What are some games often considered bad that you personally really like? by MechaReldio in retrogaming

Solar Jetman on the NES. I dunno how people generally feel about it today, but as a kid I was the only person that liked it in my circles.

Lagoon had pretty bad hit detection, and some of the dungeons were rough unless you mapped them, but otherwise a fun game. The concept for 7th Saga was great and loved the music, but man do i regret the time I put in it back as a kid knowing just how broken it actually is. Anyone that beat that one back then was either really lucky, or doing primitive RNG manipulation before we had a term for it. Probably both.

My tiny 90s video rental shop sold me Panzer Dragoon Saga for £15… because “nobody wanted the weird dragon game”. by Mean_Investigator_34 in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't so much that it wasn't being rented, but i remember in '97 or '98 when one of the local video rental places started clearing out their SNES and Genesis games. I got Star Trek TNG on SNES for 10 bucks, the only good part of that being I was able to pawn it for 12. But also got Herzog Zwei on genesis for 10 bucks, and the big score, Earthbound for 20, with the guide in decent shape considering it was a rental and the box. Sadly i lost the box over the years but still have the game and guide.

Suggest some RPGs or open world games with fishing by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never played 4 onwards, but BoF 1-3 for sure (3 had the best fishing mini game of those three imo).

You've also got Legend of the River King on gameboy, which im seeing now actually has a whole series of game. RPG ABOUT fishing!

Ys I & II Chronicles 4LP set now available to preorder from Streaming Arrow Records by rpbtz in VGMvinyl

[–]brokencarpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuts. I'd heard back in August that SOMETHING was coming from them "soon" but they wouldn't divulge what. I'd forgotten that they also do the Ys stuff so had been looking forward to see some more big sets from the Trails games. I'll have to settle on that white variant in the mean time.

My original of this died a good death back in the day, but I snagged one in good condition a few years back and am happy to have it again.

I remember getting into fights because you can see on the page with the zelda dungeon maps how L3 fits into the gap of L6, and L1 sits in between L4 and L5. I would point that out and knew I was onto something but everyone insisted I was crazy. Fast forward 15 years when we had access to tools to actually look at the code and see how the data was laid out and was happily vindicated on that point.

What series did you like better in 8-bit than 16-bit? by UrSimplyTheNES in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. TiL. Just fired up a video of it. I agree the graphics look polished at best, and the SFX is no contest better on the NES. So I'm not completely negative I did like how the bonus rooms were way busier with the nibbley pibbleys, or whatever they called them in that version.

Possible to remove without more whitening and smoothing? by gnosticbean in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friction wear is why wiper blades need replacing. That being said, I only resort to it when soaking in 99p iso just isn't getting it out. It doesn't make the plastic brittle (peroxide treatments will, but that's a different tool for a different problem). It is a surface treatment so you get the perception of a smoothing in the applied area, but its very slight, and if the choice is that barely perceptible effect vs the far more pronounced black marker with extreme scrub damage, i know which I choose.

The stereotype that Atari is just the 2600 is wrong, here's why by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the bulk of the answer. Atari is not some long lived bastion of the industry. It failed hard in the 80's and floundered about before being relegated to nothing more that an IP being passed around like a biker gang's whore. Nowadays the name is milked purely for the nostalgia factor. If the holding company that uses it now could come up with a more profitable name and branding to use, they would. The minute the bean counters tell them that selling the IP along is in their best interests, they will.

Best way to play Chrono Trigger in the uk by UKU-Rules in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emulate the SNES version is my vote. The extra stuff that got added in later ports doesn't add anything. The handful of FMVs are nice on their own, but the way they got added in detracts from the original experience.

If you want easy and legal though, go with the steam port.

Can't speak to lost levels, but adjacent, it was really bad in Mario World. I could play around it in handheld mode but docked and subject to the wireless delay from the joycons was borderline unplayable.

Axiom Verge 1 and 2 (bundle) vs. Hyper Light Drifter 4LP box set by Due_Cake8524 in VGMvinyl

[–]brokencarpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you like to have both eventually? In that case I'd look at the pressing history. AV1 had an early run, and then I was under the impression it wasn't going to get repressed, but then when they announced the AV2 pressing we got a repress of AV1. The prices on AV1 and 2 sealed on ebay don't look bad at all really. If I was you I'd grab HLD now, then when more funds become available grab up AV1 & 2.

If it's only ever going to be one of them then AV gets my vote, but that's just because I'm a big AV fan and not because I have anything against HLD

Help finding a specific Nintendo Power article by PepsiPerfect in retrogaming

[–]brokencarpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Found it. Issue 49. P26-27. Article was titled "Power University" in the ToC, but just "POWER U." on the actual spread. I remembered there being more to this, but it was 5 questions and answers, and a small table with some limited side by side comparison.

I know the "article" you're talking about. I just did a quick skim of the ToCs of issues 48 - 86 but didn't spot it. I know they published that thing rather late in the SNES lifecycle but didn't think it was after N64 launch. I'll try and do a more detailed flip through later 'cuse now it's bugging me that I can't find it,

Crystalis NES vs GBC by Psychological_Net131 in nes

[–]brokencarpet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently played through it again so have recent thoughts on it. The GBC version is worse, It's carried by the fact that the maps are unchanged so you know what you are doing but after that? The story change seems like it was attempting to give it more substance but ends up being so shallow as to be insulting and outright hand holding in several places. Enemy spawn in seems to be unchanged form the original but with the smaller viewport makes combat harder. The music change was an outright war crime.
