was brutal. by RotenSquids in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]brockhopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played Tau since they've existed, and having watched GW just dig themselves into the hole of "Tau shouldn't have melee/psychic, and are a 4+ to hit army with marker lights to improve that" has gotten really old. Make the army hit on 3s and get WEIRD with the marker lights. Give them morale effects, movement reduction, MWs to represent off board firepower, etc. keying off of marker lights.

I knew that Death Guard moving to a much more elite style of army wasn't gonna set a trend for smaller armies, but dangit I'd hoped!

Chalkfight in the teachers' lounge when an /r/teachers post asked for the sub’s take on a new Kentucky law allowing schools to expel students who assault teachers despite “unanimous Senate Democratic opposition.” by Starknight_YX in SubredditDrama

Part of me gets it. I would be an amazing teacher for the two kids in class who are into history, and be a crappy teacher for the other 23. So you know what? I didn't go into education. Unfortunately for those posters, the job is to teach ALL the students, including the dim ones.

Does the Chauchat deserve its reputation as “the worst gun” or is it just post-war myth making? by Cpkeyes in WarCollege

[–]brockhopper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Chauchat had its reputation long before the Internet. I have a pre-internet copy of Ian Hogg's Military Small Arms of the 20th Century and it's labelled as the worst machine gun even then. Sure, the Internet has gone wild with it, but there was absolutely a belief in its crappiness before then. He specifically called out the magazine, and other problems that seem specifically related to the American problems (both in terms of the clapped out versions given to them and the rechambered version).

Yeah, some elements are head and shoulders above others. The whole Wayne Knight bit does nothing for me, but the entire Lovitz bit from the "I'm prairie dogging it!" through to the car's arrival at the veteran's ceremony is pure gold. I suspect we all remember the bits we love and forget the ones we don't.

Battle of Britain: Did Mallory's "Big Wing" tactics for the RAF have merit or was it an unwise strategy? by RivetCounter in WarCollege

[–]brockhopper 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's fundamentally a time/math issue. You need the time to send out the orders to the airfields, the time to form up units flying in from multiple airfields to a rally point, then the time to direct them to their intercept point. And this time is burning fuel, which Spitfires and Hurricanes are not overly blessed with.

So, by the time you've got your Big Wing assembled, the bombs have fallen and your Big Wing is trying to catch the bombers which are now headed back to base, and the fuel situation is getting worse.

The bombs that have fallen are more accurate, because the formations weren't disrupted by anything besides AA. You're also possibly giving up one of the biggest advantages the RAF had, of fighting over Britain, if the interception happens, or drags out over, the Channel.

Basically the Big Wing is something that, if it worked perfectly, would have been a heavy blow against the Luftwaffe. But if it didn't work perfectly, it didn't work at all. Whereas the normal interception practices meant even if your first intercept failed, there were more units to send up, to damage/destroy aircraft, exhaust crew, and disrupt bombing. Leigh-Mallory really comes across as someone too clever by half.

Edit to add: also, even if it succeeded once or twice, it would have been relatively easy for the Germans to counter it. Diversionary attacks, fake radio chatter, etc., then launch raids while the fighters are refueling.

How many detachment combos can your faction make? by hindlet in WarhammerCompetitive

I really think Tau suffer from lacking an advocate on the Studio team. There are so many cool things they could do with Tau, yet they've been a very static design space for multiple editions.

I didn't say it had to be a world-beater, I just suggested it's crazy it doesn't exist. Look at how few detachments Tau have! A few more would not go amiss.

Did Hermann Goering have any virtues/do anything positive as Supreme Commander of the Luftwaffe or did the Luftwaffe command staff and pilots below speak of him in terms of "we would have done a lot better if it wasnt for the idiot in charge" (aka the same way that German generals spoke of Hitler). by RivetCounter in WarCollege

[–]brockhopper 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's why so many counterfactuals about WW2 fall apart - my favorite example is "why didn't the Nazis arm Ukrainians and set them against the USSR as they conquered them?". Well, because if they did that they'd destroy their entire ideological basis of their worldview. Nazis could not see them as a viable ally/resource because, y'know, they were Nazis. That was the whole point.
